STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Flirty Girl Meets Vintage Grunge

Alright, I confess: I power walked home after I snapped this shot, I was so excited to write about it! Silly it may have been, but this Fashionista's ensemble reminded me (once again) why I love fashion. Every single piece in this vintage look added something special to the outfit in its entirety. From her two-toned hair to her worn-out black flats to the simple skirt that balances it all out, today's Fashionista really sets herself apart from the rest of Iowa City's crowd.

First seen on the runway at Alexander Wang's fall 2008 RTW collection, ripped tights have been an underlying trend many of us have been itching to try. The perfect way today's Fashionista contrasts her grungy tights with her floral blouse makes me regret tossing all of those tights that had pulls in them. Looks like "ruined" tights may not be so ruined after all! Slashed tights can add an edge to any outfit in a modern way. You can play with this idea by ripping some patterned tights as well.

What brought the entire look together was this Fashionista's denim jacket. We already know that denim-on-denim is a hot trend for this spring, but you can put a spin on this 90s trend by simply bringing back the denim jacket. While vintage-inspired jackets are available at brands like Free People, check out local secondhand shops to snag an authentic one. Buttons and patches are an easy was to add old-school flavor to any piece. The floral blouse, an ever-popular spring item, always contributes a girly feel to the overall look.

A swipe of red lipstick along this Fashionista's lips could have added some glam to this eighties-grunge look, but she chose to keep the look more casual while strutting to class.

  1. I’m truly enjoying the design and layout of your site. It’s a very easy on the eyes which makes it much more enjoyable for me to come here and visit more often. Did you hire out a designer to create your theme? Exceptional work!
