STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: The Statement Bag

Walking through Sather Gate after grabbing my morning coffee, I saw this girl outside Dwinelle and had to get a picture of her outfit. There were two things about her outfit that caught my eye: the printed pants and the neon orange Cambridge satchel. I couldn't help but envy how she could pull off the printed pants and adored the way that she toned down her tank and cardigan so that her pants would be the focal point. However, her neon orange satchel prevented her outfit from blending in with the blues and greys all around campus. I'm sure this bag could be spotted from across campus, making this Fashionista very easy to identify.

Though we may not all want a neon bag, we do all need a statement bag in our lives. Personally, I used the same Steve Madden handbag almost my entire senior year of high school, and that was the bag my friends identified me by. While I, like many others, enjoy pairing my outfits with my bags, when I'm simply heading to class or to the dining hall for breakfast I don't spend much time searching for a certain matching bag. Rather, I have my go to bag that can go with almost any outfit. My Steve Madden bag had various shades of brown and grey on it, blending effortlessly with my daily school clothes.

For a statement bag, I would suggest choosing a bag that you love and that's practical. Many of my friends use Longchamp 'Le Pliage – Large' totes that can hold their notebooks, laptops, and everything else they need for class. As for the color, you could pick a brown or black color, which would go great with any color outfit and doesn't show dirt very easily (unlike a white handbag) or you can do what this Fashionista did and pick out a neon bag that would stand out with any outfit. Choose a bag that's durable, (many flimsy handbags made out of a cheap faux leather don't last long as the 'leather' begins to peel off) as you will be using it for an entire school year or even longer. The Cambridge Satchel Company has bags in almost any color, from neon to pastel, and various sizes, and they are very durable. If you haven't found your statement bag yet, it's time to get to shopping!

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: The Statement School Bag

As the school year progresses, I'm always on the lookout for the newest and most stylish bag that makes a statement while still being large enough to carry all of my books, my camera and laptop. So of course this cheerful yellow bag caught my eye through the swarms of black and brown.

This Fashionista is looking spot on by rocking this bright patent yellow messenger bag. It's clearly the focal point of any outfit, but she accents it well with an otherwise fairly neutral color pallet of black and khaki. Her little black bowler hat is lovely but understated and I think you'll agree that her shoes look sturdy and sexy. She accents her statement bag with a tribal print scarf in some of my other favourite fall colors of orange, teal, and burgundy.

Colorful bags are the perfect way to jazz up your wardrobe (I'm an admitted bag lady). I almost exclusively buy messenger bags and backpack during the school year since that's what I carry five out of seven days. New York Fashion Week has given us a slew of new ideas to mull over for spring 2012 and Victoria Beckham's large orange tote was right up my alley. Thus far it looks like the bright colors of yellow, teal, blue, and orange will still rein supreme for winter and into spring, especially if up and coming designer, Thakoon has anything to say about it.

Embrace the lovely fall hues and check out a few notable yellow totes for fall: Modcloth, Zara, or H&M.
