STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Trench Coat

I spotted this Fashionisto outside the Indiana Daily Student newsroom dressed in style even though he could have easily used a "late deadline" as an excuse to wear those "comfy college" sweatpants that have been invading the Bloomington campus this fall. On a rainy day, most Fashionistos and Fashionistas want nothing more than to cozy up, but if they must go outside, a trench coat is perfect to avoid those raindrops. For Fashionistos, I like this Carapace belted trench coat because of it's length and it has a removable hood, which always comes in handy! For something lighter, try this Nylon Taffeta rain parka in coffee brown or kelly green. My favorite trench coat I've seen for a male is an olive trench coat on the runway for the Gianfranco Ferre's spring 2011 men's show. The collar and large black buttons give the trench a sassy personality, which would flatter any Fashionisto on campus. Similar in shade and style, Banana Republic offers this classic khaki trench, while J.Crew suggests you wear this caramel classic trench. STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Trench Coats

Sadly, Syracuse winters still aren’t over but this Fashionista managed to channel her winter blues with a cute, blue trench coat. Her look is perfect with leggings and boots (staples in every college girl’s wardrobe), and I absolutely love how the belt cinches in the waist and creates a streamlined silhouette.

Trench coats are perfect as a shield from blustery winds, torrential showers (ahem, Syracuse) and not to mention, are huge this spring. So huge, in fact, that Burberry’s spring 2010 collection was entirely made up of trench coats.

Get Burberry's iconic look for a fraction (a huge fraction) of the price with this tan London Fog trench coat. It's a perfect addition to your wardrobe and it has all the details of a classic trench – double breast, epaulettes and waist belt. It also hits just above the knee, lengthening the legs and creating a slim silhouette.

Banana Republic's trench coat comes at a steeper price but, as a proud owner myself, it is an absolute beauty and well worth the price tag. It has all the classic details but is modernized with dark, contrasting buttons, cuffs, and striped lining.

Trench coats can be easily worn over anything and everything but make sure your outfit hits above the hems of the trench coat, or the silhouette becomes messy. Try the trench over a simple tee, jeans and boots for an easy outfit for class or dress it up with a skirt and sky-high heels à la Burberry.
