A couple of seasons ago, Dolce&Gabbana, The Row and Salvatore Ferragamo showed women in androgynous looks on the runway, but this trend has been around for longer than just a few fall/winter seasons. I guess you could say it all started back in the ‘50s and ‘60s when actresses started wearing jeans on the silver screen, even though Levi’s first featured them in Vogue in 1935. There’s something curious about taking an item of clothing that is typically meant for a man and putting it on a woman’s curvy figure. It plays down a woman’s softness and creates a powerfully unexpected look.
Celebrities throughout history have been big fans of the androgynous look. There was David Bowie and Grace Jones in the ‘70s, Annie Lennox and Bret Michaels in the ‘80s and Marilyn Manson and Michael Jackson in the ‘90s. Current celebrities like Kristen Stewart and Janelle Monae are still keeping the look strong with tuxedo-inspired red carpet looks and minimal makeup.
Today’s Fashionista exhibits a few different elements of androgyny. She wore a plaid collared shirt buttoned all the way to the top with a leather jacket, wide-brimmed hat and unisex Ray-Ban Wayfarers. She balanced it all out with some figure-hugging cuffed black denim and a pair of black leather brogues. She went with a minimal makeup look, which allowed her feminine beauty to show through.
Mixing masculine pieces into your wardrobe creates a new and interesting look for any modern woman. Because the timeless style has been present since the sophisticated man, it only makes sense that women should be able to pull it off for years to come.
