STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Learn to Accessorize

This Fashionista was spotted not only because of her bright red coat, but because of her awesome accessories. If you look at the core of the outfit, it consists of a plain white T-shirt and black high waisted shorts. She turns up the volume with her many accessories that all blend together to create a fluid, fashionable outfit.

Hair accessories. Headbands are probably one of the easiest routes to take if you are looking to spice up things in your outfit. This Fashionista takes the idea to the extreme with her Lady Gaga-like bow. You can do something a little more low-key, like a small flower or feather on your band. Any of these Forever 21 pieces will do the trick.

Scarves. I like how this Fashionista sticks to her black and white theme with her scarf, but it still has a touch of color. You can achieve the same look with these scarves from Macy’s. You can also find a lot of cute scarves at vintage stores, I know I got a lot of interesting ones from my grandma! When it gets colder you can trade in your silk scarves for something thicker, like wool. That way they will look cute with your winter coat and with your outfit underneath.

Tights. As I talked about last week, textured tights are all the rage this season. She keeps it interesting with these radio wave striped tights. Target has multi color tights right now on sale for only five dollars each.

Flats. I absolutely love this oxford style of shoe right now. She once again stays black and white with her two-toned pair, but they come in plain colors as well. I’ve also seen a lot of girls wearing the heeled version too. They are cute, casual and perfect for the fall season. Try these ones from Urban Outfitters on for size, they also many other pairs in different colors!

All in all, this Fashionista has accessories nailed down in her monochromatic ensemble. Each one brings a new dimension to the outfit, but still they tie together in the end. The pop of color with her fall jacket is cherry on top of this adorable look.

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Learn to Accessorize

While most schools have been hitting the books for weeks now, we here at the UO are just getting back in the swing of things. Conveniently, the sun has decided to stick around a little longer (and fool all the out-of-state freshmen to think that Oregon "really doesn't rain that much"). The campus is flooded with excited Fashionistas navigating from class to class, and it was actually difficult to choose just one look. As you may already know, I love to emphasize the power of accessories. They can transform an outfit to convey any look or personality. This Fashionista used her accessories with creativity. For a take on western style, she took a simple pair of white shorts and plaid shirt and accessorized like crazy. A statement belt, aviators, Michael Kors white watch, and adorable book bag (which I am currently on the hunt for) all played a part in the look as a whole.

Hint: Substitute a pair of dark skinny jeans as the weather begins to cool down like these from J Brand. Look here for a similar plaid button-up in red and here for a wild west, vintage-inspired waist belt. You can always add a couple of simple gold bangles and a ring or two. Get creative.
