5 Ways to Rock Denim Jackets and Jeans this Fall

Denim is such a tried and true fashion trend that I genuinely believe it will never go out of style. However, denim is constantly evolving. Because of the constant evolution of denim, Fashionistas are always finding new ways to rock denim jackets and denim jeans. Here are five innovative ways that you can rock denim on your campus this fall.

1—Denim on denim. While denim on denim was once considered a fashion sin, denim on denim is now considered trendy. The rise of denim on denim is primarily because of the other various trends from the 1990s that are making a comeback! When wearing denim on denim, it is best to wear two different shades of denim. For example, wearing a light wash jean jacket with dark wash denim jeans. By wearing two shades of denim, you can create a trendy two-toned look.

2—Patterned denim. If you want to add a little flair to your denim, patterned denim is the way to go! Patterned denim has been popping up at a variety of stores. One way to wear patterned denim is to wear a denim jacket with a floral pattern. This look combines two major trends, floral and denim, for a cool and casual vibe.

3—Fringed denim. While distressed denim will never go out of style, one of the latest denim trends I have noticed is fringed denim. This trend involves denim jeans or a jacket that is fringed at the edges. This trend first became popular in Spain, but it has made its way to the United States. Fringed denim jeans with a pair of heels are the perfect look for a fall day.

4—Patched denim. A new street style trend that I have noticed this fall is patched denim. This fresh look adds different patches to a regular pair of denim pants. A pair of patched denim jeans and a cool band T-shirt would create a hipster look for a chill day on campus.

The 3 Best Vintage Shops on Depop

While buying a brand new piece right off the rack can be a thrill, the only place to buy truly one-of-a-kind gems is from a thrift store. Thrift shopping has become more popular in recent years especially in large cities like New York City, where the thrift stores are abundant in location and the clothes are plentiful. However, for those of us that live in smaller areas of the country, our options are more limited (so limited that the only option is Goodwill), but that does not mean we have to miss out on some totally rad vintage wear.

Depop is a great app for finding vintage pieces from the comfort of your own home—or wherever you and your phone may be. Goodbye to endless hours digging through the racks at consignment shops and thrift stores; hello to easy scrolling and boxes delivered right to your door. New to Depop? Check out some of the best vintage shops on Depop below to get started on your online vintage shopping spree.

Sabrina Chantel’s vintage shop (@sabrinachantel on Depop) is a ’90s wonderland filled with delicate embroidery and headbanging band T-shirts. What makes this shop extra special is that Sabrina has hand-painted designs on some of her pieces, making them even more unique.

How to Shop Vintage Like a Pro

When shopping for all things vintage, I like to ask myself three questions: Will I actually wear this? Can I turn this into something else? Is it worth the price? If I answer yes to at least two of these questions, I’m sold! It can be a little difficult to find great vintage clothing with all of the fast fashion retailers that dominate our millennial culture. However, there are still many people who enjoy a great hand-me-down for a steal.

Living in New York City gives me a wonderful advantage because of its large variety of vintage stores, many of which can be found in Williamsburg in the lower parts of Manhattan, and for the more upscale piece, the upper west side. A few of my favorites are Buffalo Exchange and Crossroads Trading Co.

Another great thing about shopping vintage is that you can sell what you no longer wear and use the credit to get new pieces. Granted, you’re not going to get back what you purchased for it, but it’s better than nothing. One of my favorite finds came from Buffalo Exchange. It was a faux, off-gray sheepskin vest, and as soon as I saw it I fell in love, and for $8 I couldn’t say no. I try to make a trip every season to a few of the stores to recycle my old pieces and grab some fresh ones.

Let me impart some of my wisdom for shopping at vintage stores from one Fashionista to another. First, always bring an extra bag. You know—those cute canvas tote bags in the back of your closet. Second, look to see what the market is looking for. If you are going to sell your clothes, see what the store is buying so that you can maximize your profit. Finally, have fun! Look at new styles. You might surprise yourself and find something you love.

This Fashionista is rocking her amazing, pink hair and her outfit is 100 percent vintage. She got all her pieces from different stores around the city. I personally love the denim-on-denim look with pops of color. Pairing a great button-down shirt with a pair of jeans or cut-offs and chunky shoes can be the perfect summer outfit. The best thing about denim is that it can be dressed up or down. Leaving the shirt open gives a more casual, relaxed look. Having it buttoned and tucked can give a more put-together look.

Okay Fashionistas and Fashionistos, I have given you some tips and my favorite stores. Now it’s your turn! What are some of your favorite places to shop vintage? Comment below!

Pretty in Pink: Summer Trend Edition

Woohoo, summer is here! Let the beach days and summer tans begin! Where I live, the temperatures can get pretty miserable. But besides those sweltering days, there are so many reasons to love summer.

1. Sunny days and clear skies mean perfect lighting for Instagram pictures.

2. More time to catch up with old high school friends now that school’s out.

3. Farmers’ markets and fresh fruit. (Seriously, I could eat watermelon for breakfast, lunch, and dinner).

4. It’s always an appropriate time to eat ice cream.

5. Summer fashion trends!

Out of all the seasons, it’s the easiest to spot fashion trends during the summer. Once those temperatures get above 70 degrees, I get excited to see what cute styles are going to be trending this season. Last year, it was cut-off shorts and Adidas superstars, and this year it’s all about the bell sleeves and cold shoulders.

The Look:

I’ll be honest, I’ve been in a bit of a fashion rut lately, but everything changed when I saw this shirt. The pastel pink color screamed summer, and the breathable cotton material keeps me cool. I love that I can still rock long sleeves in the summer. This shirt took those trending bell sleeves and turned them up a notch, making them fuller and sweeter. It’s an eye-catching design that is sugar sweet. Although the top is definitely a statement piece, the soft color makes it easy to pair with any bottom.

This time, I kept my bottoms simple with a denim mini skirt. Another trend that popped up in the fall and is continuing into the summer are funky patches on denim. I’ve seen all sorts of wacky designs pinned on jeans, jackets, and anything denim. This small detailing gives off an ’80s vibe, and makes otherwise boring garments super fresh.

My favorite trend of the summer so far has got to be strappy, chunky sandals that come in every shade of suede. Although I haven’t gotten my hands on the perfect pair yet, I’m glad that wearing booties in the summer is still acceptable. So until I find my dream summer shoe, these chunky booties will have to do.

My accessories echo the ’80s vibe of my skirt’s detailing. These metal aviators and gold hoops were inspired by the “baddie” look on Instagram, but the pink rims makes them unique and adorable.

I’m ready to take on summer feelin’ pretty in pink. What’s your favorite summer trend so far, and what new trend are you going to try out? Let me know in the comments below!

These 1980s Sneakers Are Making a Big Comeback

There’s no denying that in the past few years, classic, white high top Converse and iconic Adidas Superstar Sneakers have been majorly trending shoes. These are two examples of shoe styles that are not only super cut, but also versatile, ones that have been sensationally popular for college students. However, these staples may have to make way for a new functional yet fashionable shoe that could soon take over closets everywhere. The funny thing is that this shoe brand, Tretorn, isn’t exactly new. They’ve been around the block way more times than either Converse or Adidas.

Tretorn is a Swedish company established in 1891, the year it started making rubber galoshes. The quality company had long, enduring success making different types of shoes. However, the 1980 bestseller fashion book, The Preppy Handbook, cemented Tretorn’s place in the fashion world with the inclusion of the company’s classic style, the Nylite. The Nylite became a staple for all 1980s Fashionistas and hardcore tennis players alike.

So, where can you get them? Although I got lucky with my Tretorn inheritance (my stylish mom kept her original 1980s pairs in pristine condition for me to steal from her), you can purchase the shoes directly from Tretorn. Also, über stylish brands carry Tretorn shoes, including J.Crew and Anthropologie. The sneakers are super comfortable and versatile. They are perfect to throw on with some denim shorts or dress down an embellished off-the-shoulder top and white jeans. And the best part is… no socks necessary! Tretorn shoes can be worn all day long with zero socks and zero blisters—definitely a win!

Although Tretorn was made famous for its preppy flair, if you’re not the preppy type, don’t fret! Tretorn has expanded its portfolio today to include funky metallic straps, silky satin sneakers, and perforated platforms. The brand is also celebrating 50 years of the iconic Nylite style. To include followers in this celebration, Tretorn has invited Instagram users to personalize their crisp, white Nylites and tag them using the hashtag #Nylite50. So if you’re the artistic type, grab your paintbrush and a fresh pair of Nylites, and get creating!

You’re probably wondering, “If Tretorn shoes were so popular in the 1980s, why have I never heard of them?” Perhaps the grunge phase in the ’90s booted out the popular shoe for that decade. However, they are much more than just a preppy tennis staple. Today, the stylish shoes are back and better than ever.

4 Ways to Wear Denim-On-Denim for the Summer

Denim-on-denim is scary. Many people think that the ’80s ruined it for everyone, but just because some think that denim-on-denim doesn’t work, doesn’t mean we shouldn’t do it. When Justin Timberlake and Britney Spears went out to the American Music Awards with their memorable all-denim outfits, they didn’t let their fear of denim-on-denim effect them and neither should it affect you. Now you don’t have to go to the same extreme as Justin and Britney. Here are four simple ways to let denim-on-denim back into your life.

1—Same tone denim. No one can ever go wrong with a denim cropped jacket and a pair of statement jeans. When you do the same tone of denim, it is fun to add in colors. White is an eye-catching color to add with same tone denim. It keeps it chic without being too overwhelming for the eye.

2—Two tone denim. 2017 is the time of statement denim, whether it be your pant or your jacket. Wearing a single tone denim jacket with a contrasting denim pant is not a crime, but actually a quick, cute outfit to go on adventures in. I personally am a fan of pairing dark denim with a lighter denim piece. This gives your outfit texture without looking too monotone.

3—Denim accessories. I am obsessed with denim accessories. A denim choker with a denim jacket will complete any outfit. Denim accessories are fun because they don’t have to match the tone of another piece of denim. They add another dimension to your outfit that makes a statement.

4—As a coverup. Wearing a denim skirt along with a denim jacket as you are going to the beach can make your quick beach trip into a day out while still looking chic. It is also nice if you are not too comfortable with the denim-on-denim look because you can take it off while at the beach. Wearing a simple one-piece suit will bring your outfit completely together.

Have fun with creating your own take on how to wear denim-on-denim this summer. All trends need your own personal spin on it, and we want to see yours.

Wearing Your Dad’s Old Clothes is Pretty Much The Best Father’s Day Gift Ever

Father’s Day is all about showing some appreciation for our fathers and all that they have given us—sometimes that even includes clothing. Many of my personal favorite pieces were snatched from not just my mom’s closet, but my dad’s, too. Not all dad clothes are slacks and cargo shorts. My dad has some really amazing, heavy knit sweaters (they’re mine now, sorry, dad!) that are perfect for brisk fall days; not to mention a killer collection of ‘80s band T-shirts.

So, while it is certainly important to celebrate and appreciate our dads on Father’s Day, we should probably appreciate their closets, too. (Bonus points if he doesn’t mind that you indefinitely borrow his clothes). In honor of Father’s Day this coming Sunday, these #rad Style Gurus took to their father’s closets to put together some hot vintage looks.

“My dad isn’t the most fashionable guy out there, so I checked out my boyfriend’s dad’s closet and JACKPOT. I scored a vintage Arizona Jean Co. denim jacket. The quality of it is amazing. I wanted to put my own spin on the vintage look and applied some patches on it. I totally revived the piece, but still keeping the vintage feel to the jacket.” – Style Guru Samantha Neira

“This look is called the ‘I stole the vintage pieces from my dad’s closet,’ which includes the oversize Levi’s denim jacket purchased in San Francisco at the Levi’s Store 25 years ago, as well as the Hard Rock Cafe Chicago T-shirt. Old pieces like these are fun to wear because some people buy them for outrageous amounts, when in reality they may already have some of these pieces in their dad’s closet.” – Style Guru Gabrielle O’Donnell
