To kick off March we are spotlighting one of our talented and ambitious Style Gurus, Nicole Moutis from American University. What I love about Nicole's work is it's very unpredictable in the best sense of the word. One week she will showcase a rocker-chic Fashionista decked out in leather; while the next week she will capture a couple of friends playing up the preppy look. Whatever inspires Nicole that week comes across in her work. Enjoy my Q&A with Nicole and, if you aren't already, follow her on Twitter @nmoutis.
CollegeFashionista: How does fashion play a key role in your daily life?
Nicole Moutis: Throughout the day when I tend to get a little bored in my classes my mind wanders to a imaginative world filled with a plethora of colors and patterns with all sorts of designers from Valentino to Alice and Olivia and I assemble together these marvelous outfits inside of my head hoping that one day this will become my reality.
CF: What is the biggest reward of being a Style Guru for CollegeFashionista?
NM: The biggest reward would be that I go out everyday doing something I absolutely love to do. It gives me a nice break from the daily schedule of going from a full day of classes to all day babysitting hours to late night library sessions. Also, being a Style Guru has opened up so many unexpected doors of opportunities that I can not be more than thankful for!
CF: Number one trend seen around campus at American University?
NM: Since I started this winter, I would have to say I have seen a lot of hunter boots, combat boots, fur whether as a jacket or a hat and the undeniable skinny dark high waisted jegging.
CF: Who do you prefer shooting Fashionistas or Fashionistos?
NM: Here at American University, the girls out number the guys from a 60 to 40 ratio so I always get excited when I find a stunning Fashionisto to feature. But that does not take away from the fact that I get even more excited when I find a fellow Fashionista who starts a trend around campus or gives me inspiration for my wardrobe!
CF: If you could only have one article of clothing, what would it be?
NM: A pair of converse. No matter what the season or the reason I will throw these pair of shoes on with almost every outfit because in my opinion, comfort is a significant factor that should be considered within every outfit. Oh, and of course converse can be stylish as well.
CF: What/Who influences you style?
NM: The Satorialist. Facehunter. Sea of Shoes. Fashion Toast. Cupcakes and Cashmere. Stardust and Sequins. Just to name a few of the blogs I visit daily but I also pick up the monthly issue of Vogue, Marie Claire, Nylon and Instyle that I also find many of my fashion inspirations from. But my favorite hobby that influences my style the most would have to be people watching. Just walking down the streets or walking through campus I love to see what other people are wearing because to me, fashion is so much more than the clothes you choose to wear.
CF: Favorite feature on CollegeFashionista so far?
NM: This is a tough one. I would have to say my latest fashion obsession would be knee highs with a combat boot therefore, I absolutely loved the recent post STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Americana. I am also a fan of pretty much every fashion abroad post because for some reason as Americans we seem to be a bit behind on fashion whereas a lot of fashion abroad (Europe specifically) will become inspirations for most American Fashionistas!
