STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Who Wears Short Shorts?

Growing up I was lucky enough to spend the summer months away at my cottage listening to music by bands like The Beach Boys and The Royal Teens. Whenever I hear some of their classic tunes I’m always left with memories of swimming in the lake and the sun. Along with such memories come images of a carefree, natural, everyday style that’s often centered around a perfect pair of casual jean shorts.

While I love that my workplace wardrobe gives me the chance to play grown-up and feel sophisticated for a while, there really is nothing better than a pair of itty-bitty jean shorts to spice things up a little. The shorter hemline makes for a sexy, yet refined look that lets you feel like a million bucks and adds a little more fun to your day. These street chic shorts have been around for decades and come in a variety of styles, making it almost certain you’ll be able to find a pair that perfectly hugs yours hips and forms to your shape.

Today’s Fashionista mixed her pair of American Eagle dark-wash jean shorts with a fun cheetah print tank, letting her personality shine through while beating the heat for the perfect Saturday afternoon outfit. You can simulate her look by finding similar pieces at H&M for a student-friendly budget. However, if you’re interesting in putting a twist on a classic jean short, check out American Apparel's high-waist version or Urban Outfitters' studded variety. Feel free to experiment with a variety of blouses, tanks and accessories to see how jean shorts can easily transform from a day to night look.

Just like today’s Fashionista, celebrities such as Vanessa Hudgens have been recently spotted mixing personal style with jean shorts at the popular music festival Coachella. Likewise, many other young Fashionistas adapted the fashion craze at other musical festivals making them a staple at events such as Bonnaroo and Lolapaloza. Take a look at Glamour magazine's list of Dos and Don’ts for wearing itty-bitty jean shorts to make sure you’ll be style ready to rock the summer classic, whether it be on the streets or the next big concert.

While they may not be workplace appropriate, jean shorts are certainly weekend approved, allowing you to embrace the summer breeze wherever these few months many take you. And hey, they give you a chance to show off a little more leg than you may be used too and finally reveal that great tan you’ve been working so hard for!

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Who Wears Short Shorts?

We’ve entered the month of July and Florida’s weather is as unpredictable as ever, but the one thing that continues to be consistent is the unbearable humidity and heat. It’s become nearly impossible to avoid breaking a sweat while doing even the simplest outdoor task.

In my opinion, the best way to keep cool is to keep your look simple and versatile. This week’s Fashionista is a prime example of how to keep cool by baring her stems and wearing a flattering pair of black shorts. She maintains a modest look by pairing the shorts with a collared denim shirt and long cream cardigan. She accessorizes with a simple gold necklace. She completes the look with my two favorite parts of her ensemble, her tribal patterned flats and her purple dip dye hair.

If you haven’t noticed a reoccurring theme this summer, it’s the awesome (and daring) candy colored hair almost every featured Fashionista/o from Flagler has been rocking. If these individuals have encouraged you to finally take the plunge, I will once again recommend you use Manic Panic to color your locks. If you want a more temporary option, many beauty supply stores now offer colored hair chalk that will wash out in a single shampoo.

If you’d like to replicate this Fashionista’s look, pair a collared shirt with a pair of high-rise shorts. Instead of wearing denim on denim, keep your look breathable and comfortable by choosing a collared shirt that is a lighter fabric, like chambray or chiffon. Even better, pick a top with some trendy cutouts!

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Who Wears Short Shorts??

Jean shorts are a piece of style that will never fade (depending on the wash), and never get old (depending on the brand). A real Fashionista goes against the norm by all means when it comes to jean shorts. High waist and distressed jean shorts are a must this summer. You can do so much with the different styles, colors, prints, and detailing of jeans shorts today more than ever. This Fashionista has placed an oversized floral top with a pair of distressed denim shorts, sandals, and to add a touch of chic her bumblebee sunglasses. This look is classic, simple, and perfect for a hot day on the yard. Jean shorts can be played safe or done to the max with the right top and shoes.

Playing it safe, I would advise my Fashionistas to add simple T-shirt, crop top, or crew neck with a pair of high-wasted or distressed jean shorts, and a pair of booties or sandals. Be sure to accessorize your simple outfits more than the over the top ones it brings out the simplest pieces to look as if you actually are dressed up.

Jean shorts can also be dressed up with a floral top, blazer, or even a leather jacket, adding a pair of clog heels or boots to top it off and playing it easy with the accessories unless your dressed up style is still quite simple. Next time your shopping grab a few pairs of shorts from thrift stores, cut them up and design them to make them fit your style and your look for this summer.

Jeans shorts are in style, how will you style in them?

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Who Wears Short Shorts?

On my recent jaunt to Europe, aside from all the breathtaking sightseeing and macaroon eating, I was hitting the streets trying to really immerse myself in the European fashion scene. Running both CollegeFashionista.com and CollegeFashionista.co.uk I love comparing the similarities and differences between college students around the world. I got to observe the differences firsthand when on my trip.

A major trend that seems to fill the streets of London is short shorts and tights. Our lovely Style Guru Sophie donned a pair at our Juicy Couture event, as did today's Fashionista. While this trend can't be worn by everyone, those select few who can actually pull it off look brilliant.

Take today's Fashionista. Her look would have been very leggy if she had gone sans tights. But with the extra warmth and polished feel of tights, the focus of her outfit wasn't all about her legs. The Fashionista allowed the blue of her denim to steal the show and kept the rest of her outfit to basic blacks.

Hint: If you are feeling confident enough to rock this look then give it a whirl. I would recommend going for a pair of fitted denim, like these from Madewell, when trying to imitate this trend. Oversized shorts with tights just won't give that same effect. This is the one case where I say tight on tight works just right.
