STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: School Girl Chic

As midterms come to a close and finals are looming, it is easy to become less motivated to get dolled up for class. However, this Fashionista seems to put an academic spin on her ensemble. Instead of being overwhelmed by her studies, she embraces the academic look in her outfit. In my mind, she took a cue from my favorite guilty pleasure, Gossip Girl. Season one and two to be specific. I drooled over the uniforms of Blair Waldorf and Serena Vanderwoodsen as they accessorized with neckties, heeled boots and headbands. I desperately yearned for my high school to immediately install a uniform dress code, but it was an unreasonable thought. If you’re equally captivated by the prep-school uniform look, then you’ll love this look.

To be honest, it was her full-skirted silhouette that caught my eye and the rest of the look did not disappoint. You can grab your own mini from American Apparel where they have many similar styles. I do recommend rocking the rich jewel toned teal she selected. She then complemented her mini with a slim, crewneck, cable knit sweater in a light ballet hue. Try this one from J.Crew for a similar look. Finally, she topped off her look with a pair of simple gold drop earrings, black patent leather flats and a black canvas bow to tie up half of her hair. The overall look is what I’d call preppy chic, which seemed perfect for a Sunday at the library.

If you want to further embrace your inner Gossip Girl, I recommend adding in a few more preppy touches. Try adding in a school boy blazer, a pair of gray knee socks (thigh-highs if you’re feeling daring) and an adorable pair of oxford lace-ups. You’ll look like one of Blair Waldorf’s chic minions in the best way possible.

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: School Girl Chic

This stunning Fashionista truly dazzled me this week with her absolutely flawless style play on the classic “school girl” look. Taking into account the season, as well as her own personal preferences, she creates an ensemble that truly wows as well as suits the autumn weather to a tee.

She starts off with a couple of the basics for a traditional school girl outfit—boyfriend cardigan, simple solid skirt, and high socks. However, she adds a few original and quirky twists into the mix that make her outfit shine. Firstly, her light brown suede wedges with laces are both a sexy and weather appropriate choice, especially for those of you that are having a very hard time putting your sandal wedges in the back of your closet! She also pairs her white lacy knee socks with a pair of opaque red tights that peek out from under her a-line tan skirt. Complete the look with a skinny brown belt, flowing floral top, dark green cardigan, and cute black headband, and we have a very serious candidate for most adorable Fashionista of the week!

Try out your own ideas on a school girl or boy outfit this week, Fashionistas/os! Feel free to make your looks as eccentric and original as you want. However, I do suggest sticking with at least one classic “school” themed piece. Fashionistos, for you I suggest incorporating either a sleek blazer, like this corduroy one form Michael Kors, or a slimming cardigan, like this one from Paul Smith Jeans, into your look. Also, adding a leather messenger bag definitely would help to top things off!

Fashionistas, you have thousands of options in making a personal schoolgirl look. In preparation for the cooling temperatures, I suggest substituting a few items for warmer ones, such as a simple black headband with a cozy black head wrap to keep the ears snug. For footwear, Mary Janes are a great schoolgirl choice, and if you are feeling particular bold, I would suggest trying out a pair of Mary Jane wedges, like this one from Nine West

Have fun and make your schoolgirl/schoolboy look your own!
