STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Layer it On

New York Fashion Week has arrived, which means it is the time for all of us fashion lovers to lust over what is in store for spring. On the runways, versions of colorful prints are a hit as well as a return to minimalistic and simple dressing. Many designers are displaying a play on texture for spring 2011 by layering sheer and knit fabrics. Such collections thus far include those by Rag & Bone, Tommy Hilfiger and Malandrino.

Although the weather here is starting to cool, you can still achieve an easy-going layered look for class. I adored this Fashionista’s ensemble because she looked put-together in a carefree and simple way. She layered an ash-gray sweater over a printed top and accessorized with a beaded necklace. A monochromatic sweater is enhanced when worn over a bold printed top. Overall, layering items can make it possible to wear pieces from spring into fall – allowing some clothing to transition from season to season.

Hint: When layering tops, it is best to make sure that the shape of the necklines match up. However for more visual interest, you can try layering a sweater over a shirt with a collar such as this fun top. Bringing the runway look to reality is simple by layering your knits this fall.

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Layer It On

It is August in Athens and that means that students are beginning to pile into apartment complexes, dorms, and houses. Soon enough classes will be starting and students will be running all over campus. The summer is winding down, but the temperatures are still burning on. So what are you to do when it’s 100 degrees outside and 60 degrees inside your new classrooms? My answer: layer it up! Layering is a super easy option with such a big temperature change. You can also carry the individual pieces into the fall!

This Fashionista is battling both the morning heat and a case of the Mondays with her high-waisted skirt, tank top, and coffee. The grey color of her tank top picks up the gray flecks in her blue animal print skirt. Her silver jewelry also complements the grey in her tank top and skirt. This Fashionista also matches her blue tote to the blue in her skirt. Her gladiator sandals are the perfect touch of edge to the soft feel of the skirt and shirt.

Hint: Invest in solid color cardigans. They can be thrown over almost any outfit and they will keep you warm in your cool classes. When cool temperatures roll around, you can wear them belted with jeans. J. Crew always has great cardigan colors and they will last you for years!
