STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Schlubby Chic

While the calendar tells us it’s time for fall, the weather report indicates a full on summer surge – 90s and sunny all week long. I’m not sure about you, but I have been dying to don my skinny jeans, new combat boots, oversized sweaters, and colorful scarves for what feels like far too long. But this Fashionista found a way to beat the heat by blending the lasting effects of Nashville’s summer sun with the oncoming fall trends of loose and luxurious. It’s all over shopping websites – baggy is back. Now I’m not talking about grabbing a pair of sweatpants and kicking back, but as Forever 21’s homepage puts it, “Modern Harem” is in for fall, with loose fits, off-the-shoulder tops, and gauzy, cropped sweaters that make for a flattering silhouette.

I love the easy fit of this Fiets Voor 2 top from Anthropologie, similar to this mesh, knit top from Forever 21. The thin fabric and slightly sheer quality adds just a tinge of sex appeal, while her tank top underneath makes the ensemble appropriate for class. The light grey color fits in with the neutral heavy collections that are big this season, which also makes the top versatile enough to be worn with a variety of bottoms. When the weather begins to actually resemble the season, this breezy sweater will look great when paired with boots and a brightly patterned scarf. Whoever said baggy couldn’t be beautiful, sophisticated, or stylish?

Hint: The key to pulling off the baggy trend is to keep subtle feminine undertones. This Fashionista has it down with a slightly sheer sweater and a flirtatious off-the-shoulder cut. This sweater by Cheap Monday exhibits how to be sheer with knitwear – though I advise a tank top underneath if you’re going to class. Another way to keep it feminine is by using fun colors and patterns. This oversized, wide neck sweater by Opening Ceremony is sure to add a burst of color to any dreary autumn day. Enjoy staying trendy and cozy all in one look, and happy shopping!
