STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Prep School Perfection

Designers from all over are bringing their A-game to the runways this week by presenting their spring 2011 ready-to-wear looks to the general public, and giving all of us Fashionistas and Fashionistos an idea of what to expect trend-wise next season. I have been checking Elle.com’s Fashion Week coverage religiously in between classes and work, and I can definitely say that spring 2011 is looking fabulous in the fashion world! One of the collections that stood out to me the most was Tommy Hilfiger’s. To me, he is one of the most impressive designers when it comes to epitomizing the traditional, Americana-inspired style. His spring 2011 Ready-to-Wear collection perfectly showcases the prep-school look at its finest and is perfect for a spring wardrobe. That being said, my style advice of the week for all of you is to channel your inner prepster and emulate Tommy Hilfiger’s bright, fun spring collection.

This Fashionista seems to have incorporated a little bit of that prep school style into her wardrobe. She paired a printed floral dress with a pair of TOMS shoes and a yellow striped cardigan. The cardigan definitely gives off that preppy vision, with its bright coloring and horizontal stripes. It’s a throwback to the old-school sweaters from the 1950s and it pays homage to the prepster style that Tommy Hilfiger’s collection was inspired by. To copy this Fashionista’s look, pair a cardigan with a simple tailored shift dress and classic brown oxfords. This look gives off that polished, put-together vibe that is the heart of the prep school style.

It’s practically a cardinal sin to talk about the prep-school style without mentioning Blair Waldorf, Leighton Meester’s character on the hit show Gossip Girl. Blair’s style is the definition of polished; her wardrobe and perfect style is one of the main reasons that I tune into the show. With the right accessories, her type of look is easy to incorporate into your wardrobe. Our featured Fashionista represents the cool and casual side to this iconic look, while Blair’s take on it is a bit more upscale. Either way, take my style advice and give the prepster look a shot! Use Tommy Hilfger’s spring 2011 collection for inspiration and make it your own.
