STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Top It Off

With everyone bundled up in bulky jackets, warm scarves and gloves, it can be difficult to exude a sense of personal style and stay warm. Statement coats, wedged booties, riding boots and faux fur scarves are all viable options of cold weather fashion this fall. However, one of my favorite accessories to pull out of the recesses of my closet once the weather turns cool is a hat. Providing a double whammy of warmth and fashion, hats just add that extra oomph to an outfit, not to mention that they are lifesavers on bad hair days.

It was clear from a distance that this Fashionista has style as her vivid houndstooth newsboy cap stood out on campus. She tucked a pair of chic skinnies into black knee-high boots and wrapped up in a black belted peacoat. While a belted coat with a pair of sleek boots cuts a chic figure alone, the houndstooth-patterned hat creates a minimal yet elegant look.

Hats made a huge splash for fall 2012 trends as Marc Jacobs sent delightfully bright and gargantuan headpieces down the runway. Topshop also offers more compact and affordable versions of fur hats. With a feminine and sophisticated silhouette, cloche hats add a bit of ‘20s glamour to any ensemble. Personally, I do not think you can go wrong with a fedora. They are versatile and flatter every face shape. An oxblood fedora combines two heavy-hitting fall trends and will perfectly accent a casual fall outfit. Whichever style you choose, topping off your outfit with a chic hat will instantly pull your look together and keep you warm on that trek to class.

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Top It Off

In Southern Cali it takes a while for the harsh sun to fade away as the fall season emerges. As much as we want to put our shorts away and put on our cozy sweaters, it’s still a little too warm out for the drastic wardrobe change. However, by utilizing the right accessories we can transition our way into the new season.

A hat is the perfect approach to capture the spirit of fall. Not only will it protect our face, but it is a practical way to ease your wardrobe into fall. Start by selecting the right material; straw hats are appropriate for summer and woven knits are suited for winter. For fall, wool is the best choice because it offers a soft texture without feeling overbearing in some sunlight. Next choose from an array of styles that suit your personality. Fedoras and swindle hats lean towards an edgy or boho-chic vibe. Emily from Cupcakes and Cashmere paired her wool fedora with a dress and booties. These also pair great with a maxi skirt or jean cut-off shorts. Cloche and floppy hats are also fitting, which are both a bit preppy and girly. This style is complemented by leggings and loose knit sweaters. Sydney from The Daybook looks cool and fresh in her white and chambray ensemble, topped with a wool floppy hat. There’s a fall hat to fit every Fashionista’s personal style.

To all my fellow California Fashionistas and those of you living in sunny climates, don’t let the temperature hinder the fall season. Just embrace it, one styling step at a time.

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Top It Off

If you have ever lived in Texas, you would know that September is a very seasonally-unclear month. It’s that time of the year where seasons are making their transitions, where it’s normal to have heavy rain, extreme sun, then windy and cold in the same day. It’s kind of exciting, this weather. It’s a sign of wardrobe change-up, layering and scarfs. However, it’s also a very fashionably-confusing time for most. Picking out an outfit that’s rain-proof, sun-appropriate, wind-resistant and chic is not easy. Good news is, there are some tips and tricks around it.

Take this Fashionista’s advice of layering your pieces and top it of with a cute hat. Layering is always my favorite part of transition weather, especially in the fall. Layering your outfit is an opportunity to stretch your mixing and matching skills, play with colors and patterns and most importantly, reuse old pieces that you might be thinking of giving away.  Layering is a trend that can help you utilize your closet’s power to the max to create new and fresh looks for the season. This Fashionista is wearing her summer floral romper with a black long cardigan, which is normally worn in the fall. She adds a twist to the outfit by topping it off with a fun hat. Hats are always so dynamic and can freshen up any of your looks. Especially for windy days like these, hats are essentials for girls with long hair that can get rather complicated after a strong wind. So why not choose a fun hat today and go try it on with  your old outfits and see how the magic happen!

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Top It Off

Fashionistas/os, there’s one accessory that should be our best friend all year ‘round. If you couldn't already guess, it’s the hat. What other accessory shades us from the sun’s rays and shelters us from the cold winter winds? They also amp up your look tenfold!

Want to copy this Fashionista’s look? Start by finding a hat in a neutral color to ensure it will look good with multiple outfits. To dress up your look, pair it with a form-fitting skirt or dress; to dress the look down, pair the hat with a basic tank top and high-waist shorts. This Fashionista shared one of her fashion secrets with me — she got her fabulous hat for a steal! Although it looks as if it came straight out of Bergdorf Goodman, she scored it from Target. This isn’t the first time this summer that I’ve been gaga over a hat from Target. Just the other day I was complimenting a Fashionista on the street about her hat, and she also said that hers was from Target.

If you’re not into wide brimmed hats, there are many other options. Fedoras and floppy hats make chic alternatives and they don’t look quite as fancy for everyday wear. Personally, I’ve always been a hat person. It takes a bit of confidence to pull one off because some are definitely attention grabbing. This Fashionista caught my eye the minute I saw her buying coffee. Her striking red ensemble and her shining confidence were the perfect accessories to pair with her statement making hat.

Whatever the season Fashionistas/os, don’t forget to top off your look!

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Top it Off

Fedora-style hats first made their claim to fame back in the 1920s as the iconic male accessory. Women have been spotted sporting this trend in recent years, and this summer, the fedora hat is a staple item for anyone and everyone. Not only is this accessory a perfect way to shield your face from the bright summer rays, but it’s also a great way for us ladies to cover up those not-so-great hair days. This season, fedora hats are showing up in various forms, from wide-brimmed and straw to a classic khaki cut with trim detail. The perfect option is available for everyone. These chic hats are the ideal accessory for any ensemble. Whether you’re donning it with a swimsuit for day at the beach, pairing it with a flowing summer frock or even with an oversized sweater and suitcase while trekking through the airport, this hat is sure to add a little effortless polish to any look.

This Fashionista executes the fedora trend flawlessly. Her lightweight straw option with black trim is great for the summer weather, keeping your head cool and covered. She pairs it with a casual maxi skirt and an airy white blouse to create a chic yet effortless look any bypasser will surely be envious of. Because accessories are key, this Fashionista knew to take her look one step further by personalizing it with layered bracelets and bangles, a watch and a simple ring and necklace.

This summer, be sure to top off your ensemble with something more than the traditional baseball cap, headband or hairpiece. Pick up a straw fedora for an affordable price from either Forever 21 or Urban Outfitters and I guarantee it won’t leave your side all summer long!

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Top It Off

When I hear “fedora” I think Frank Sinatra: classy, cool and dashing. The legend was commonly seen sporting a classic fedora. The trend has continued far after “Old Blue Eyes” and thankfully has become an androgynous look that will never go out of style.

I was sold after first sight of this Fashionista’s headgear. The navy fedora tops off her funky look and transforms her outfit from casual to classy. It’s not always easy to pull off, but the ease of her flowing hair allows for the fedora to sit nicely and to produce an aura of vintage smoothness. Her navy laced, oxford-esque sandals perfectly compliment the hat and round out the outfit from head to toe.

Ladies, don’t be shy to pick up a men’s cap and call it your own. You’ll look every ounce the feminine mystique—in a way that says, “Hey, it’s a woman’s world too.” There’s a couple of hats I may or may not have drooled over. The Gain Fedora by Brixton is a embodies the classic fedora look and offers everything a fedora was made for: fun, a fresh look and feathers. The Saxon-Caribou by Stetson gives a feminine twist on a classy look with the addition of the bow detail around the crown. The straw Swine Stingy Brim Fedora by Christy adds cool color and texture. The Redwood Fedora and the Benjamin Fedora, both by Bailey, add sophisticated color and give life to any outfit.
