The maxi dress has become a summer staple. I used to associate anything floor length with either a gown fit for the Academy Awards or unfortunately a cheesy prom dress. I swore off anything maxi for the longest time — no pun intended. This year I have had a dramatic change of heart. Every once in a while I’ll break out my inner Stevie Nicks and sport the maxi instead of the mini. It is an easy layer to throw on in the heat that keeps you looking stylish but also infinitely comfortable.
This Fashionista stood out to me. Her cobalt blue dress grabbed my eye from across the street but her impeccable styling made it perfection. Her cream leather jacket accented with studs keeps her airy dress grounded and from looking too beachy. The flat sandals are functional and their simplicity take away nothing from her ensemble. She tops everything off with some classic aviators and a top knot.
I’d like to draw attention to the very subtle detail evident in this shot: the slit up the side. The small flash of leg is the key to her outfit success. The hint of skin breaks up the central blue column, and even allows the Fashionista to show off her adorable sandals. It also keeps the maxi from dominating the rest of her outfit. The slit shows some skin in a tasteful, sexy way, without being overtly so.
Want to rock the maxi look but still show some leg? It is possible, I promise. Try this one from NASTY GAL. Or if you’d like to show a little more, try a skirt with a high-low hem or a hint of sheer. Add a cute jacket like this Fashionista, or a denim vest when it’s just too hot to wear sleeves. Top it all off with a pair of chic sunnies and you’re ready to go.
