STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Military Man

It’s often pretty hard to find anything too unique to photograph when it’s snowing outside and everyone is bundled up in a black, down coat. Little style exists on campus when students are struggling to keep warm. I saw this Fashionisto from across campus, thinking his look was very European.

Oddly enough he is an exchange student from France visiting for a year. He definitely has the whole look down — skinny jeans, cut-off gloves and most importantly the coat. The coat is a Schott — a durable, well-known American brand. I went to the website to check it out and here is a bit of what I found, “these are the type of people that blaze their own trail with a quiet swagger … they’re doers, risk-takers, a** kickers, problem-solvers and free spirits”. It’s pretty cool to find a brand I have never heard of, but has an established presence in American culture. He actually purchased his on sale at Urban Outfitters for much cheaper than some of the ones on the Schott site.

His look is a pretty easy one to recreate. Really it just takes a little more effort than putting on a puffy sports jacket or a black coat that camouflages you among all other college kids battling the snow. These jackets do carry a steep price, but it’s likely that with their history they’ll be pretty durable and prove worth their cost.

If you’re looking for something a bit less expensive, check out some of these military coats at ASOS. It’s a perfect time to snag a reasonably priced, on-sale, winter coat for next year’s harsh weather. There’s likely to be a few out there that weren’t purchased after having such a ridiculously warm winter.

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Military Man

Who doesn’t love a man in uniform? Ladies, whether we like to admit it or not, a man in uniform is pretty irresistible. A military man in uniform—forget it. Recent runway trends have come to make our not-so-secret obsession a reality. Now us girls can don a fantastically masculine garment and still look ultra-feminine and chic. But, despite the military look becoming androgynous, the guys still know how to grab attention in uniform.

This Fashionisto looks bomb in his green military jacket. The jacket, he informs me, is a family relic—his father’s from his days of service in the Coast Guard. The back of the jacket displays a faded insignia reading “USCG”, standing for the United States Coast Guard. He proudly rocks the look, aware that the jacket is the real thing.

Guys, try this looker from Ralph Lauren. The designer has endless options for that military-esque style and also always has classic preppy undertones in each piece of clothing—perfect for a clean, uniform-inspired outfit. Ladies, this poncho-like hooded coat from Urban Outfitters is so unique and can be worn during winter or spring. If you’re looking for an entirely classic military look, try this number.

Hint: With a military jacket, the beauty is in the details. Like our Fashionisto, the greatest part is the sentimental value (the stamped letters on the back). The best detail can be found in the buttons, so look for a jacket with buttons that have an “eagle” figure, for example; anything that reminds you of good old US of A. A patch on the breast of a jacket gives off even more of an service-man/woman aura.
