I’m so excited to be writing my first post for CollegeFashionista, especially with such a great team supporting me as a new style guru. Everywhere I look, I see Fashionistas/os who I’m dying to capture an image of to blog about. Here at UCLA, we are beginning the end of the school year with our favorite of all quarters: spring quarter! Though it brings new academic challenges, spring is the absolute best quarter, with perfect L.A. weather and so many great events to look forward to, including Coachella, Jazz Reggae Fest, Spring Sing, FAST club’s annual Fashion Show, the Dalai Lama speaking and the list could go on and on.
With so much on our calendars, I want to spotlight a trend that is very versatile and therefore perfect for any of these or other occasions, one that I’ve been seeing a lot of in fashion magazines and blogs: the wedge shoe. Today’s Fashionista is sporting such wedges and has paired them with some skinny jeans and a grey three-quarter length shirt. Seeing her reminded me of a outfit I absolutely adored of Ashley Olsen’s. Both Fashionistas' minimalistic styles accentuate the platform wedge as the staple of their outfits. However, wedges can also be worn with flowing dresses, shorts, wide-legged pants, jeggings and really any other bottoms. Platform wedges are much more comfortable than other high-heeled shoes, so you can use them day or night, and whether you’re aiming to look casual or dressy.
Hint: Wedges can be found with high or low heels, and either colorful or plain. No matter how they’re made, I highly recommend looking to buy a pair of your own. Urbanoutfitters.com has some amazing new ones that I am extremely tempted to purchase for my own closet, including low mini-wedge sandals, high red platform wedges, as well as some that are closed toed (and most likely useful for next fall and winter as well!). These Dolce Vitas are on my most wanted list, but if you’ve fallen in love with today’s Fashionista’s pair, Nordstrom offers some in a neutral color that are slightly similar and easy to match with any outfit. White is really in, especially after Dolce and Gabbana’s beautiful spring 2011 Ready-to-Wear Collection, so Jeffrey Campbell’s "Alexa" would be a great addition to any wardrobe. Feel free to experiment, but match your new wedges with clothes that fit your body and personal style!
