STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Dressing In Denim

The famous designer Yves Saint Laurent once said, “I wish I had invented blue jeans. They have expression, modesty, sex appeal, simplicity — all I hope for in my clothes.”

Denim is an American staple that many Fashionistas and Fashionistos can’t get enough of this season. Denim on denim is a trend that has been all over runways like Chloé and D&G and serves as the perfect update to the American classic. Denim is a fabric that is so versatile and can be incorporated in a wardrobe in many different ways. Mixing and matching different tones of denim may seem intimidating but when mastered, it looks fresh, easy and cool.

I spotted this Fashionisto on campus and he instantly caught my attention because of his keen sense of style and eye for color. His denim button-down is right on trend and serves as a great basic to wear with a colorful pair of jeans. The interesting and vibrant hue of his denim pants brightened up a gray winter day. Even his skinny belt and navy blue loafers look impeccable matched with his button-down. This Fashionisto was able to incorporate the trend in an outfit that is not too overwhelming with blue denim, making it more wearable than some runway looks.

A basic denim button-down like this Fashionisto’s reminds me of cool ‘90s grunge and is the perfect way to dip your feet into the denim trend. A simple shirt like one from Madewell could be paired with any thing from black leggings, to a full shirt or even a pair of dark skinnies. This cool button-down from ASOS has tons of different shades of denim and would complement a pair of colored jeans. Many timid Fashionistas and Fashionistos may be wary to mix denim and denim together in one outfit, but editors and designers are easing this anxiety by telling us to give it a try and experiment with different shades.
