STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: The Pattern Mix-Up

Earlier in the year we spotted a Fashionista mixing up floral prints in a pulled together mismatch. Here we see three girls going for the same kind of style – this time mixing up an assortment of patterns and textures.

The Fashionista on the left goes for a black and white look that is kept busy by pairing spots and stripes. A daring move that is pulled off because of her commitment to grey scale and choosing well fitted pieces of the same kind of texture. It’s all about balance.

The middle Fashionista chooses statement floral trousers. River Island has similarly amazing floral pants that would be fun to work with, as would these crazy gingham trousers from ASOS. The trousers are quite loud so she is careful not to go overboard by matching them with a wonderfully simple asymmetric transparent red top. The third Fashionista achieves a nice balance in her outfit too by mixing up textures in garments that are otherwise quite simple.

All three girls mix up patterns, textures or both and collectively stand together quite emphatically. Wearing different patterns was a style seen throughout L’Oreal Melbourne Fashion Festival by designers such as Gorman, Leonard Street and Garth Cook. This top by Leonard Street is beautiful, and like this one by Carin Wester it could really be done justice when worn with other complementing pieces. Otherwise something like this would be great to style with other patterns for its neutral colours and minimalist pattern.

It’s fun to have a play around with this look, but remember to be careful; there is a risk of patterns clashing when mixing them up. Stick to gentle colour combinations or just try wearing different textures in an outfit for a similar effect.

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: The Pattern Mix-Up

On a cab ride through New York City yesterday, a style advice segment came on the taxi television saying that mixing prints were huge for this season. What I liked about that was that earlier this week while walking to the Folk Festival in Richmond I ran into a girl sporting just that. It was interesting to see the correlation, because I loved her outfit when I first saw it and then was reinsured by this segment that this is actually big for this fall.

I have also been noticing this trend blowing up on the streets, with celebrities and around the world in Fashion. Just this week a blog posted the cutest couple pulling off a mix-matched look, as well as, Chloë Moretz rocking it at Power of Youth awards in Los Angles. Even designers, like Rodarte, have shown off their mix-matched designs using different fabric for top and bottom that have different looks to the fabrics in order to pull off a unique look.

This week’s Fashionista combined many elements together to give her outfit an interesting and unique twist. Combining her mid-length striped skirt with a printed graphic band T-shirt, it looks classy, with a twist of rocker chic. I also liked that she added the leather fanny pack belt to her outfit because it tied together the entire outfit in an exceptional way. In addition, it’s very easy to pull off a look like this, you just have to be creative in what you are mixing together. Different fabrics always add a nice touch for getting an interesting multi-textural look. Also, blending different patterned garments can be fun as long as you keep in mind that bold is the best. This trend will inspire you to have some fun with your clothing, while also giving you an awesome, fresh look.
