STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Plunge Into Grunge

The fashion of today has become a beautiful mix of previous eras. People are able to mix the iconic styles of earlier decades into their wardrobes to create their own unique style. This is what makes today such an interesting era in fashion. The past is always inspiring the present. For example, Prada's Spring 2012 RTW collection was decorated with full skirts and vintage inspired prints straight from the 1950’s. One of my favorite eras to draw inspiration from is the grunge movement that originated in the 1990’s in the Pacific Northwest. The movement had such a strong influence on not only music, but also the fashion scene.

That is where today’s Fashionista comes in. She looks like she could have been a Nirvana groupie circa 1992, and I was totally jealous. This Fashionista starts with a cool band T-shirt and adds a pair of high-waisted denim shorts for a nice base. Her accessories really help to elevate her outfit and add a cool, rocker vibe. She adds a colorful belt and bag to add in a dose of color. The red is then picked up in her subtlety striped tights. The Fashoinista finishes off the look with a pair of aviators and the quintessential boot from the 1990’s: Doc Martens.

Want to channel your inner 90’s child? I suggest investing in a pair of Doc Marten boots. They are extremely sturdy so comfortable. Try a floral or maybe even metallic pair of a spin on the original style. Add a pair of sheer black panty hose, like these American Apparel heart print ones for an extra layer in the fall. Incorporate your favorite T-shirt and denim cut-offs and you’re set.

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Plunge Into Grunge

This week's post may come off a little bias, but when I spotted this Fashionista she instantly reminded me of my favourite trend this season – grunge. It's not everyone's cup of tea but in my opinion the way designers have did it this season, it has the potential to be your favourite tea tipple.

One of the easiest ways to shrug off the grunge concept is to think of it narrow-mindedly. It's not all about messy tatty clothes and lots of black – although that is arguably it's backbone – if you can think outside of it's stereotype then you will most definately be armed with the potential to create really edgy outfits casual or dressy like this Fashionista has done. I love the on-trend deep berry red cable knitted jumper she has thrown on top of her black denim shorts (a grunge staple), it really does scream out the carefree ingrediant that is required to lock this look down. Her black Chelsea boots are another great addition and these are the boots to have this season generally nevermind for the grunge look. They are easy to walk in and carry the right amount of smartness with them to enable them to edge up any outfit. The thin glossy tights break up all of the black in the outfit and makes sure she doesn't blend into her shadow. Extra Fashionista points for her wearing such a thin pair in such cold weather conditions! I adore the hint of turquoise with her large stone ring, it adds a cute quirkiness to the outfit.

What I love about her outfit overall is that she has tied her hair up and kept her make-up fresh with a stand-out red lip. It ties in with her outfit so well. Never forget about matching your make-up to your outfit, in my opinion it's the deal-breaker!

Are you ready to take the plunge and go grunge? I'm already there!
