STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Singing In The Rain

Today was an almost fruitless search for a Fashionista. The recent rainy days have broken a streak of glorious, sunny spring weather here at Bucknell. Under the dreary threat of rain showers, campus is a soggy and homogeneous mass of sweatpants and rain-ready clothes. It was difficult to find a Fashionista that didn’t surrender to the overwhelming desire to ditch fashion for comfort in the gloomy weather. On the cusp of losing faith, I was thrilled to spot a determined Fashionista rocking a pale pink scarf, perfectly cuffed jeans and a cute pair of Sperry Top-Siders. This Fashionista was the ideal subject for this week’s post with her fashionable and optimistic outfit.

Dressing for the rain always comes down to finding the perfect balance between comfort, practicality and style. Most rainy mornings Bucknell students turn to their go-to Hunter boots to help navigate a damp campus, which is why I appreciated this Fashionista’s different choice for waterproof footwear. She has on a pair of Sperry's, which are classic shoes that are great for almost any weather. They come in tons of different colors and types like metallic and pretty pink seersucker. These shoes are a great alternative to rain boots because you can pair them with other bottoms besides tight skinnies or leggings that need to be tucked in and are a typical rainy day staple.

To help fight the chill in the air, this Fashionista wrapped a big scarf around her neck that allows her to maintain a minimal, casual aesthetic as well as a functional shield from the cold. This extra layer is perfect for unpredictable spring weather and can be easily removed for those brief spots of sunshine.

Take a cue from the pictured Fashionista and look for alternative fashion choices for rainy days. If these April showers bring May flowers, what will May Fashionistas have to offer?

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Singing in the Rain

When it rains, it pours.  But that certainly does not mean that one should let it affect their style and outfit!  In fact, Fashionistas should take complete advantage of the rough weather to show off their chic outdoor gear.

This Fashionista appeared to be fine and sunny during a day of nasty inclement weather.  She proved that it’s possible to look wonderful on such an unpleasant day.  I loved the general outfit ensemble, but as soon as I saw her choice of rain boots, I knew that I must make her the subject of my next CollegeFashionista post.

Shopping for rain boots can be very difficult.  You need a pair that will not only last but also be completely waterproof and dependable.  I have gone though numerous pairs of rain boots in my past that have ripped on their own due to low quality rubber, which then allows water to pierce through.  However, my life changed when I got my first pair of Hunter rain boots for Christmas last year.  They remain one of my favorite items because of their reliability and appealing features.  Hunter Boot has a variety of different styled rain boots in a wide selection of great colors making a hard decision for any Fashionista/o to make.

Aside from her rubber kicks, I loved the way that she paired her boots with a popular pair of high-waisted shorts.  She demonstrates how this summer item can definitely be transitioned into the fall.  Tommy Hilfiger reveals this trend during his fall 2010 runway show.  Urban Outfitters has a great pair of shorts for sale in a wide selection of colors at the moment.

Overall, this Fashionista represented modish style on a day when it would seem impossible to do so.  My advice this week is to take advantage of a gloomy and depressing day by standing out and shining to the rest.

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Singing in the Rain

And so it has begun, we enjoyed the warm weather while it lasted here in Central, PA, but the rain has finally come. One thing to look forward to is the closet full of new fashion decisions. The sun barely peaked in State College the past two days, but this Fashionista still managed to have a smile on her face. Her festive cardigan shines through the rain and is a great option to stay warm, yet chic during the long days. Paired with gray skinny jeans, traditional raincoat and simple flats this Fashionista managed to stay on style point while all of her instincts were screaming sweatpants and T-shirt.

While a cardigan and jeans seems pretty relaxed, it is the simple accents that make this Fashionista stand out in the crummy weather. Her floral cardigan is trimmed with simple ruffles and crystal buttons, putting a spin on a classic and traditional outfit. She keeps a cohesive color scheme throughout and it is clear that she put thought into selecting each piece from her wardrobe.

Hint: Some of the best stores to find cozy, fall sweaters includes Anthropologie and J Crew, but you never know where you will find your favorite go-to knit. Try looking at some second hand stores or even your dad's closet. You would be surprised how well your dad's forgotten '70s wear goes with your pair of boyfriend jeans. Nothing is comfier on a rainy evening than an oversized, vintage wool sweater.
