Every Fashionista has a favorite store in which she could, in all seriousness, outfit herself in its apparel from head-to-toe each and every day. As with many of my peers at Northwestern, that store for me would definitely, hands down, be J.Crew, a perfect manifestation of so much of Northwestern's student culture. But as is true with Northwestern as a university, most students here have a little kick to them, meaning that you'll rarely see a Fashionista outfitted in all J.Crew, Free People or vintage wear. This fact is an important one that I believe speaks a lot about our fine institution as a whole — that we well-rounded, yet not afraid to mix it up every so often.
I spotted this Fashionista studying for a final in our student center, and saw that she exemplified this trend of mixing preppy, classic staples with something a little edgier. During finals week (thank you, quarter system) when it is easier than ever to throw on your favorite, worn-in sweatshirt over a pair of leggings, I always appreciate seeing students who take that extra moment in the morning to make their outfit as fabulous as they are. I am always amazed at how much better I feel in a well put-together outfit, even if I am just sitting at a library desk all day.
To get this Fashionista's look, consider pairing a classic, basic blouse or cardigan with another edgy piece, be it a vest, a funky belt or, as with this Fashionista, combat boots. One of my favorite timeless items of clothing is the tuxedo shirt, and J.Crew makes a beautiful version. It is both incredibly stylish, and also clean enough to pair with some lace-up boots, like these from Steve Madden.
And even if you don't mix the classic with funky already, don't be afraid to step out of your comfort zone!
