In a city typically defined by neon colors and bodycon dresses, it was absolutely refreshing to stumble upon such natural beauty in Miami.
Although the earthy simplicity of her on-trend floral shirtdress was what drew me to this Fashionista, it was her artful selection of accessories that made me decide I couldn’t let her get away without snapping a few photos. The way the chunky geometry of her tribal necklace plays off the feminine, ruffled details of the dress takes this look from everyday casual to boho chic, and the tortoise-print sunglasses maintain an aura of sophistication. The balance of her straw fedora and edgy haircut keeps her modern, playful and trendy.
You may be familiar with this statement, or one like it: “I have great taste, but I can’t afford to show it.” You may even have thought this yourself, or, God forbid, let those ridiculous words fall carelessly from your lips. As self-appointed “Queen of the Sale Rack,” it pains me to admit that, yes, it would be convenient to have unlimited cash to spring for luxurious materials, impeccable craftsmanship and unmatched structure that only high-end designer labels can achieve — but designer labels do not a Fashionista make.
As important as a healthy bank account seems to be in the world of fashion, an artist’s eye for combination is infinitely more vital. Playing with texture, pattern, and color with an omnipresent tasteful attention to detail is what transforms every outfit into an ensemble — and can make almost anything seem expensive.
Don’t concern yourself with making the pieces of your outfit match, rather pay attention to how they complement each other. Approach your wardrobe with a renewed appreciation for the intricacies that make your pieces so unique, and focus on how you can play them up to showcase them in their best light, instead of trying to make them blend.
Change your mindset, hone in on the details, and you’ll never fade into the background.
