I’m Joscelyne, one of University of Arizona’s summer Style Gurus.
I have several hobbies such as oil painting, drawing and reading, but people-watching is one of my favorite things to do when I’m on campus. You know what I’m talking about … finding a spot to sit and sip on your coffee while you stare at people that walk by. Doing so has helped me understand that fashion is not only about one certain style but many distinct ones. Observing others and finding out what they like to wear prevents me from becoming close-minded in regards to fashion. People-watching is a way to learn from others without them even noticing.
I used to think that being “fashionable” meant to look fancy all the time. One of the things that I have learned from observing others is that simplicity and comfort are the keys to a perfect outfit. Juicy Couture, being a contemporary casual-wear brand is the perfect example of simple and comfortable, glamorous wear.
If there is something that I love more than high heels and silky scarfs (not including family/friends, of course), it has to be animals. My love for animals is part of my style. I have promised myself to never be seen wearing animal skins. Faux fur > real fur. I don’t go crazy over people that do though. Everyone is free to wear what they want- that’s what fashion is about!
So what exactly is fashion? My favorite fashion quote couldn’t have explained it better: “Fashion is not something that exists in dresses only. Fashion is in the sky, in the street, fashion has to do with ideas, the way we live, what is happening,” originally said by Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel, one of the most inspirational and influential women of all times in the world of fashion. When people think of fashion, they automatically think of clothes, shoes, and accessories. But to many, fashion is much more than that. It is a way of life, a reason to live, a religion, beauty to the eyes, art… There can’t be a fixed definition for fashion as it means different things to different people. To me, fashion is something to look up to every day, something that can turn blue and gloomy days around… It is simply a way of expressing oneself.
