STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Embellish Fetish

During this winter season, it is obvious that is has been a little difficult to find those eye catching outfits since everyone is so bundled up in their scarves, hats, and puffy coats, not allowing us to see what they are sporting underneath. Luckily, I was able to find this stylish Columbia student on campus that isn't afraid to wear what she feels…no matter what the weather! I was so pleased to see this beautiful ensemble put together on her, with the flowy skirt, socks, chunky shoes, vintage mailbag, and the embellished sweater. Neutral colors flew right off the runways this fall and winter season onto garments like coats, shoes, sweaters, and pants. Here, we see this Fashionista doing all the right things: neutral based colors put together to create a simplistic, pretty look!

Embellishments have been seen almost every season on the runways. Adding extra pieces, whether it be gems, sequins, or beads, makes the garment have that finishing touch and more. With this sweater she is wearing, it was a vintage find she grabbed while thrifting. The embellishment was what caught her eye of course, with such great detail and accuracy with the beads and threading along the neckline and down, looping under the arms giving it that girly feel, even with the comfort of a sweater.

Some embellished garments can be quite pricey, depending on the work and quality on the piece. We see these details a lot on sheer fabrics, chiffon, and accessories. If you can get yourself to the nearest fabric or jewelry store, you'll be able to create your own. Back in the day, we would always have our mothers add on fabrics to our torn jeans. Now we can go the next step with adding embellishments! I like to think of it as if I were approaching my room. I am constantly analyzing my room and how I can redecorate it–so why not redecorate our closet? You don't have to be a professional designer or master sewer to enhance your wardrobe. Thankfully we have books and the Internet that can teach us everything we need to know. So go out there and find some pretty embellished pieces to sport around your campus, or get creative and have some fun by making your own! You'll be quite the embellished Fashionista.
