STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Pretty in Peplum

Peplum has proven itself to be one of the latest and greatest trends that just keeps reinventing itself as of lately. From skirts to dresses to tops peplum is everywhere and the flattering shape doesn’t look like it’s going anywhere anytime soon. Peplum is a great thing to wear if you have a narrow build and don’t have a lot of curves. The blousy shape helps to create the illusion of curves and can give any Fashionista a Kardashian-like figure instantaneously. Peplum can also be translated into so many different fabrics that it can be worn throughout all seasons.

Today’s Fashionista is looking stylish in this on-trend peplum top in a cotton lace material. The floral detail of the fabric really sets it apart from other plain shirts and the piping on the bodice and three-button detail give the shirt a well-crafted and finished look. This shirt gives off an elegant impression and is unusual, so when you slip it on, it can easily style a whole outfit. If you’re as in love with this top as I am, grab your very own here by Free People.

Today’s Fashionista paired her pretty peplum top with a pair of basic dark skinny jeans. Pants like these, of course, should be a staple in every Fashionista's closet. Her fun Minnetonka black fringe boots add an extra pop of unique style to this look for a great finishing touch. A simple silver pendant necklace and a big smile complete this trendy fall outfit that anyone would look amazing in!

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Pretty In Peplum

This fall has been filled with lots of distinct patterns, pullover comfy sweaters and perfect collars for around the neck, but one trend that has carried through to this season is the universally flattering, waist-defining, peplum trend.

There is no question as to why the peplum ‘80s trend has dominated the runway for the past two seasons. The answer is because it is absolutely stunning. This little flounce at the waist brings out every woman’s femininity and designers Jason Wu, Badgley Mischka and Cushnie et Ochs did just that.

This Fashionista took this peplum trend and flaunted it with poise. The high neck of the dress makes it sleek and sophisticated. Effortless, this easy, on-the-go, sleek dress makes this style that much better. Not only is the dress itself gorgeous, the color, bordeaux, is a color to look out for this fall. She pairs this slim fitting bordeaux peplum dress with a statement making black belt with a gold buckle. This tiny Fashionista gives herself some height by strapping on some black and nude edgy studded heels.

Common stores like H&M, Zara and Topshop all have done a beautiful job mimicking the peplum trend from the runways to street wear; however, this trend can be overly challenging and daunting to many. As a Style Guru, I promise that peplum is easier than it looks to pull off and surprisingly more versatile. So that is where I am here to tell you otherwise with three different ways to wear this classy peplum style.

Wear your peplum with slim fitting pants and throw away your big, bulky jackets for fall and purchase a statement-making jacket like this cableknit peplum jacket from Free People. Together, wear this Zara peplum top with a tight pencil skirt. Yes, this peplum is already formfitting, but it will be a look people will never forget. Try playing with various colors and bold pattern combinations. This fall I have found a crazy new obsession with animal print. Try pairing this black peplum top with this knee-length cheetah pencil skirt by BCBGMAXAZRIA.

Put this cream, casual peplum top from ASOS with sandals and shorts. This fall has been much warmer than in the past, so wearing shorts is still acceptable on certain days. Even though wearing shorts can seem laid back, by adding a peplum top it is possible for a more fashion-forward look. These sweater shorts from Urban Outfitters are nothing far from fabulous. It will be a look of grunge meets sophistication.

It’s safe to say that peplum is here to stay, at least for now and the foreseeable future. This fall, add a little splash of peplum into your wardrobe, I promise you won’t regret it.

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Pretty in Peplum

Boulevard season has started, which means that every Fashionista is out on the green grass to showcase their most fashionable red, white and blue. Though everyone looked great, I snapped pictures of this Fashionista because of her white peplum dress. It was the perfect mix of dressy and casual, and is such a flattering shape on everyone. She paired her dress with cowboy boots for the football game. For a dressier look for a night on the town, heels would look perfect. This Fashionista’s dress was strapless for the hot day on the boulevard, but peplum design comes in many other styles.

Peplum dresses can be strapless, cap-sleeved or sleeveless. My favorite way to wear peplum is in a shirt version like this Topshop peplum top. It is very versatile and can be worn with pants or a skirt. There are many options right now for peplum, which is becoming a must own piece for the fall season. You can find peplum in lace, leather, prints and solids. It is such a pretty and classic feminine style. You can never go wrong with a peplum outfit. Another way to wear the peplum style is in a skirt form. Yes, peplum comes as a dress, shirt and skirt— endless possibilities! This Zara skirt comes in multiple colors. I have it in white, and it has become a staple in my nighttime wardrobe. You can easily pair it with a blouse or tank top and heels or booties for a night out.

Both peplum shirts and skirts are fun and versatile. For an easy Fashionista outfit, you can stick with the classic peplum dress. This long-sleeved dress is perfect for the upcoming cooler weather. If you are looking for the classic peplum look, this alice + olivia dress combines many new trends into one dress. The kelly green color is a must for fall, as well as the cap-sleeves and exposed zipper. Nailing all these trends is easy with this dress!

I am looking forward to wearing this pretty peplum look this fall season. With all the options out there, you can too.

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Pretty In Peplum

Nothing adds charm to a basic outfit like a few well-placed frills. One of the latest trends to be recycled from past decades is the peplum, a flounce of fabric that encircles the waist. A peplum adds graceful curves to a top or skirt and can give even the most simple of pieces that “Wow!” factor.

This Fashionista kept her on-campus style effortless with a black maxi skirt and a neutral tote. However, don’t let the simplicity of this white and black ensemble fool you. The intricate crocheted pattern of the tank lends a fun and delicate texture to the outfit that is contrasted with the rough weave of her bag. The peplum waist of the top brings a touch of drama to the outfit and embellishes the simplicity of the maxi skirt.

To prevent a peplum waist from being overwhelming, keep the rest of the apparel tailored. Since peplums add fabric to the garment, it is important to keep the silhouette of the flounced piece, as well as the entire outfit in mind. The maxi skirt’s dark color contrasts well with the bright white of the top and provides a neutral background for the peplum. Additionally, the diagonal seams of the skirt keep the fit close rather than billowing. This Fashionista’s creation of a sleek but casual silhouette balances the lacy, peplum top with ease.

A graceful top like this Fashionista’s would be perfect paired with a slim maxi skirt or a pair of skinnies. A belt further emphasizes the top’s peplum and the Fashionista’s waist, keeping excess volume to a minimum.

While adding fabric and exaggerated curves to our clothing is the last thing most of us want to do, peplums create volume in the right places and can actually be extremely flattering. With a plethora of options from the spring 2012 runways, there are no limits to how this trend can be styled. Peplums now grace blazers, dresses, skirts and even swim suits.
