STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Endless Summer

Well, here we are. The reality has set in: summer is over. Gone are the days of staying in your swimsuit until dusk, walking around barefoot without needing a reason and consuming one whole watermelon per week all by yourself (I like watermelon, okay?). The drudgery of days filled with classes and work combined with the tragic loss of beach-filled weekends has me in a borderline state of depression. Too dramatic?

When I spotted this Fashionisto on campus, I realized there could be a solution. Instead of just quitting summer cold turkey, why not slowly wean out of it? Even though we are saftely entering the beginning of September, this Fashonisto's linen shirt didn't feel out of place at all. In fact, it serves as the perfect transition piece. Paired with the basic chino short that will never be wrong and a pair of Vans, this Fashionisto gives off a relaxed, “I know how to dress myself” feeling. For all of you boys out there, this feeling should be what you are going for every time you get dressed in the morning. Think about it: this outfit could have gone devastatingly wrong. Wear that shirt with a pair of cargo shorts and flipflops and suddenly you've got yourself a dad who still addresses all your friends by “dude”.

So let's all take notes from this Fashionisto and keep some of our favorite summer pieces alive for at least a few more weeks. Just because summer is over doesn't mean we need to pack up our favorite sundresses and linen shirts and enter a state of mourning. Pairing the dress with a sweater and the shirt with the right pair of shoes will help create a smooth transition into fall. And if all else fails, just drink as many pumpkin spice lattes as possible and dream of Christmas daily; that usually works, too.

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Endless Summer

So, how do you prepare yourself for when the summertime strikes back? Well, the most important thing to remember is that the key to warm weather style is effortlessness. When the temperature hits a balmy 80 degrees smack dab in the middle of fall, it is time to think more about skirts and dresses than knit sweaters and scarves, at least for the time being. With summer looks priced lower everywhere you look, it is the perfect time to stock up on all of your fall heat wave essentials.

If you are anything like me, you have been more than a little skeptical about donning summer duds this late in October. Despite what the weather application on my phone says, it has not been easy wrapping my head around not needing to grab an extra sweater on my way out the door. But why not take advantage of the lovely weather? After all, taking in some Vitamin D is the perfect excuse for prolonging your procrastination on that midterm paper.

This week, take a tip from this Fashionista and give summer a second chance. For the ultimate in spring/summer style, break out the floral print and embrace the last hurrah of sunshine before the seasonal weather catches up with us.

If you are looking for a little more color in your life, I say go for it! This may be your last chance to get your Technicolor fix before the clouds move in over Berkeley (and that includes the usual proverbial black cloud of finals). Opt for a flirty floral dress to maximize the summer fun. Pair with your favorite glam sandals and the perfect cross-body bag. As you head over to Memorial Glade looking stylish to take in some rays, don’t forget to sync your iPod with your favorite summer playlist, and be sure to listen to “California Gurls” on repeat.
