STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Leather Love

When I was growing up, the only people I ever saw wearing large amounts of leather were bikers riding along on their motorcycles. Because of this stereotype I always tended to shy away from leather clothing, thinking that I would be much more hardcore than my outfit allowed. Fortunately, I have since modified my thought process and have begun to realize what a fabulous asset leather can be to your outfit. Whether you’re wearing a simple leather jacket or a full leather dress, leather is certainly on the comeback. It can be a great accessory to your outfit (i.e.boots and belts) or it can define your outfit, like it does this Fashionista’s.

Though this Fashionista’s outfit is quite simple, she adds a lot of accents to make it more exciting. She is wearing over the knee boots, which have become increasingly popular this winter. She is also sporting an infinity scarf, which is another must-have in a Fashionista’s closet (both for warmth and for looks). Lastly, and most importantly, she’s wearing a brown leather jacket that pulls the whole outfit together.

Not only is leather fashionable and attractive, it is actually incredibly warm because of its lack of pores. If you want to go all out on a leather jacket, this one from Joie would be a great investment. On the other hand, if you like the look but would prefer to not go for real leather this H&M jacket is a great alternative.

Often times, I also feel that I have way too many coats, jackets and vests. If you feel the same way, you could always go for a different leather article of clothing. There are pants, dresses, shorts, skirts and even more quiet accessories like these earrings or this bow for your hair. No matter what the occasion, you can always add a little leather to your look without over doing it. Now that there are so many options of what leather you can wear, there’s no reason for any Fashionista to not have some in her wardrobe!

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Leather Love

Fashionistas are lucky in the sense that we can take so many trends that have been associated with men for years and make them work for us. We can take pieces such as blazers, leather jackets and combat boots and put a feminine touch on them. Due to the explosive demand for leather jackets by females, designers have started making them sleeker and sexier, which allows Fashionistas to wear them with just about any outfit.

A leather jacket is a great piece that every Fashionista should have. If you are a believer in investing big money in classic pieces that you expect to last a lifetime, the leather jacket is an excellent investment. I love the asymmetrical closure of this Marc Jacobs jacket. Leather jackets can create so many styles — a tough look when paired with skinny jeans, an edgy appearance when paired with a graphic top and combat boots, or a rough edge with a more feminine look when worn over a floral summer dress. You can also glam up your work attire a bit by wearing a leather blazer and accessorizing it with chain necklaces.

This Fashionista kept it simple, contrasting her leather jacket with a white scarf underneath and wearing regular jeans to let the jacket be the star of her outfit. Her jacket is definitely more masculine, paying homage to the original style of the trend.

Androgyny and leather are two of the main trends for fall 2011/winter 2012 fashion lines, so buying a leather jacket is a perfect combination of the trends. I stumbled upon an amazing selection at Target the other day, full of variation with colors and styles. I love the extra touches, like with this soft collar.

Not just pieces that keep you warm in the winter, leather jackets can be spotted on Fashionistas year-round. This winter season I am definitely counting on my jacket to keep me warm during the cold Davis nights.
