How to Make the Most Out of Your Beach Day

As soon as August 1 greets us, we are hit with the stunning realization that summer is approaching its end. With just a matter of weeks left until we return to the daily grind of classes and responsibility, we find ourselves desperately reaching out to grab onto any last bit of summer we can.

My personal way of dealing with this is by spending countless hours at the beach. There is no better way to soak up the last days of summer than with the sound of the ocean and the feeling of warm sand on your feet. There are a few simple ways to get the most out of your beach day, and the most out of what’s left of your summer.

1—Create the perfect playlist. Indie, EDM, country—it doesn’t matter what your taste is. Music can completely change the vibe of your beach day. I know that when I have a good playlist on the beach, I could sit there forever and ever just listening. Make sure you have plenty of songs and a great speaker!

2—Find a great bathing suit. Bathing suit shopping can be one of the most fun parts about summer; there are so many different styles for different people! It’s a great way to express your personality, whether you are retro, boho, or minimalistic. For the beach, I like to find simple one-pieces that will withstand the force of the waves and keep me comfortable.

3—Bring a book. Since the school year is such a busy time, it’s extremely difficult to find time to read for pleasure. The beach is the perfect place to do that. You can re-read an old favorite like Harry Potter, or take the time to read a career advice book; the possibilities are endless. Grab the perfect book (or multiple books, if you’re like me and fly through them), stick it in your beach bag, and go!

4—Wear a breezy cover-up. For a beach day, a flowy dress or coverup is very important. It’s best to have something easy to pull on and off throughout the day and something that is light and airy in the heat. A simple spaghetti strap dress will work perfectly all day long, from the time you first arrive in the morning to the evening sunset.

There are still so many things that can be done at the beach, which is why it is one of the best ways to spend your August days. If you can make the most of your beach days, maybe you can make the end of summer worthwhile before the days start getting cooler and shorter.

Taking Every Opportunity

If I could sum up everything that I’ve learned throughout my three years of college so far in one word, it would be opportunity. Many colleges and universities have a copious amount of opportunities that many students never even find out about during their, hopefully, four years there. From resume building to internship opportunities, to leadership opportunities and clubs, to traveling and studying abroad, the opportunities are endless. Although I would suggest to take up every single opportunity that you can get while you are in school, I would 500 percent recommend that if your college has the opportunity to study abroad or go on a study abroad trip, go!

A couple months ago I was able to attend an amazing study abroad trip to Spain, France, and Italy. It was only about a week and a half, but the memories and the relationships that were created are priceless. Although there were many, and I mean many, highlights to this trip I thought it would be fun to share three of my favorite places I went while I was in Spain, France, and Italy.

1—The Trevi Fountain. If you ever find yourself in Rome, this is one thing you can not miss. Although it is packed with tourists, it is still one of the most mesmerizing and beautiful fountains you will ever see, not to mention the Lizzie McGuire street cred. Traveling fashion tip: jumpsuits are a great traveling outfit, always wear comfortable sandals, and never forget your sunglasses!

2—Portovenere, Italy. One word to describe this view-wow. Sitting and looking out at the view makes you feel so small and reminds you how incredibly big this world is.

3—Arles, France. This little town is located in the south of France and is known to be the town where Vincent Van Gough used to live. A little café in this town had the best panini that I’ve ever had in my life and a number of places for photo ops are amazing. Between the colorful buildings and the greenery growing around the buildings, it was one of the most beautiful small cities I’ve been to.

Although there are many more places that I fell in love with while I was in Europe, these three are some that left the largest impression. So if your university has the opportunity for you to travel or study abroad I would highly recommend taking that step and going! The memories and the relationships you make will last a lifetime and it’s a great way to find out a little more about yourself! One last travel tip: if you ever find yourself in Italy, never turn down a scoop of gelato!

How to Channel Basic Bohemian Summer Vibes

In the summer, it’s important to have some quick go-to styles that are easy to pull off. My biggest pet peeve is being too hot in my clothes when I’m out and about in the summer. When shopping, I tend to look for textures and materials that are lightweight and clothes that are easy to throw on and take off. I can wear these bohemian styles on a summer night out or a relaxing night in. Together these two outfits highlight the easy-going but versatile way to style your clothes by staying cool and comfy.

Textured jeans are quick to throw on and add some bohemian vibes to any outfit. I normally stay away from jeans in the summer, but these are form fitting in a way that isn’t skin tight. The color blocking on the pant legs is also a refreshing element that makes you look super trendy. Paired with a simple flowy top, these jeans are sure to make you stand out. I also tied the shirt up to give it a fun and flirty vibe. Throw on some summery canvas shoes, and you’re ready to go!

This second look is great for any occasion: a lunch by the beach, casual cocktails with your girls, or a lounge day. These linen pants can be dressed up or dressed down. Pair them with a cute pair of sandals to achieve this easy look. While it doesn’t have any particularly busy colors or textures, this look is flattering on anyone and easy to accessorize according to your style.

Each of these looks is fun and easy to wear all summer long. I know my wardrobe is full of easy-to-wear basics that can create looks like these to keep me cool and fashionable this summer!

Dressing for a Casual Night With the Girls

It seems pretty crazy to admit that August is already here. I always find this month to go by the fastest because it means that summer is coming to an end, and school is approaching us soon. My inspiration with this current look is what I am absolutely obsessed with and that is because it is super simple and easy. I’ve found myself to be very busy this summer, so this is a perfect outfit for a casual, unplanned afternoon or night with your girls.

First off, one of my favorite purchases I have made over this summer would include this Express double buckle western belt. I have found that it really pulls the whole outfit together. I love how unique it is with the double buckle, and also how easy it is to adjust to different lengths.

Since I wanted to keep this look pretty casual, I decided to add a black velvet necklace with a silver circle that complemented my black and silver belt. You also have the option to make the necklace go from a choker to a long piece, which was something that won me over when I first bought it. Another simple accessory that is perfect for something casual would include some sort of crossbody purse. I am a big fan of my Michael Kors one, but for many reasons, this type of purse is super practical and easy for you to carry around. And of course, I can’t forget to mention my favorite aviator, mirrored Ray-Ban sunglasses.

I always have the best luck with Express jeans, especially when they’re on sale! In this look, I am wearing distressed skinny jeans from, of course, Express. From my personal experiences I have found it very hard to find comfy and well-fitted jeans for my body type, considering I am only 5’2. The jeans pictured here actually turned into my favorite pair. It’s a huge plus when they actually fit my length, and where I feel comfortable enough to wear them all day and not want to go home and put on my leggings.

Accessories are key to any outfit. What are your favorite go-to accessories? Let us know in the comments below!

A Guide to the Perfect Movie Marathon

During the summer, I always catch myself with more free time than usual. Because this is my first summer since starting college, entertaining myself has become a new challenge. Now that it’s August, I can confidently say that I have perfected my movie marathon routine since I moved back home.

Personally, my favorite part of movie marathons are the snacks. If I’m being honest, movie marathons are just another excuse for me to eat an excessive amount of sweets. If you are planning on taking some time to watch a few of your favorite movies, I highly recommend stocking up on your favorite movie theater-esque snacks. Some of my essentials are Sour Patch Kids, Izze soda, and stove-popped popcorn (with a few added ingredients, of course).

To make the Circus Animal popcorn above, I started with about 8 cups of popped popcorn. Next, I salted the popcorn to balance out the sweetness of the marshmallow coating and Circus Animal Cookies. To make the marshmallow coating, I melted 2 tablespoons of salted butter and 2 cups of mini marshmallows in a medium-sized sauce pan. Then, I slowly poured the marshmallow coating over the popcorn in a large bowl. Lastly, I added rainbow sprinkles and Circus Animal Cookies. This recipe is a great alternative to having traditional popcorn with your movie!

When I’m getting ready to snuggle up and watch a few movies, I always make sure to dress comfortably. Absolutely nothing beats a cozy sweatshirt, leggings, and a pair of fuzzy socks!

Obviously, the most important part of a movie marathon is the movies. This summer, I’ve been loving La La Land, the live-action remake of Beauty and the Beast, and my personal favorite Rom-Com, She’s All That. If you are planning to use Netflix for your next movie marathon, I recommend watching To the Bone, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, and Before We Go.

Shirt and Sweet—Styling Your Summer Shirtdress

In the world of timeless fashion, a must-have for this summer is the classic shirtdress. This look is feminine, fresh, and very comfortable, making it the perfect dress for any occasion. It has been adopted time and time again by celebrities such as Audrey Hepburn and Grace Kelly, making it a signature piece for every woman. This is a look everyone should have in their closet. The dress can be easily worn up or down depending on the occasion. It can also be layered and serves as a great transitional piece from season to season.

This ongoing trend has been adopted by various fashion brands this year giving their own twist on the timeless classic. Brands such as Monse and Acne have added these pieces to their runways by taking the classic dress and adding a more modernized interpretation. Both brands played with different silhouettes and added different textures to the all-time classic.

Focusing on a more feminine look, the classic button-down shirt is both fun and very versatile. Layering is a must when wearing this classic dress. Pairing up the dress with statement accessories such as bright bags and shoes can ultimately bring the whole look together. A pair of pearl earrings is also a must for this casual and comfy look. Focusing on different textures is always a good idea when completing this look, which can add a fun twist to a timeless classic.

The shirt dress is a must have for any woman looking for style and comfort, whether you choose to stick to the classic silhouette or opt for a more modern interpretation, this look is here to stay.

The Only Item You Need to Survive the Summer Heat

At this age, unfortunately, we’re passed the point of being able to pull off denim cutoffs every day with sneakers and a spaghetti strap tank top all summer. No longer does summer entail of spending all day at the pool and all night running around town with your best friends. There are things to do and work to be done; however, the summer heat hasn’t changed despite the fact that our style has to. So how do we stay cool and still look professional? The answer lies in this summer’s biggest trend.

Flowy dresses have seamlessly made their way into every It Girl’s wardrobe since summer began. Not only are they easy to throw on, they’re also dressier than your regular summer go-to’s. Dress it down on the weekends with a pair of white sneakers or up with some strappy sandals when you’re at the office. Go with a simple pattern and gold jewelry to finish off the effortless ensemble. Trust me, in no time, you’ll be tossing out all your old cutoffs to make room in your closet for summer dresses.

How to Incorporate Matching Sets Into Your Summer Wardrobe

Sometimes picking the perfect outfit can be extremely time-consuming. Or maybe you’re just having one of those days where you don’t have the energy or the time to put together a head-turning look. It’s lazy moments like those that the latest spring and summer trend—matching sets—can be a lifesaver. In a matter of minutes, you can throw one on and look instantly put together, chic, and seem like you put some effort into your outfit without having to go through the hassle of having to combine a top and bottom.

As the fashion trends change, designers are bound to alter the styles and cuts of matching sets. And as the new seasons roll in, the colors, fabrics, and prints also tend to vary in order to match the color pallet and characteristics of the current season. At the peak of summer, it’s difficult to miss the bright colors and lightweight fabrics on the shop windows as the new trends hit the stores. And I am sure you have seen a few mannequins rocking matching sets on the windows of your favorite stores.

But the best thing about matching sets isn’t the colors and fabrics that they come in. If we are going to be honest here, my favorite thing about matching sets is that it’s a two-for-one kind of deal. Not only can you wear the set together, but you can also mix and match it with other items in your closet. Whether you’re dealing with a skirt, pants, or shorts, you can pair it with a variety of tops to create a casual or dressy look. Meanwhile, the top is just as versatile and can be worn with anything from denim to leather pants to your favorite shorts.

Whether you are looking to dress up or dress down your matching set, it’s all about the shoes you pair it with. It can be paired with sandals for an everyday casual look, or the latest trends in heels for work or a dressier look. It’s all up to you!

Keep matching sets in mind next time you’re out and about at the mall looking for a cute new outfit. I’m sure you won’t be disappointed.

5 Tips for a Simplistic Summer

Now I won’t lie, I’m one for “the drama” when getting dressed, hence why I love fall fashion. It entails somehow getting a ridiculous amount of clothing to sing a harmonious song. And quite frankly, I enjoy every second of it! You can compare summer to being stuck in an oven at 450 degrees, which is why this time of the year calls for simplicity. Summer fashion is not about clothing working together, it’s about highlighting pieces that can stand on their own. This makes getting dressed every morning a little harder. Summer garments are simple, which makes it difficult to look like you put in the effort. Let’s be honest, Fashionistas, we all want to look like we tried without trying, of course. Here are a few tips to help you achieve your perfect simplistic summer look!

1—Layer up. Yes, you read that right. Even though you’re probably looking at your iPhone while it says 90 degrees and looking back at the screen wondering if I’m crazy, I’m not! Adding dimension to an outfit is important and layering does just that. Ditch the cardigan and throw on a sleeveless trench. This is a perfect way to add elegance to any outfit.

2—Keep your base simple. No one wants to be worrying about their outfit through out their day, which is where rule number two comes into place. Bodysuits are a one stop shop. Put it on and go! No worrying about tucking in your blouse or having to fix it throughout the night. There are plenty silhouettes available to choose from, so go a little crazy and have some fun!

3—Say goodbye to shorts. Shorts are a summer staple and will forever be. However, they get boring when you constantly see the same styles. Don’t be afraid to wear pants during the summer. Just make sure they are loose, breathable, and cute, of course. Pants hold their own weight coming in strong colors, textures, and silhouettes. This makes them a great foundation for an outfit.

4—Ditch mixing, let’s match. Co-ord sets, the fashion god’s gift to us on our laziest days! They take away the stress of analyzing pieces as separates. Co-ord sets are my go-to for summer days and nights when I’m not in the mood to fight with my closet. They should be yours too!

5—Footwear and accessories. We often forget how strong of a voice shoes and accessories have. The most basic outfit can be transformed by them. Stop viewing shoes and accessories as an extra and start looking to them as staples!

As always I hope you’ve learned a little something to spice up your wardrobe and put your fashionable mind at ease.

4 Ways Out-of-State Students Can Adapt to Their New Environment

Don’t know your new state too well? Overwhelmed with a sense of culture shock? As an out-of-state student myself, I found it quite challenging to get used to my new life in a state I was unfamiliar with. Not only did I not know anyone at my university, but I had no idea how I could ever call Tampa, Florida home. I have found that these four ways have helped me change that perspective!

1—Get a Sense of the Culture.

One of the easiest ways to get to know your town a little better is by visiting museums and learning more about what makes it unique! Does your town have a quirky, modern art scene, or does it have more of a laid back country feel? Does it have a fascinating history? Travel guides are an awesome way to educate yourself about your surroundings! Nothing makes you feel more connected to a town than by learning more about its background.

2—Explore Yummy Food Spots.

When it doubt, grub! If you’re feeling homesick and are craving some food from your hometown, try finding a place that serves that cuisine. Not used to the food culture of your town? Take a risk and try something new! Create a tradition among your friends by finding an amazing restaurant that you can make your go-to spot, and don’t forget to snap a pic of all the great looking food to show your family back at home!

3—Find the Hidden Gems.

Want to feel like a local? Hang with the locals! Talk to students who are from the town and find out if they have any hidden spots that only locals really know about. This could be a restaurant, nature trail, or even a simple hang-out area. It is always much more fulfilling to live like a local than constantly doing the main attractions. To make things interactive, create a travel journal and write about all of the amazing discoveries you made!

4—Get Involved On Campus.

Getting involved on campus not only allows you to make connections with people on campus, but it also creates a sense of community. Often times you can find another out-of-state student who is going through your same situation. Being away from home is sometimes tough, and homesickness can shine a negative light on your new home. Having an amazing support system that will be there when you’re far away from your family allows you to feel like you’ve created a home away from home and brings positive energy into your life.

By doing all of these things, I have found myself falling in love with a place I can gladly call a second home––Tampa. I’ve discovered so many beautiful things about a town that I thought I would have no interest in.
