STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Vintage Varsity

Looking into the future, a lot of times fashion will look back to the past for inspiration. There has definitely been a trend of 1950s-style clothing appearing on shelves in stores recently, and one of my personal favorite items has been the faux-vintage varsity-style jacket.

This week’s Fashionisto is a great example of what a cool jacket can add to your ensemble. The unexpected mix of blue and brown colors is great and can be thrown on top of any shirt. The coat of arms emblem patch is a fun pop of personality. This particular jacket also has leather zipper pulls- again adding interesting detail to the coat. The mismatched plaid and casual sneakers makes for an easy, casual on-the-go look.

The absolute greatest part about these jackets is that they are appropriate for males and females – anyone can wear them. Of course, the utilitarian value of warmth isn’t something we can forget about either- perfect for winter. To translate this look for ladies, try this varsity jacket from Urban Outfitters. It is to die for – the maroon color is divine! Throw it over this plaid button-up shirt and pair with these classic destroyed, denim shorts. Match with a pair of canvas sneakers, and you’ve got a great vintage-inspired look!

Hint: These stylish outerwear pieces are certainly in many stores. However, for those of you who want the real thing, shopping at thrift stores or consignment shops are the place to go. Also, don’t be afraid to ask Mom and Dad for their old jackets from back in the day.
