STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: The Cool Cardigan

It’s a well-known fact that the fashion world is filled with two-person teams such as Marchesa’s Georgina Chapman and Keren Craig, Rodarte’s Kate and Laura Mulleavy and Badgley Mischka's Mark Badgley and James Mischka to name a few. But, for today’s post, I have decided to focus on stylish duos of a different sort – friends. While a statement bauble or shoes in an unconventional color are great ways to complete a look, nothing can make you look better than an equally trendy companion.

These two Fashionistas have been two of my own good friends this past year and both have always amazed me with their natural ability to effortlessly throw together pieces to create looks that, while school appropriate, also evoke a fashion-forward sensibility. As demonstrated by this pair, casual chic is the way to go. Neutral layers, whether it be a great dress shirt topped with a camel coat or a soft-hued dress and a chunky knit, always make for a fantastic look.

What I’m particularly fond of is the striped cardigan donned by the Fashionista on the left. As we begin to transition into warmer days, it is time to store the thick wool coats and to bring back playful knits. In this case, the cream stripes against the black base are a tasteful combination of simplicity and glamour. Simultaneously, this is the type of cardigan that can be dressed up or down. Thrown over a simple tee, you will be ready for class. Thrown over a black mini and paired with some gold jewelry, you will be ready for a night out on the town.

There are a plethora of great options out there for those of you who want this closet must-have. Shopbop offers this asymmetrical striped Vince cardigan that is the perfect mid-season piece. For something with a little more color, this 'Miley' cardigan by Joie is a beautiful option. The orange stripes are fresh and vibrant, the exact mood you will all want to embrace this spring. My personal favorite is this Free People 'Tic Toc' cardigan. The white and gray color scheme allows it to go with essentially any other color and as a college student that needs to make the most out of all my purchases, I really appreciate the versatility of it.
