Style Guru Bio: Jacqueline Gutierrez

Like a front row seat at your favorite band’s concert, like a hot dog on the Fourth of July, like dipping your feet into the sea–it’s often the simple things that bring happiness into our lives. For me, finding a pair of vintage heels at a thrift shop is one of those things. Clothes, shoes, and accessories have never been an obsession of mine. Rather, fashion has always been a strong interest. The people and the outfits are what have me constantly questioning: Why? In society we tie roles with outfits. Uniforms make a particular group easily recognizable. Outfits, most importantly, make individuals just that: an individual. I believe fashion is both subjective and objective. It’s personal yet always open for criticism. While culture and lifestyle influence fashion, our constant need to advance makes fashion that much more innovating.

As someone who enjoys spontaneity, I like knowing the trend of tomorrow is simply a mystery just like any day’s events. But just as I’ve learned home really never changes, there are certain pieces in my daily wardrobe that hold constant: a pair of big brown sunglasses, a bow as a hair piece, and an owl charm. The books I read, films I watch, and destinations I discover have strong influences in my taste of clothing. I turn to magazines such as Vogue, Nylon, Glamour, and Harper’s Bazaar for inspiration and knowledge on what’s going on in the world of fashion. I’m not a believer in bashing the outfits of others but rather celebrating their bold originality.

My fashion icon is the late Jacqueline Onassis. What I admire most is that she was a woman of class and intellect. One of my all-time favorite designer’s is the “King of Cool”, Marc Jacobs. His work never lets me down and continues to please me. The words of the legendary Karl Lagerfeld inspire me. As Lagerfeld once wrote, “Fashion does not have to prove that it is serious. It is the proof that intelligent frivolity can be something creative and positive.”

I am thrilled for the spring semester of CollegeFashionista. As I begin my second term as a Style Guru, I am excited to bring you spotlights on the many Sun Devil Fashionistas/os. Spring is certainly a time for unique patterns, vibrant colors, and trends of all sorts. There is no telling what we’ll discover on the runways of our campus. I hope that you will accompany me through the journey.
