As a warm weather person, I can honestly say that I’ve been reveling in the idyllic weather summer 2012 offered us. As the heat set in and the sun shimmered on various bodies of water, I loved watching Fashionistas/os play up the flirty dresses and/or sassy shorts — clearly it was all about bearing ones legs. I just knew that the fearless Fashionistas tanning on the beach and pool patios wearing this season’s cutout one pieces and wild bikinis would ward off all chances of sporadic down pours for one more month. Boy was I wrong! Sure it’s easy to get caught in a big wet one between classes, but who says it should cramp our style? If you can’t beat it, style with it!
This Fashionista’s rainy day choice is functional yet a la mode since jewel tones are declared as a go-to in this season’s palette. Her casual turquoise rain coat from Target works for the summer but is versatile enough to carry through into the fall. Not only is it a classic closet staple but its hidden snaps and Peter Pan lapels keep it en vogue. Labels such as Burberry, who claims to have created the garment back in 180, Calvin Klein and every other one in between have drawn and redrawn our impermeable coats over the ages, but few have stood the test of time better then the casual rain coat.
Thanks to its adaptability it can easily be thrown over skinny jeans and a sweater or a dress, and it flatters any shape, size or height. Whether you like it with a belt or without, hood or not, dash over to Target or Mango and grab one of your own.
Better safe than sorry…fashionably of course!
During this time of the year, amidst final exams, the brink of winter and the longest, coldest days of the year, many Fashionistas tend to either hibernate until the worst is over, or stick to basic blacks and neutral tones to get them to and from their destination. And while I find it essential to have a black or navy blue wool coat in your closet at all times, I always find it fun to splash your mid-winter wardrobe with some color!
Take a cue from this Fashionista. Her simple jeans-and-sneakers ensemble is an easy go-to during the last few weeks of classes, when all you care about is finishing that paper and listening to Christmas tunes on Spotify while you make up a Christmas list (and, yes, I already made mine weeks ago). However, she separates herself from the crowd by throwing on a cozy bright purple belted coat. Just because the weather is telling you to bundle up and lie low doesn’t mean you have to shy away from vibrant colors. In fact, many designers chose a brighter palette when designing for their fall 2011 collections. The Row showcased glorious works of fur, but also shook things up with its mustard colored blazers and coat dresses. Victoria Beckham also played with the most vibrant colors by including a lemon yellow gown and candy-apple red coat, channeling a bit of Jackie Kennedy.
Amongst a crowd of black yoga pants and CU sweatshirts, this Fashionista channeled the runway and fended off the winter blues in her candy colored coat. Zara and J.Crew both offer an extensive collection of vibrant coats this winter, so don’t be afraid to add some sunshine to those gloomy study days!
It can be difficult to find variety amongst the swarm of black coats that saturates New York City’s sidewalks. In search of flexibility and fashion, most New Yorkers make a bolt for the black when it comes to purchasing outerwear. However, this week’s Fashionista demonstrates that your go-to coat can be colorful, too.
Introducing a rare shade into the realm of outerwear, this Fashionista’s plum colored peacoat is lacking in black but certainly not beauty. With a crisp cut and classic collar, this coat could easily get lost in the campus shuffle without the help of a vibrant hue. Deep enough to don on a daily basis, this stormy shade of purple permits everyday use without being plagued by the boredom of basic colors. Draped about the neutral tones of a shawl collared cardigan and ruffled blouse, this Fashionista’s outerwear not only complements classic black but also coordinates with basic brown tones, yielding countless options for combination. Simple enough for class and elegant enough for the evening, this Fashionista’s overcoat achieves versatility while remaining utterly unique.
