STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Get Graphic

Every Fashionista should have arsenal in her closet to combat those days when getting dressed feels like more of a chore than an exciting style adventure. When exhaustion overcomes your body and sleeping in for 10 more minutes is more appealing than choosing a killer outfit, that’s when any Fashionista needs a go-to item to make it through the challenging fashion days—such as the ever popular graphic T-shirt.

This Fashionista was up and at ‘em wearing a casual yet edgy look put together with simple pieces anyone can certainly throw on in time for an early class. The show-stopper of this outfit is her graphic T-shirt straight from China. It’s simple and eye-catching, which makes graphic tops a prime pick when it comes to dressing quickly and fashionably. She toned down the T-shirt and added small fairs of grunge with black shorts, a denim jacket, a textured cross-body bag and scuffed ankle boots. The entire look is effortless but compelling. The graphic shirt definitely pulled it all together.

To get a look like this Fashionista’s, opt for a graphic T-shirt that’s to your liking. Try this feather printed tank top paired with skinny jeans, a berry blazer and loafers for a more classic appeal or this long sleeved skull top to feed off this Fashionista’s edgy energy. Want to take graphic a step further? Go for tops that have adorned appliqués such as the new fall trend of animal influences as noted by WhoWhatWear. Choose this tiger pullover sweater and pair it with high-waist pants and ballet flats. For a more subdued animal influence, go for a smaller patterned item, such as this fox printed chiffon scarf.

However you decide to combat those morning fashion woes, make sure a graphic is right up your sleeve.

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Get Graphic

As I walked to class, I spotted the face of a Fashionista. This face, knitted coyly onto my fellow Barnard student’s sweater, instantly commanded my attention. The Lucky Brand cardigan, purchased while this sartorialist was still in high school, is a unique and underestimated garment. Sweaters are usually shafted into the basics category, and as the winter approaches and layers pile, Fashionistas become more and more homogenous. While outer garments are usually basic dark hues of black, blue and brown, this Fashionista is unafraid to dance with the knitting devil.

Graphic sweaters, popularized by several designers but mastered by Betsey Johnson, are playful and loud, yet tasteful. The lasting power of a graphic sweater compared to that of a graphic T-shirt is much greater; this Fashionista purchased her sweater more than five years ago! I find that while the graphic T-shirts quickly lose their shine, sweaters remain aesthetically pleasing.

This Fashionista incorporates similar colors in her diversely patterned outfit: her Gap button-down that peaks from beneath her cardigan is made of reds and blues that accentuate the design on her sweater. Likewise, her Marc by Marc Jacobs skirt is made of a similar palette: the blue and pink are variations on the other patterns and designs in her ensemble. The assemblage of plaid, bows and graphics are masterfully paired to complement one another.

By pairing more masculine oxford shoes with her girly outfit, this Fashionista hardens her look. The green leather shoes are the perfect accent to her look: they downplay her sweater’s demure graphic and balance the hard and soft edges of her look. However intimidating, don’t shy from graphics and mixed media. The key to a successful outfit is not always homogeneity: the success of this Fashionista’s look is largely a product of her eclectic taste.

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Get Graphic

I am a modest dresser, readers. You will never see me bare my midriff, inch up my mini-skirt, buy my pants a size smaller for tightness, or shock anyone with the lowness of my neckline. I just don’t have it in me. Thankfully, fashion fits my sensibilities right now with its fondness for high necklines and maxi skirts, but on days when I’m not feeling those trends, it’s easy to cross the line over to boring. Just how many jean, T-shirt, and cardigan combinations are possible? My trick to spicing things up while still dressing moderately is simple: get graphic.

Clearly, this Fashionista agrees. When I spotted her strutting down the street in her killer geometric and graphic leggings, I couldn’t contain my excitement. Usually a pattern or cool graphic detail is seen on tights underneath a dress or on a T-shirt, but the idea of the striking coolness of a geometric element seen on her pants caught me off guard just enough to applaud her ensemble completely.

Emulate this Fashionista’s look when you want to remain covered up but don’t want to disappear into the background. Find a pair of pants or leggings that contain a cool geometric pattern; neutral color palettes keep them from getting too crazy. Pair them with a simple and classic black blazer with an oversized tank top underneath to keep the look sophisticated and modern. Finish everything off with minimal accessories. Lace-up combat boots or wedges plus one cool necklace make the ensemble complete.
