STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Urban Practicality

Finally, finals week is over and summer has officially began. Feel free to breathe a sigh of relief. Whether you are working, taking summer classes, or pursuing an internship like I am, oversized hoodies and basketball shorts are no longer an option. It's time to celebrate the beginning of this beautiful season with new summer styles.

…Or not.

Ah yes, how we love the Midwest and its crazy weather habits. While the forecast may promise a partly cloudy day in the high eighties, what it may fail to mention is the mugginess instilling from the early morning thunderstorm. Summer may be a time for sundresses and brightly colored frocks, but it could also be a time for some rainy day gear.

As we saw at the beginning of the month, rainy day wear doesn't have to be bland and boring, and today's Fashionista exemplifies that. The basis of her look, a khaki trench, gives off an urban Brit vibe. Khaki trench coats are perfect for gloomy days; I love this hooded one by Michael Kors. But what is perfect about this Fashionista's ensemble is that she doesn't just embrace neutrals (a khaki jacket, black flats, and denim skinny jeans), but she brightens up the scheme with a gorgeous colorful scarf and a spirited yellow tote. Lightweight, gauzy summer scarves are the perfect accessory to add to an otherwise neutral look. A variety of stores are carrying lightweight scarves this season, from Topshop to American Eagle to my personal favorite- Anthropologie
