STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Crop It Like It’s Hot

Every Fashionista/o knows that when it’s hot, it’s a challenge to look cool. While beating the heat and fighting the frizzies, it’s important to have a fuss-free look. One of summer 2012’s biggest trends is putting an end to all of our summer fashion worries. The crop top is one warm-weather essential that is sure to look cool while keeping you cool. Crop tops can be a difficult piece to wear. They’re an unusual length and they show some skin, so it’s necessary to achieve the right look and balance when sporting one. This Fashionista, balances the ultimate laid-back chic look by pairing her amazing, Aztec-print cropped top with a pair of white, fitted shorts, layered bracelets and a unique pair of rainbow accented sandals. It turns out, her sandals are made from recycled rice bags. Looks like this Fashionista is not only fashion savvy, but resourceful as well!

Even though they can be a tricky trend, anyone can pull them off. So what are my tips for pulling of the cropped look? Opt for shorts or skirts with a higher rise when wearing a crop top (this allows a little skin to poke through, so you look fierce without being too risque). Avoid wearing a cropped top with bottoms that have a super low rise fit — it’s too much skin. If you want to rock the look, but you’re concerned about the cropped top showing too much or not having the right body type to pull it off, layer your top with a slim-fit tank underneath. Cropped tops are obviously a fun trend, probably not to be worn in an office setting. So go for a bold print, a bright color or one with a little fringe! Most importantly, be confident. Of course, it’s the most important factor when pulling off any trend. When you feel fabulous, you look fabulous!

If you’re still unsure about how to pull off the cropped top, take a look at some of these spring 2012 looks, straight from the runways.

This summer, crop it like it’s hot!

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Crop It Like It’s Hot

Trends like menswear-inspired blazers and floral prints are typically tailored to women’s style. What I love about this Fashionisto’s look is that both men and women can draw inspiration from it.

Cropped pants are wearable in any weather and seem to be a staple in unisex fashion nowadays. Last spring and summer, cropped white trousers were the perfect addition to the nautical trend and seen for both casual daywear and more formal looks. Then, during fall 2011, colorful pants were a hot trend on the runway and the streets, as Fashionistas everywhere ran out to buy new pants in their favorite color.

After a rare, snowless first few months of winter, the Midwest is finally beginning to see a little snowfall. This Fashionisto carries the cropped look into his winter wardrobe by adding a little flair to the standard skinny blue jean (a warm alternative to airy summer/fall pants). That’s the beauty of this trend: it can work in any season. Not to mention, it is a versatile look that can often be done without buying a single piece.

All you need to achieve the “cropped” style is your favorite pair of pants. Next time you put an outfit together, roll the bottom of your pants a few times so they rest just above the ankles. Don't be afraid to show off a fabulous pair of cozy socks or tights to keep this look warm and stylish for a day on campus.

This Fashionisto kept his look simple with black socks and vintage leather boots. Add a warm pair of patterned wool socks and leather booties of your own when sporting your DIY cropped pants this winter.
