STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Wild Thing

Even among a sea of purple and orange, this Fashionsta stood out on game day in Clemson, which is not an easy feat. Wearing an on-trend high-low dress in a purple and orange leopard print, she rocked her game day look. Keeping the rest of her outfit simple with strappy sandals and minimal jewelery, she allowed the colorful print to make a bold statement on its own.

This season animal inspired attire is everywhere. While leopard and zebra print have been in our closets for a while now, this season it’s all about putting a new twist on your animal prints. Follow this Fashionista’s lead and try an animal print in bold unexpected colors. Or try one of your favorite wardrobe pieces in a bold print, like an animal print blazer or leopard print smoker's shoes. In addition to the animal prints we know and love, designers are also introducing a new type of animal inspired fashion, where the animals themselves make the print. This graphic T-shirt from Forever 21 would look great tucked into high-waist shorts or jeans and topped with a blazer. To some, these prints can seem a little too bold, but it's all about what you pair it with. This graphic sweater from H&M would look awesome paired with a leather motorcycle jacket or leather pencil skirt. There is also a ton of animal inspired jewelry on the runway and in stores, like this jungle cat necklace and snake cuff, both from NASTY GAL. These fun pieces would be the perfect finishing touch to an outfit in need of a little excitement. The most important advice for unleashing your wild side this season is to do it all with confidence!

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Wild Thing

Every Fashionista/o should be adventurous — an adventurous shopper that is. From zebra nail designs to cheetah Sperry Top-Siders, there's no doubt that animal prints are making their way into our day-to-day wardrobe. Forget the days you associated animal prints strictly with safaris and Snooki. This summer, dare to stand out.

The key to animal prints goes back to the textbook rule of thumb: “less is more.” By adding a simple, classy twist to any animal print look, you avoid looking cheap or overdone. This Fashionista wears cheetah print perfectly. With a carefully selected pair of print jeans and high cut purple chiffon top, the outfit is simple yet bold. By mixing prints with her polka dot T-shirt under her chiffon top, she keeps her outfit interesting. But notice the polka dots are small and subtle so the focus remains on her jeans. Her suede dress shoes with matching purple shoelaces are my favorite part of the outfit — I love matching subtleties! If you're looking for something less bold than this Fashionista, try pairing an animal print top with a tailored, colored bottom and a pair of heels. For a more casual look, pair the shirt with a pair of jeans with studded or embellished flats.

For large articles of clothing (dresses, skirts, jeans, etc), choose small or medium sized designs to prevent your outfit from looking disproportional. For accessories and clothes with a smaller surface area (I love animal print headbands and wedges!), try larger sized prints to make them stand out. Like they say, half the fun is getting there.

If you decide to invest in animal prints this summer, shop around. Don't settle — if you nail an outfit like this, it will be unforgettable.

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Wild Thing

As a fellow college student, I understand that although us aspiring Fashionistas enjoy treating the campus hallways as a runway to showcase our individual style, there are also the days when countless hours studying or participating in group projects can cause an overwhelming drag on our fashion sense. It is unfortunate because at times like these our outfits have dropped the list of priorities for the day and we find “dressing fashionable” at the very bottom.

When this occurrence is the matter at hand, our wardrobe tends to consist of nothing but tee shirts and our favorite comfy oversized sweater. However readers, there is a quick and simple way to add some embellishment to our otherwise too casual outfit that makes sure your fashion sense doesn’t get flattened out by the stack of books and homework on your desks. Pay attention to this week’s Fashionista and try mixing in an eye-catching pair of leggings similar to the leopard printed ones that she is sporting!

Leggings are a staple in every female’s wardrobe and undoubtedly the choice bottom when picking out a care free and comfortable outfit. Be that as it may, put down the boring blacks and dull denims next time you dress for comfort and do yourself a favor and invest in a wild pair of leggings—any sort of print at all!

If you’re feeling catty and feline friendly, try donning the Valentina by Rock & Republic. Want to showcase your preppy side and how studious you are? Visit American Apparel for their Baby Thermal Plaid Legging. Or go with my personal favorite and add some floral shine with the ASOS Floral Leggings.

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Wild Thing

Shakira had it right when she emoted: “there’s a she wolf in your closet, let it out so it can breath.” There is an inner animal in everyone, so show it off through your summer apparel! Although my extreme love for animal prints is significantly greater than the average person, I would safely suggest highlighting your outfit with a touch of animal (and not cover your whole body in it, as I would love to do if it did not look ridiculous). Choosing an accessory to express your favorite print such as a handbag, belt, or scarf, as this Fashionista did, aptly illustrates your wild side without looking as if you belong on Animal Planet. This Fashionista decided to boost her ferociousness by draping a thin leopard scarf over her graphic tee. While layering prints can look busy and be very dangerous, it can be successfully executed by paying close attention to the size and color of the prints. As shown above, the dark graphics on her T-shirt are less prominent against the bright golden color of the leopard. With size of print, it is best to pair a small print with a larger one, like this Fashionista did: the small leopard spots on the scarf complement the extensive pattern on the tee. Her dark, solid shorts on bottom balance out the prints on top, with white flip-flops lightening the overall color palate and rounding out her summer look.

To dress on the wild side like this Fashionista, you can find a cheetah scarf at Echos, graphic tee at Urban Outfitters, neutral Free People cargo shorts at Piperlime, and complete your look simple Havianas sandals.
