STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Updated Classics

Though the beachy backdrop might suggest otherwise, it was a surprisingly chilly fall weekend in Chicago. As the past few weeks have shown, the weather here can change in an instant, leaving even the smartest of Fashionistas unprepared. However, this week’s Fashionista is an exception.

Her outfit is not only a perfect transition look for fall but also gives a modern spin on classic pieces almost everyone owns. A tailored blue oxford shirt, dark wash jeans and tan leather boots are always in style come fall. But instead of making her look solely about the basics, this Fashionista added a red tank top with a slouchy scoop neck, a pretty silver pendant necklace, a sophisticated watch and a cream leather messenger bag. With these added items, she keeps the classic pieces from looking too professional and outdated. This Fashionista leaves us with an outfit that is unexpected and makes an easy statement.

Desperately looking for ways to update your timeless pieces? Try incorporating a key trend from the season. Because you don’t want to lose the classic look altogether, be careful not to overdo the trendy elements. Pick one trend to help your ensemble from looking too one-dimensional. This Fashionista uses the bold red tank top to add variety to her outfit. For something current this fall, try a brown fur vest, like this one from Urban Outfitters. If a fur vest is too intimidating, a simple statement necklace will add character to any outfit without being too overstated. For a trendy alternative to the favorite leather boot, look for a pair of comfortable smoking loafers, like these from Gap.

Although trend-heavy outfits can look very fashion-forward, it's important to keep in mind the longeivity of a piece before you purchase it. Not only are basics very versatile in many seasons, they also act as the perfect counterpart to a daring trend. As this Fashionista shows, classic pieces are definitely worth the investment.

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Updated Classics

A white button-down and black pants is just about the most basic, boring outfit that ever was. There seems to be no particular element of style or creativity involved. It brings nothing more to the table than a few yawns. While this may be true about the most ordinary version of the outfit, take a page from this Fashionista’s book and update the classic combination with interesting details.

I spotted this Fashionista’s vibrant yellow locks from across the street but was drawn to her cool, easy outfit. While she wears a white button down and black pants, her outfit is anything but lackluster. First of all, her white top is perfectly oversized and slightly sheer without showing too much. Two utilitarian pockets decorate the front of the blouse and she delicately rolls up the sleeves in order to carry her chic bags. The detail I love most however is that she buttoned up the shirt to the very last button. The collar trend is huge for this summer. So go ahead, button that last button. Peter Pan collars have popped up on everyone from Alexa Chung to Rachel Bilson — they’re no longer for small children or Wednesday Addams. I also love the necklaces that have been made to look like collars as well, like this Dannijo one.

As we move on down, her black leggings are perhaps my favorite part of the outfit. The slim shape of them balances the oversize white shirt. The detailing is impeccable as well. They remind me of a Balmain motorcycle leather pant, which gives a cool, model-off-duty vibe. The Fashionista finishes off the outfit with all black accessories: the flat gladiator sandals, bangle, pendant necklace, sunnies, and bags.

Even though this Fashionista’s is sporting the classic white shirt and black pant combo, her outfit is anything but ordinary. Pay attention to details and if you’re starved for color, try adding a bright pink lip or some crazy nail art.
