STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Not Your Grandma’s Crochet

You just opened your Christmas gift from your grandma. You were hoping for a new Marc by Marc Jacobs bag or a sweet pair of Ray-Ban sunglasses. However, you got something a little more unexpected — a crochet sweater. As a true Fashionista (and a good grandchild), you know that you can incorporate this seemingly difficult piece of clothing into a chic and stylish outfit.

This Fashionista rocks her homemade-inspired crochet sweater by letting it take center stage over a basic orange tank, denim skinny jeans, and a chic black purse. Not to be overshadowed, she tops her outfit off with a pair of faux-leather brown boots with gold accents. In sunny California, anything goes when it comes to January fashion. From shorts to tank tops to sunglasses, rocking the summer wear on the daily is common for a University of Southern California student. That being said, although crochet isn’t typical winter attire, it’s always a Do for a SoCal girl.

Although not all of us are lucky enough to live in perfect weather year round, you can incorporate summer and spring trends into every season and still always be in fashion. Crochet comes in many colors and styles; you can go small with a chill crochet shoulder bag or big with an entirely crocheted dress. One of the best parts of crocheted clothing is how versatile they are. Crochet is a texture that can either stand out on its own or be mixed with other interesting textures like velvet or silk.

So next time, make sure to tell Grandma that her homemade goods are always a “do” in your book; who knows, maybe she’ll introduce you to some of her fashion blasts from the past!

Yet, this Fashionista proved that the transition from the wintertime blues is feasible.

Her cropped crochet vest had faux fur trimming, which is perfectly on trend for both fall and spring. This vest is the best of both worlds especially with the unpredictable weather. It can be very tricky when donning denim on denim, but this Fashionista knew how to accessorize. Her neutral vest served as a great way to break up the look.

When shopping during the seasonal limbo, it is key to find pieces that can carry on to the next season. Crochet pieces can be layered over sweaters, thrown over shorts and can even be worn as a bathing suit cover up. The possibilities can be endless if done right.
