Originally manufactured as an alternative piece of clothing for British and French soldiers in the First World War, the trench coat has made many strides into everyday fashion- especially among college students on campus. I’ll be the first to admit that a rainy day is rare in Tempe, it’s obvious though that these coats are so much more than utilitarian. There’s something glamorous about trench coats, they are very “femme fatale.” Alluring and dramatic- it’s an item of seduction.
This Fashionista is wearing a black trench coat with tan stitching. She’s layered it over a knee length circle skirt, black tights, and shiny pointed heels. Her red bag and purple sunglasses add the perfect amount of color to the ensemble. Even though her outfit does feature a lot of black, she does it right. The fact that her coat is a little off-black creates a sense of depth and prevents the outfit from looking too heavy at the same time.
Trench coats come in all shapes and colors. I particularly love this classic trench coat from Forever 21. The taupe color is an easy match to everything in your wardrobe. For a coat that is a bit more striking, try this hooded wool trench coat from Nasty Gal is to-die-for! The charcoal color is beautiful and the drape-y effect is interesting and contemporary. Lastly, don’t forget a pair of tights to complete your look! A pair of sheer or textured tights is the perfect way to complete a trench coat. Try these back seam pantyhose from American Apparel for an effortless feminine twist.
