STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Girl Meets Boy

Menswear-inspired fashion has been a steady presence on the runways for the past few seasons. Designers have become more and more innovative, bringing us lots of unique ways to rock menswear-inspired pieces. This season Jason Wu created a tailored tuxedo, Ralph Lauren channeled a more androgynous look, and Isabel Marant put together a perfect boyfriend look with comfy, oversized shirts and jackets. Whether you prefer edgy, classic, feminine or something in between, there are tons of different ways to incoorperate menswear-inspired pieces into your wardrobe.

For those who love the menswear-inspired fashions but prefer a more feminine look, take note of this week’s Fashionista. This Fashionista nailed the look by creating the perfect combination of menswear with a feminine twist. Pairing a sheer black blouse with classic skinny jeans, she allowed the animal print necktie of her blouse to hang loose, giving her look a little less structure and a more casual vibe. Paired with black smoking shoes from Target, she created a simple, feminine and fashion-forward outfit that drew my attention immediately.

As the Fashionista demonstrates, putting a feminine twist on menswear-inspired fashion is all about the details. The sheer material of the blouse with animal print detailing and a draped sillhouette lent a feminine and girly vibe to the top. Soft, sheer materials and color are a great way to add ladylike touches to menswear-inspired pieces. This chiffon blouse from Urban Outfitters comes in great colors and would look fantastic with simple, dark wash jeans for a classic and casual look. For an edgier look, pair the top with leather leggings and lace-up booties for a menswear-inspired look that is both girly and funky. This Fashionista's simple black smoking shoes are so classic and versatile, but if you're looking for another way to add some feminine flair, try a pair of these loafers in a soft print. Or try a pair of shimmery oxfords, which would look great paired with skinny jeans and the Urban Outfitters blouse. When going for a menswear-inspired look it's usually best to let the pieces stand on their own and not try to add feminine touches with lots of jewelery. Instead, stick with one great piece, like an oversized watch.
