Thanks to Coco Chanel the little black dress has become a ‘rule of fashion’ that every woman should have one in her closet. But on the other side of the color spectrum, there is the little white dress. Just like how a black dress is elegant in its simplicity, the perfect white dress is appropriate for any occasion. This week’s Fashionista puts the little black dress to shame. The crochet detail on the neck of the dress acts as an accessory and adds just the right touch to the outfit. That is why I am declaring the little white dress the statement piece of the summer!
What I love most about this outfit is how she puts two very different styles together and somehow makes it work. The denim cutoff vest gives the dress an unexpected edge and dresses it down. The combination is genius since most people dress casually to class during the summer session. So it comes as no surprise that many students around campus look like they just rolled out of bed and threw on some sweats. That’s why I applaud this Fashionista for setting the bar for the rest.
While skimming the headlines of fashion sites I came across Lucky Magazine’s “50 White Dresses Under $50” that offered fashionable and affordable options perfect for this week’s style advice. Among some of the choices was a 1950’s inspired summer dress from ASOS with a sweetheart neckline cut and double shoulder traps that cross in the back. Similar to this but sexier is Guess’s Gia Sleeveless Pieced Lace Dress that goes to show that modesty is not in their dictionary when it comes to style. But if you’re looking for a bit of coverage, Francesca’s delivers the ultimate date dress called Laced in Love Dress. With all these options laid out on the table, there’s no reason not to add one to your closet. Happy shopping!
One thing all fashion enthusiasts know for sure is that you can never go wrong with a little black dress. The LBD is a classy look that never goes out of style. With summer temperatures at an all time high, black is anything but practical. This week’s Fashionista showcases the same timeless trend with her little white dress.
This white cotton number has a button up bodice and high cinched waist making it the perfect fit for almost any body type. It looks sweet and innocent from the front, but when she turns around, you can see the flirty scooped back complete with a bow. The dress is ideal for shopping days — easy to get on and off and light enough to keep you cool. She wore a rose gold, chunky necklace and cognac colored strappy wedges to show off her long legs. This trendy Fashionista wasn’t afraid to break the rules a little, mixing her gold accessories with some silver in her bracelets. I loved her mustard yellow cross-body, as it added the perfect touch of color to her simple look.
Just like we all have our go-to LBD, I am confident that every Fashionista has a fun, little white dress in their closet just dying to be worn. Just like black looks good on everyone, it’s always possible to pull off white! Whether it’s a flowing sun dress like this one, or a flirty, fitted mini, we can all find the perfect little white dress for our own figure and style. The best part about white is that it’s the easiest color to accessorize, as literally anything goes. Bright colored bangles or satchels are fun when paired with your LWD, but you could also add a pop of color with your favorite flats too. Make sure that you never take away from your classic look however, just enhance it with the right accessories.
Say goodbye to your LBD for the season and brighten up your features with the white dress that looks best on you. With this ultra-feminine trend, you’re sure to make a lasting impression. So flaunt your little white dresses while you still can, after all, Labor Day will be here before you know it.
The little white dress is a standard for the spring/summer season! The color is a brilliant contradiction to the dark hues of winter. The sun is brightly shining and the cool color reflects the heat. How could one not want to have a LWD?!
Designers like Louis Vuitton and Giambattista Valli are spicing up this season favorite with lace and embroidery, giving it more femininity. I just adore this trend! There’s just something compelling about white lace. I presume the liking stems from the magic of a wedding dress, which emanates blissful feelings.
The featured Fashionista graced Union College with a chic long-sleeve white lace dress found at the fabulous H&M. I admire that she chose to keep her makeup and accessories minimal. Therefore, her dress stands out as the focus of her wardrobe. The shoes and matching necklace create a well-coordinated balance, while creating a wonderful contrast with the dress. The pop of electric pink polish on her nails is a great touch of color. This Fashionista’s look is clean and feminine— a trending look on the runways.
I love the look of wearing a white dress with simple add-ons, but you should not restrict yourself when it comes to fashion! Perhaps, you want to create a bolder look by adding a neon belt and fun-colored jewelry. Maybe, you want to be more casual chic by throwing on a denim shirt or vest. The possibilities are limitless!
I do advise not wearing your white lace dress to a wedding — you just may upstage the bride.
Accompanied by chunky pearls and long gloves, Audrey Hepburn’s classic figure-fitting little black dress in Breakfast At Tiffany’s made the LBD a staple for every Fashionista’s wardrobe. And although some of my favorite dresses are in fact, little and black, I have been looking for something new and fresh for summer: a little white dress (LWD).
When I saw this Fashionista sporting an adorably chic LWD, I had to stop her and ask to take a photo. The geometric cutouts around the neck of the dress initially caught my eye, but when I took a closer look, I fell in love with the way this Fashionista accessorized her little white dress.
In contrast to the intentionally fancy way Audrey wore her LBD, this Fashionista’s look is casual and effortless — perfect for a warm day on campus. Her wide belt and chic leather sandals tie together this casually cute ensemble, but my favorite thing about this look is the way this Fashionista’s red lipstick pops next to her LWD. With her fair skin, soft dress and red lip, this Fashionista looks like a modern-day Snow White.
Some people associate white with innocence, wedding gowns and the “do not wear after Labor Day” adage, but I firmly believe the LWD can be just as versatile and fabulous as the traditional LBD. To transform this little white dress from day to night, exchange the belt and sandals for nude pumps, colorful earrings and an oversized clutch. You will look and feel just as elegant and classic in your LWD as you do in your traditional LBD, all while sporting a new, unique trend.
While it hasn't been very nice out yet this summer, that doesn't mean you can't still dress like a Fashionista. You may think it's all about the little black dress, but think again. Black may be comfortable and flattering, but this is the season for the LWD: the little white dress. Summer is the time for dinner parties and barbeques on the beach, so why not stick out in a cute white dress? It's obvious that white looks best when you are tan! I spotted this Fashionista wearing a white little dress by Lilly Pulitzer. What's great about this white dress is the embellished stones across the top. You can dress down your whites by wearing a cute beach cover up, or try wearing a long white dress to a laid back summer dinner. You can never have too much white!
From affordable to expensive, there are many different styles of white dresses to choose from! Even white bathing suits are in this season, which are actually better to wear because they won't get dirty as easily as a dress. To top off this Fashionista's outfit, this Fashionista also wears a Hermes bracelet, charm bracelets, and strappy Guess heels.
HINT: If you think white may be too revealing, try the charming array of off-white, ivory and cream colored dresses.
It is time to put away your little black dress and bring out your little white dress for this spring and summer. LWDs are just like LBDs, but lighter, of course. They are bold statements that can stand alone without any accessories or they are the perfect blank canvases ready to be bejeweled with lots of accessories or layered with other clothing items. What’s so great about the LWD is that there are a wide variety of materials it can be made out of, which makes the dress very versatile.
Crisp white dresses, just like this Fashionista, are perfect for formal situations and can easily be worn from day-to-night with a simple change of accessories and a gray blazer. For a daytime look with a crisp form-fitting LWD, exchange the blazer for a cardigan and the boots with some cute flats. Lacey white dresses display a vintage, pure vibe that also looks great during the day or night. One definite must-have for this spring/summer is a sheer white dress. You can either wear a slip under the dress or if you feel a little risky just wear a floral colored bandeau or a black lacey bralette with thick lacey booty shorts.
Bright colors are also a big trend for this spring/summer. A bright pair of pumps or wedges is a splendid match with LWDs. I loved how this Fashionista wore neutral colored palettes with her LWD but then accented it with the bright, red beaded necklace. Another way to play with bright colors and a LWD is by wearing bright neon lip colors. The MAC VIVA GLAM Lady Gaga pink lipstick would be a fashionably bold statement with a LWD.
The classic little black dress is getting a new makeover for fall – in a different color! In a previous blog, I discussed the up and coming trend of wearing white in the winter. This trend continued to surface on the Missouri State campus and could be seen on many Fashionistas roaming the sidewalks. Trends on campus tend to catch on quickly, since most students see each other at least once a day, passing each other in the library or on the way to class.
Even though there are over 21,000 students at MSU, fashion knows no bounds! Winter whites are the biggest trend to be seen around and our gal this week is a great example of this trend! Her classic sheath dress has unique detailing right past the waistline, which adds to the visual interest of the outfit. Fashionable outerwear is also a huge trend for this fall/winter. For a sweet, sophisticated look check out this single breasted coat from Forever 21. The texture gives the coat a modern twist on a classic silhouette!
For a "bad girl chic" look try a leather jacket like this one from Torn – the stud detailing adds an edgier look to any white dress. Don't forget to add on piles of great accessories, like Audrey Hepburn-esque sunglasses from Etsy, strands of pretty pearls from Macy's, and tons of costume jewelry rings and bracelets from J.C. Penney to complete the look. Mixing classic black accessories with modern white outerwear and dresses is a stylish way to vamp up your image!
Remember to keep all these ideas in mind when out on the perfect outfit hunt, and always let your personality shine through!
Labor Day is here and this is the time where you should indulge in the color white or so the myth goes. For me Labor Day marks the end of the summer season and introduces the fall fashions, trends and colors, including white but mainly off-whites. All throughout campus I’ve seen individuals wear white in a variety of trendy ways, even during this rainy weather. But my most favorite look would have to be the classic white dress that I spotted while taking shelter from the pouring rain.
This Fashionista wanted to keep things simple and elegant. She wanted her dress to be the main focal point so she used darker colored accessories, such as the dark colored belt and handbag, as a contrast to her dress. The dress has eyelet detailing all through the skirt portion of the dress and some ruching in the bodice. Now I’m sure many of you have heard that it’s taboo to wear white after Labor Day but that just isn’t the case anymore. There are tones of white clothes that can be worn for different occasions. Most likely people have considered winter white colors to be more of a tan or off-white color. Regardless of what everyone is saying white is here to stay year around.
Hint: If you’re looking to recreate a similar look I’ve got the perfect winter option here. Going all white is fun and classy but if you want some contrast try pairing a white dress with black leggings or look for a dress that has some black in its detailing. Then finish things off with a pair of booties.
