STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: The Bolder, The Better

While visiting friends at the University of Wisconsin Madison last weekend, I spotted this trendy Urban Outfitters employee strolling State Street. Her bold tribal leggings pack a serious sartorial punch that, when paired with her leather jacket, gives this Fashionista a strong and edgy vibe.

The tribal trend, seen on the spring 2012 runways of J. Mendel, L.A.M.B. and Donna Karan, continues for fall in the form of bold prints and colors. Louis Vuitton and Prada originally displayed daring mixes of graphic prints for fall. More recently, Tracy Reese showcased geometric patterned skirts, tops and dresses in early September’s New York Fashion Week.

The style message is clear: the bolder, the better. Tight tribal leggings are not just courageous, but comfortable too. To get the look, try these red patterned leggings from American Apparel. For even more audacious legging lovers, check out the selection at Black Milk. They have a beautiful pair of tribal leggings. Various versions of the galaxy leggings keep popping up on my Instagram feed, so they must be pretty cool too.

Moving on from patterns to materials, this Fashionista’s leather jacket is a perfect pick for fall. Leather emerged in a myriad of forms on the runways for fall, manipulated into front-slit skirts, straight trousers, puffy vests, sheath dresses, blouses and—of course—jackets. According to Elle, leather’s “utilitarian yet luxe” qualities are meant to redefine femininity from ruffles and florals to a tougher, more resilient feminine strength. This move away from ultra-femininty is echoed in self-proclaimed “Man Repeller” Leandra Medine’s blog along with the current popularity of loafers and menswear in women’s fashion.

Getting in touch with her own warrior goddess, this Fashionista paired her leather jacket with a sweatshirt for a relaxed, layered look. However, a leather jacket could just as easily be dressed up with a skirt and a pair of heels, making it a versatile day-to-night piece. To get the look without smashing your piggy bank, try a faux-leather bomber jacket like this one from Urban Outfitters

When making those compulsory trips to the mall for back-to-school shopping, take a cue from this bold babe and look for daring patterns and leather pieces. Comfortable, printed pants or leggings and versatile leather jackets will fill out your wardrobe, garner positive attention and keep you in touch with your own inner warrior.

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: The Bolder The Better

When we aren’t at work or the beach it can be tricky to figure out a cute, yet practical summer outfit that's appropriate for all of our various activities. I have always loved simple solid colored shorts but this summer our signature article of clothing is being seen in so many new and rare forms. Shorts are one of the most basic apparel pieces, yet they come in a large variety of colors and patterns, including neon, lace, silk, and khaki to name a few. While dresses are great for an effortless summer look, the perfect pair of shorts can be one of the most important staple pieces in your wardrobe.

This Fashionista caught my eye with her purple J.Crew chino shorts and white eyelet top. After I admired her bright bottoms I looked down and noticed her sky-high wedges, the perfect accessory for any summer outfit. With her shorts’ bold color stealing the show, minimal accessories were needed. She chose to keep things simple with a white top and a metallic belt.

To recreate this Fashionista’s look while adding your own flair at the same time, opt for a pair of flowy royal blue petal shorts and pair them with this coral chiffon tank for an exciting color combination. Accessorize with a long gold necklace and some nude colored wedges and you’re good to go anywhere and everywhere.

Forget about your boring khaki colored shorts and dive into this season’s latest styles to spice up your ensemble, you won’t be disappointed.

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: The Bolder The Better

For many Fashionistas, summer is the season in which feminine style comes into full bloom. The sunshine and the heat make it ideal weather to whip out sheer, lightweight fabrics with pretty floral prints or lacy embroidery. However, as much as I like the delicate and romantic look of lace and florals, I’ve recently fallen in love with street style fasion that challenges this conventional feminine style.

By designing the iconic and controversial female tuxedo in 1966, Yves St. Laurent became one of the first key contributors in redefining what it means to have feminine style. When I saw this Fashionista, I immediately recognized in her a modern take of the bold femininity that Yves St. Laurent had envisioned so many years ago. To start, her boyfriend blazer is a staple piece that every Fashionista should have in their closet. These blazers have incredible versatility and can bring a subtle touch of masculinity to any outfit. The key to the perfect boyfriend blazer is to pick one that is properly fitted to your shoulders, yet loose enough at the sleeves that you can roll them up as you please. For a pop of color (and a bit of a splurge), I also love this blue boyfriend blazer with black accents.

This Fashionista perfectly contrasted the formality of the boyfriend blazer with the rocker chic vibe of her printed denim pants. Note how she picked a print that contained only one pop color to avoid overwhelming the rest of her ensemble. Keeping with the bold black trend of her outfit, she tied her fabulous head-to-toe look together with a pair of black suede heel booties. Just as I thought her outfit could not be any more chic, I couldn’t help but notice this Fashionista’s vintage-inspired black leather box bag and neon orange nail polish (a summer must-have).

The feminine boldness that was once controversial in the fashion world has become more the norm. Modern feminine style is defined less by being delicate and demure and more by being daring and confident. This summer, make YSL proud by wearing pieces with strong, structured silhouettes and making feminine fashion statements that go beyond the conventional realm of “pretty.” The bolder you are, the better.

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: The Bolder The Better

From the bold colors of fall and winter leading into the bright and pastel colors of spring, these color trends are here to stay. In the fall and especially the winter, reds, blues and greens make it easy to make a statement, despite the remnants snow the ground. Moving these colors into the next season and mixing them with vibrant tones creates the perfect look for any occasion.

Today’s Fashionista caught my eye with her black top and boots paired with red pants. This Fashionista’s pop of color and simplicity makes a seasonal statement. The red and black are a great contrast in the winter, and give Fashionistas/os a new boost of confidence. During the colder months it’s easy to resort to comfortable, all black, gray or brown clothes, but with everyone embracing this color trend you’re guaranteed to get an unexpected, flawless look.

This Fashionista chooses a loose top that balances well with the tight pants. On a chillier day, a form fitting blazer or peacoat would look great over this look. I also love the lipstick choice, as it is another great way to announce your presence and look chic. From MAC cosmetics, to my personal favorite, Yves Saint Laurent, there are a plethora of lipsticks to choose from that can complement any ensemble.

Her thigh-high boots help form a look that is ideal for the daytime. However, she could slip on a pair of patent leather heels and she would be ready for a night out on the town. That’s the great part about colored pants; mixing and matching with multiple layers and accessories create different ensembles for different events. Mixing splashes of color with prints is another fashion forward look. For winter, pair with a dash of leopard, or in the spring, add a touch of floral. Choosing any fierce, eye-catching color is a fabulous way to continue throughout the next couple of seasons.
