STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Harem Pants

Harem pants are perfect for anyone that is slim on top because they give great volume to the lower half of the body. In combination with a cinched waist, the harem pant's skinny ankle makes anyone look like they have legs for days. Additionally, harem pants tend to be so unique that going crazy with the rest of your outfit is not necessary. To keep the look most flattering, it’s important to counter balance the loose-fit of the pants with a tight top.

Since the harem pant trend is such a bold move and allocates a bountiful amount of volume to any outfit, it gives Fashionistas the opportunity to really play with accessories. In particular, belts and chunky necklaces are a great way to keep the trend classic and fun looking. Belts, in particular, are a great way to cinch the waist while still adding an element of creativity.

For the ultimately flattering look, today’s Fashionista pairs her gray high-waist harems with a simple white top and perfectly tailored blazer. Additionally, she perfects the look with a beaded chunky necklace and a practical messenger satchel.

A rule that all trendsetters sporting the harem pant look must follow is to keep the waist cinched. On that same note, the higher the heel, the more petite a Fashionista will appear. This Fashionista keeps her look neutral with a slate gray color. Some designers that play with ivories and neutrals include Chloe, Paul Smith and Jaeger London. If you’re a daring trendsetter, check out Antik Batik’s harem pants that come in an assortment of jewel-tone colors. To really vamp up your harem pants, opt to sport a printed pair just in time for spring!

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Hey Harem

My mom brought me back a pair of printed harem pants from Argentina this past year, claiming that they were all the trend there and such. When she pulled them out of her luggage, I looked at her like she was crazy since all I could see was MC Hammer in them. Questioning where my self-proclaimed fashion sense came from, I took the pants and vowed never to wear them. Well that vow didn't last long as the pants started growing on me, and I have, in fact, worn them (multiple times). You know the saying, "Moms are always right"? Well, seeing as how the entire fashion world is wearing harem pants, I guess they are!

Here's a fellow Fashionista wearing a pair of these wondrous bottoms. I love how she's matched them with a tube top and stylish booties. Check out these black ones from Urban or, for a lighter, more summery feel, these from FreePeople (they make cute a pair in army green too).

Hint: Harem pants are most flattering when the waist is defined, so try wearing a tucked in top and a waist belt. As for shoes, anything works: heels, booties, flats, or flip flops.

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Harem pants

I am always up for trying new things and while I haven always been a fan of harem pants my feelings toward them have changed. Harem pants orginated in the 80's and garned attention when Mc Hammer wore them in his "Cant Touch This" music video which means he basically revolutionized this style. Rihanna is another startlet who is also giving this look a try. Just like the crop top, harem pants are another 80's style that are gracing the pages of magazines, runways, and now they can be seen on the streets of New York City. Today's Fashionista is sporting a slightly different variation that tapers at the ankle almost like capris. She is also wearing a tye dyed blueish brown top tucked in with a belt which makes this look perfect for a first day back to college or just lounging around.

Hint : There are a lot of ways to make this look your own with a twist. A store I love to order from is Asos.com. Both of these are from their online store and are almost perfect. Want a more basic color? Try a pair from Rachel Roy and they are a steal for $60.00! To make your look polished try a pair of wedges, sandals, or oxford shoes.
