STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Head West

Upon returning from winter break (in sunny southern California, might I add), I was braced for cloudy skies, heaps of snow and chilling winds here in the 60637. What greeted me instead was unseasonably mild weather.  While temperatures in the mid-40s hardly compare to the climate I left back home, they are definitely a reason for celebration, and what better way to celebrate than with extra-bold fashion choices? This week’s pictured Fashionista took a cue from the style native to the wild west and sported a pair of traditional cowboy boots.

She may not be racing across the desert on horseback or starring opposite John Wayne in a western film, but this Fashionista chose a pair of leather cowboy boots that are still perfect for a day of adventure in Hyde Park. The detailing on the shaft keeps their look particularly authentic. Gray jeans are a modern twist on traditional blue denim, a favorite of those who gallivanted across the old West.  Adding a preppy air to the look is a striped top and neutral cardigan. Finally, she tops the outfit off with a delicate gold chain necklace, a long strand of pearls, and a chunky infinity scarf — not to mention a cup of coffee, the University of Chicago student’s go-to accessory.

No matter how you classify your personal style, cowboy boots put a free-spirited spin on any outfit, as this featured Fashionista fabulously demonstrates. Wear them with a blazer, black skinny jeans and minimalist gold jewelry for a city-meets-country look, or go the Taylor Swift route — albeit suited for winter — by sporting them with a knit sweater dress and leggings. If you want to shake things up in an even bigger way, go for western-style boots with studded accents or a chic pair in an unusual hue with a shorter shaft and small heel.

Metropolitan Chicago is not exactly a picture of the rough and tumble old west, but we all know that a college campus is nonetheless filled with the wild and unexpected. In a pair of genuine cowboy boots, you can fashionably face the day and be ready for whatever comes your way. And who knows?  You just might find that rodeo star with whom you’ll ride off into the sunset.

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Head West

While last week's Fashionista rocked a southwestern Native American-inspired look, this week's trend isn't far off the map. In fact, it's on the very same map: Midwestern style. Think The Wizard of Oz and Little House On The Praire taken to a whole new whimsical level.

If you're already feeling a little concerned about this trend, don't fret. As this week's Fashionista shows us, it can be done subtly in a way that still looks modern and cute. Her lace skirt and rich, mahogany leather boots propel this Midwestern trend, but her black and white striped T-shirt keep this look modern and chic. Her earthy, leather bag and dainty silver watch add a final touch of Midwestern flair.

While the idea of Midwestern style may seem a little too kitsch for some, it can easily be done in a way that doesn't scream, “I've a feeling we're not in Kansas anymore.” Since styles from the '70s are super on-trend at the moment, cute peasant blouses, like this one from Free People, are all over the place. Another very modern way to evoke Midwestern chic is with a tweed blazer, like this one from J.Crew. The wider shoulders and nipped waist bring about imaches of the Victorian era Midwestern silhouette (think of a cuter version of Miss Gulch from The Wizard of Oz), while still being a contemporary item. And leather ankle boots, which are all the rage this fall, can also add a dose of Great Plains to any look; just check out this cute, heeled pair from ASOS.

If your style is a little more daring, when dressing Midwestern take a cue from Rodarte's fall 2011 collection, which was inspired by a trip to Kansas and Nebraska. Their sweeping hemlines and dreamy layers are perfect for the boldest Fashionistas. Try a long dress with a higher neckline, like this sweet gown from Modcloth, with more modern accessories. If that's still not enough for you, add this great Free People tunic for a look that is full of nostalgic, Midwestern layers.

Just because the trend may be wholesome and sweet in essence doesn't mean you have to be. A great way to add some edge to a Midwestern look is with metal accessories. Model Erin Wasson collaborated with Low Luv on a jewelry line that is anything but sweet. Try one of their arrowhead leather cuffs or thunderbird necklaces to add some serious grit to this dreamy trend.
