STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Pretty in Polka-Dots

In my opinion, polka-dots are one of the greatest patterns to ever exist. They are so versatile and elegant at the same time depending on the piece with the polka-dots and the colors. Black and white polka-dots portray elegance that is hard to recreate. Black and white polka-dots can also be fun and playful. Let's go back to the 1950s, a time when polka-dots were all the rage, paired with cherry red lips, sassy hair and diamonds to match. Another great trend including polka-dots this season is mixing two patterns together: floral and polka dot. The two patterns complement each other while not being too matchy matchy. The combination brings together elegance with color adding a fun and exciting twist to something classic. Don’t be afraid to mix and match different patterns together.

Look in magazines like InStyle for inspiration, you can learn a lot from what magazines have to offer. This Fashionista took the classic black and white polka-dot dress and added a touch of color and a buffer around the waist to add to the pattern of the dress. Although her shoes don't stand out as much as they did in person, this Fashionista was wearing a yellow pair of flats.

I love these yellow flats by Steve Madden!  The yellow added a modern touch to her classic polka-dot dress, you can never go wrong with modern!

This Fashionista wears a navy blue and white Aqua blouse that is perfect to wear on a mild, sunny day. While this Fashionista's exact blouse is unavailable in stores right now, there is an Aqua tank top and dress that are very similar. The only trick thing about the polka-dot trend is that it can sometimes be a little overwhelming. If you choose polka dots, think about your size. If you are on the petite side, you should wear small to medium polka-dots and if you're a little bigger you should try bigger, bolder pieces. This Fashionista pairs her blouse with Seven jeans and a brown belt from Steph (located downtown on Lebanon St.) She also wears sand colored, Tory Burch flats that also gives her outfit a unique twist, especially since the Reva flat has inevitably become a bit exhausted.

When you're browsing online for spring trends, don't rule out polka-dots! Try not to think of the print as childish because there is definitely a way to wear it in a feminine and sophisticated manner. Follow this Fashionista's example and add some fun to your spring 2011 closet by wearing this classic print.
