STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Denim On Denim

“Fashion is quick. One year is like a dog year,” the young and talented supermodel Karlie Kloss explained to Vogue UK in their May 2012 issue. In the ever-changing fashion world, one thing is for certain: denim is never going out of style. Whether it’s denim jeans or a chambray shirt, denim is everywhere – the definition of a wardrobe staple. There is a difference between a fad and fashion, fads fades and fashion doesn’t. The only thing fading about denim is the faded hues.

While it’s common to see denim on any campus, the denim worn is usually in the form of jeans. This Fashionista was a breathe of fresh air in a double-denim look fit for a beachside barbeque or music festival. Her chambray button-up and denim jeans contrasted unbelievably well together and she looked super comfortable.

Denim on denim has been a trend for a while now, after circulating back to the scene in spring 2010 shows. Arguably the most famous of double-denim looks was Justin Timberlake and Britney Spears’ appearance at the VMAs, where they tried to make their looks red carpet worthy. We want to stray far from that, Fashionistas.

When attempting a denim-on-denim look you first have to get the shading correct. Ideally, the two garments will be of different colors and textures, as seen here, making it easier to distinguish from the two. Also, branch out and consider incorporating denim accessories into your wardrobe, like a versatile denim tote or denim flats.

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Denim on Denim

For a classic look that never goes out of style, try pairing a light colored chambray long sleeve button down shirt with a skinny pair of dark jeans that are perfectly tailored.  This Fashionista spotted on Landis Green outside of Florida State’s library gives a wonderful example of how to make this timeless look your own. A silky red vintage scarf, recently purchased from ebay, was twisted into an adorable head wrap that also kept her somewhat warm and looked totally unique.  Her cat eye shaped sunglasses from Urban Outfitters, reminiscent of Alexander Wang’s pair with Linda Farrow from last spring, were lined with tiny crystals and introduced some trendiness for such a plain-Jane outfit.  She wore all gold jewelry; a thick chain necklace with a large cross charm, a textured cuff, and a simple watch.  Her shoes are flat brown basketweave skimmers and are also from Urban Outfitters.  For the ideal chambray button down shirt I recommend Madewell who has a selection of a few different washes with a great boyfriend fit.  To dress this outfit up a bit for a chill night out, I suggest pairing with an eclectic pair of heeled boots like these from Nastygal, a thin cheetah print belt to break up the denim, and a discrete messenger bag like this one from Rebecca Minkoff.

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Denim-on-Denim

Ah, denim — the fabric that never seems to get old or go out of style, and the fabric that has been made into nearly every item of clothing, accessory and anything else you could possibly think of… ever. Denim can be impossibly chic, both dressed up and down. Recently, the fashion world has been more experimental and welcoming to denim, incorporating it into more than just a pant, and putting out trends like colored denim and denim-on-denim.

This week’s Fashionista took a cue from Pippa Middleton and paired two lighter denims together for a look that is chic and summery. White jeans are especially great for summer, since white denim and summer go together like popsicles and hot days. A cropped version of white denim, like these options from Paige or MiH, is great because it will leave you a little cooler in the daytime, but standard white jeans, either skinny or with a slight flare, are great also.

Now denim on denim can land you on the best dressed, or the worst dressed list (Britney and Justin, anyone?), so be careful. This Fashionista paired her white denim pants with a light blue denim shirt, giving her look an all-around lightness, but not monochromatic-ness. When pairing denim with denim, always choose two different shades. Pairing white on white denim, or light blue with light blue, etc. can result in a look that is simply way too nineties. Pairing white with blue or dark-blue with light blue will help your denim on denim look just right, and you will avoid looking like a blueberry. Unless, of course, that is what you’re going for (although I don’t generally advise it).

When doing a denim on denim look, please make sure not to also carry a denim bag, wear denim shoes, and sport a denim headband. Denim clothing, when together, is great. A denim accessory, with denim clothing, is not as great. Take a cue from this Fashionista and pair your denims with a bag in a neutral color. Her light brown flat sandals, perfect for summer, are a great choice, but you can also dress it up a little with some chunky summery platforms. Her big sunglasses, also in a brown, gold rings, and orange bracelets are the perfect, simple accessories to add a little color and glitz to the outfit. The final accessory is a big water bottle — essential for the summer. Drink up!

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Denim on Denim

Lets face it, once winter comes around we layer our clothes pretty much everyday. That doesn’t mean it needs to be boring or cliche. Like I’ve written in the past, layering creates so many more combinations and ways to make an absolutely trendsetting outfit. You can always use layer to play with proportion. I love to see people pushing the boundaries. An oversized cardigan hanging out from under a leather jacket is just enough to mix up the proportions. Layering also is fun because you can play with the shape.

I still enjoy a skinny bottom with a heavily layered or even a bold shoulder top. But my favourite way to dress with layers is to play up the texture. Many of us have already professed our love for velvet . Denim is a bit less of a risk for those who want to try the texture trend a bit more subtly. This fashionista layered two of the same textures in different colors to stand out from the layered crowd. The denim on denim look is diffidently hot right now. It’s a bit western, a bit hipster, and totally easy to pull off. She added a snood that has the complete opposite texture as denim on top of the look. It is full and fluffy. The great neon green color adds a punch to the outfit and breaks up the blues.

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Denim on Denim

Summer has gone by so fast  which means Fall is approaching. Pretty soon we will all be packing up our essentials and head back into the classroom. There are so many styles to choose from this upcoming fall season everyone is guaranteed to look their best. One of my favorites has to be the denim shirt. Although the denim shirt appeared at the beginning of the summer I predict it will still be a staple among the cooler months. I was inspired by the way this fashionista's styled her denim shirt. she choose a floral tank top tucked into a white pair of skinny jeans. This denim on denim look is great because its not over done and instead works well together. With some minor adgustments this look can work well for both seasons by changing different pieces. For instance while sandals are great for summer its best to retire them for fall and switch with a pair of vintage boots or oxford inspired shoes. Here are a few different ways this look can be changed to make it your own.

Hint: Asos.com is a good source for different styles. I loved this shirt and its not to expensive. Its a little bit lighter than most versions I'v seen. Topshop is of course an essential part of any anyones life. This style from Top Shop is another option to try as well. For a similar shirt like the one this fashionista is wearing try a floral top such as this one from American Eagle that can be easily tucked in to jeans. Dont like denim on denim? try pairing a dress and boots with your look.
