Shirt and Sweet—Styling Your Summer Shirtdress

In the world of timeless fashion, a must-have for this summer is the classic shirtdress. This look is feminine, fresh, and very comfortable, making it the perfect dress for any occasion. It has been adopted time and time again by celebrities such as Audrey Hepburn and Grace Kelly, making it a signature piece for every woman. This is a look everyone should have in their closet. The dress can be easily worn up or down depending on the occasion. It can also be layered and serves as a great transitional piece from season to season.

This ongoing trend has been adopted by various fashion brands this year giving their own twist on the timeless classic. Brands such as Monse and Acne have added these pieces to their runways by taking the classic dress and adding a more modernized interpretation. Both brands played with different silhouettes and added different textures to the all-time classic.

Focusing on a more feminine look, the classic button-down shirt is both fun and very versatile. Layering is a must when wearing this classic dress. Pairing up the dress with statement accessories such as bright bags and shoes can ultimately bring the whole look together. A pair of pearl earrings is also a must for this casual and comfy look. Focusing on different textures is always a good idea when completing this look, which can add a fun twist to a timeless classic.

The shirt dress is a must have for any woman looking for style and comfort, whether you choose to stick to the classic silhouette or opt for a more modern interpretation, this look is here to stay.

Women’s Fashion and How to Beat the Heat this Summer

It’s summertime and you might be wondering how you can master the perfect summer outfit while beating the heat. July and August are definitely the hottest summer months, so how can you possibly look good while staying cool at the same time? My go-to outfit for the heat is something light and flowy that will definitely keep you cool and chic this summer.

The first key to having the perfect summer outfit is making sure that you are wearing light fabrics. Wearing heavy or clingy materials in the summer is the first thing you want to avoid. My biggest suggestion is to wear a light and flowy chambray shirt. The shirt will allow your body the space it needs to breathe when you are out in the hot sun all day long. This will also help you avoid the horrible feeling of your clothes sticking to your body when you sweat. Another thing to consider is the color of top you are wearing. We all know that one person who wears black year-round, or maybe that person is you, but you want to wear light colors rather than dark. Wearing light colors is just another way to help you stay cool on a hot summer day. Rather than soaking in the heat like dark colors, these light colors will help reflect the sunlight.

Another thing that can become a dilemma for women is how to accessorize without feeling restricted. When it comes to adding accessories in the summertime, the phrase less is more is definitely true. You want to keep it on the simple side by adding delicate pieces. The best thing to add to any outfit is a simple bracelet, small rings, and a cute pair of earrings.

In the summer, it’s important to have a purse that is just as light as your outfit. While fun and flirty bags are super colorful in the summer, to avoid having to constantly switch it up, opt for a light neutral color. Having a purse that doubles as a crossbody bag and a handbag are perfect for every event. It will still be just as chic and it will save you from having to constantly change up your purses throughout the week.

Lastly, if you would rather go for a one piece in the summer, you can go for a simple, embroidered romper. Wearing a romper will allow you to skip the pain of being constrained by pants in the hot summer sun.

Beating the heat while having a cute outfit can seem nearly impossible these days. By keeping your summer wardrobe light and flowy you don’t have to worry about summer sweats ruining your daytime look.

Music Festival Must-Haves

Summer is in full swing, and along with the warmer months comes an abundance of music festivals. Music festivals are a great way to connect with people, and they are definitely an excuse to go out of your comfort zone with fashion and try something new. Here are some essentials that will make your festival experience more enjoyable, memorable, and that can all conveniently fit in your trendy backpack or crossbody bag!

1—SPF. This may seem like an obvious essential for a festival and being out in the strong rays all day, but it is an important one. Festivals are predominantly outside with minimal shade. While you are jamming and dancing to your favorite band, the least of your worries should be getting sunburned, so apply and reapply that SPF to stay safe from the sun all day.

2—Disposable/Film Camera. This is a great way to capture moments in an inexpensive way. You can find either a disposable camera or a cheap film camera anywhere from Goodwill to Target. You don’t have to worry about losing or lugging around your big expensive camera or phone if you opt to go the disposable route. I think that disposable cameras are more fun anyway because they give the photos an old time feel, and it’s a nice surprise to relive the memories when you get them developed later on.

3—Sunglasses. This is a great way to spice up a festival outfit while also protecting your eyes. Sunglasses can be the statement piece of any outfit and make you stand out from the crowd. Sunglasses are a must-have to have an enjoyable day in the sun. Get a trendy pair of sunglasses to shade your eyes before heading to a music festival this summer.

4—Reusable Water Bottle

.At festivals, there are a bunch of water refill stations. Bringing a reusable water bottle is a great option so you stay hydrated in the sweltering heat of summer. Opt for an insulated water bottle to keep your water ice cold all day. You are going to be on the move, traveling from stage to stage in crowds of people, and it’s easy to get dehydrated. Bring a reusable water bottle to keep your body hydrated all festival long!

Beach, Please—Here’s The Look You Need For Vacation

Despite a less than fabulous start to a summer full of classes and work days, a mini vacation fell into my lap at the best possible time. I knew this was worth a new summer outfit, so I set out to put together the easiest beach look for a hot, hot, hot day on the North Carolina coast.

The Look

To tackle 95 degrees plus the combination of wind and humidity, I grabbed a lightweight romper in white to bring out my tan (well, sunburn). My sheer kimono is great for an added pop without the extra weight. This is a recipe for equal parts comfortable and stylish. (Not featured: the outtakes of my attempt at controlling my clothes against the wind.)

The Accessories

Any opportunity to wear these tassel earrings must be taken advantage of. Mine are from Express, but this Rebecca Minkoff pair is gorgeous. Low-heeled sandals are my go-to vacation shoes—they’re so comfortable and go with everything! Don’t forget a statement bag and a pair of sunglasses that will protect your eyes from harmful rays.

There is no better way to refresh halfway through the summer than getting to the coast and swapping the textbooks out for sunscreen. Throw a great photo shoot spot and an easy day-to-night look into the mix and your vacation is perfect! I’ll be checking days off of my calendar until summer school is out and the real vacation starts. Until then, I’ll be planning my next beach ensemble in between pop quizzes.

How to Dress for Adventure This Summer

I’m going to be honest with you, the most adventurous I’ve been this summer is getting out of bed and spontaneously whipping up a snack in the middle of the night. However, summer’s just begun, and ‘tis the season of travel and adventure. When you live in Jersey, frequent trips to the beach or boardwalk are common. The problem I’ve always had with making these trips is wanting to be comfortable, but at the same time wanting to look cute for all the pictures you might take along the way and there. You know it’s going to be hot all day, especially in a cramped car with all your friends. Although a dress would be easy and cute, you’re not going to get the freedom of movement that you would in a pair of shorts.

adventure shorts

My favorite summer staple this year is this pair of mom shorts. What makes mom shorts different from regular shorts? They’re slightly roomier all around, high-waisted, and look great when paired with practically anything. I paired these shorts with a jade green ribbed halter bodysuit. The bodysuit adds a pop of color to the black ensemble—for those of us who love black too much to give it up in the summer.

Complete adventure outfit

Of course, every Fashionista needs a cute purse, even on an adventure. This compact crossbody has a snakeskin design along the sides and is the perfect size for travel. I paired the outfit with these simple black block heel sandals that are super comfortable and extremely versatile.

Adventure crossbody bag

I kept it fairly simple with any other accessorizing. Although the basic tattoo chokers are still cute, they’re starting to get a little tired. Trade it in for a dainty chain choker like the one I’m wearing. It’s simple and you won’t be fidgeting with it all day. All you need to finish it off is your favorite pair of shades and you’re good to go!

All-American Colors for Memorial Day Weekend

As we recognized Memorial Day and remembered those who lost their lives for us, it was also a chance to appreciate time with loved ones who are around, and show a bit of American pride. I took the opportunity to show my pride this weekend by pulling out my all-American colors through my wardrobe, while also taking advantage of the much warmer weather. I paired some of my best summer pieces: a white top, some jeans, and a statement red purse to tie it all together.

For this weekend look, I pulled out this Forever 21 all white off-the-shoulder top, with a bit of embroidery around the top and bottom. I paired this with a simple pair of mid-rise indigo blue jeans to keep the look casual. I opted with a pair of black open-toe sandals, with little tassels on the back. For accessories, I have my favorite bright red cross-body bag from Prince & Fox. I kept my jewelry to be more gold, with a little gold heart necklace, a couple of rings, and gold and black watch and my favorite flower bracelet from Hawaii, and kept the nails a light nude.To be prepared for cooler weather, I brought along an essential denim jacket.

While the outfit itself was made up of basics, I tried to make the look a little bit more colorful and fun with the pop of color from the red cross-body. Also, I added a bit more dimension with the embroidery on the top and tassels on the shoes. It was great to get in the spirit of summer with this look.

How to Bring Southern Trends Up North

It’s no secret that trends all over the world are extremely different. I witnessed this when I moved from Chicago to Auburn, Alabama. When I started my freshman year of college, I was surprised by how differently everyone dressed. I was excited to be surrounded by new trends and ideas, but I also wasn’t ready to completely lose my sense of style. Thankfully, I figured out a way to combine my personal style with southern style.

The first trend that I saw when I moved below the Mason-Dixon Line was statement earrings. This was probably the most shocking trend to me. The only time I wore “big” earrings was for a school dance. However, down south it was a regular thing. Initially, I didn’t think I would be able to pull this trend off. But with the right simplistic outfit, anyone can pull them off. The earrings I found are from Francesca’s Collections.

Like any other town, Free People is everyone’s favorite brand. The bohemian flare the brand possesses adds pop to any outfit. My shirt is from Free People and is a staple for any closet. Another large trend in the South is wide-leg pants. This is a trend that I just can’t seem to wrap my head around, so I substituted this with harem pants from American Eagle.

The most shocking Southern trend was the use of bright colors. Ninety percent of my wardrobe is filled with neutrals, so seeing girls wearing hot pink, neon yellow, and bright orange on the daily was unusual. After researching this obsession with bright colors, it turns out that these colors are very trendy this summer, so I incorporated this hot pink Kate Spade bag with my black outfit.

Would you rock any of these trends? Let me know in the comments below!

STYLE ADVICE: Savvy Summer Style

Let’s give a cheer, for summer is finally here—hooray! These past few weeks have been absolutely beautiful, making the last push through finals a bit more bearable.

As summer has finally made its way around, I am super excited to start pulling out my favorite warm weather pieces. Say hello to jumpers, rompers, and dresses galore! While playing around with layers in the winter is fun and all, there’s nothing quite like pulling out an adorable sundress or romper from your closet when you’re on the go.

My summer style is all about comfort, cuteness, and ease. I don’t know about you, but my days are constantly go, go, go, running from one place to the next, which is why having pieces such as this cute romper are essential for Fashionistas on the go. Part of mastering summer style without losing your unique, chic look is having these grab-and-go, must-have pieces, as you’ll never have to worry about mixing and matching a top and bottom…. it’s all in one!

Like all seasons, summer weather can be unpredictable. I always have a denim jacket on me no matter where I go, just in case a cool front decides to make way. As you’ve probably noticed, denim jackets are no longer a “moms only” piece. They’ve once again become a classic staple that pairs easily with just about every outfit. I swear by my denim jacket, and if you don’t already own one yourself, I highly suggest making the investment… or raiding your moms closet!

Last but not least, the summer season is the perfect time to switch up your day-to-day accessories and perhaps splurge on a fun new purse. This Kate Spade purse you’re seeing here is perfect for summer. The chestnut color goes with absolutely everything, from fun prints to neutrals, and the little pink spade adds a cute pop of color.

No matter how you chose to rock your summer wardrobe, wear it with confidence and dress for you!

WHAT TO WEAR: Girls’ Date

I love my job at Madewell for two reasons: amazing denim readily available (quick side note: I’ve been suggesting everyone buys this pair of 10″ high-rise jeans for the past two months), and for connecting me with the most supportive group of friends. My gal pals and I try to go out at least once a month—whether it be to brunch or a movie. Although this day is filled with laughs and gossip, it’s also one of the best places to showcase our styles. With my friends in mind, I caught this Fashionista in downtown Providence, and immediately thought how perfect her outfit would be for one of these girls’ dates.

Personally, I loved this Fashionista’s T-shirt dress as the focal point of her outfit. A T-shirt dress is the perfect go-to in the spring or summer since they are lightweight and comfortable. Our girls’ dates can go on for hours sometimes, so it’s best to wear something easy.

Another reason I love T-shirt dresses is because they can easily reflect any personal style. For instance, this Fashionista wore high top Vans and her favorite vintage jewelry to reflect her self-proclaimed “tomboy aesthetic.” As I said, T-shirt dresses can be styled in an infinite number of ways. One of my best friends loves to pair her T-shirt dress with kitten heels and a bandana on her neck to reflect her more girly style.

The accessories that this Fashionista uses are subtle, yet I’m still obsessing. Not only are they super cute (talking about you River and Thread bracelets), but they’re also super practical. Her crossbody bag is the ultimate girls’ date accessory, since these dates often turn into spontaneous hour-long adventures. It’s adorable and can hold anything this Fashionista might need (i.e. tissues, in case someone gets a little emotional).

Although girls’ dates are fun and important, let this Fashionista remind you the real reason for girls’ dates—an excuse to showcase your best look.

STYLE GURU STYLE: Love and Overalls

Spring has officially arrived after a long, cold Midwest winter. Fashionistas are eager to start wearing the latest trends now that the temperature has warmed up. With the spring season comes bright whites and vibrant colors. Throughout winter, I like to keep my outfits neutral and dark. My key colors are black, navy, maroon, and nude. Now that the flowers are blooming and the sun is shining, my wardrobe needs some color. Instead of diving right into the bright and vibrant colors, I’m going to transition my outfits into the new season.

I’ve been so excited to wear my new overalls that I bought in Chicago weeks ago. The overalls take up most of my outfit, so I didn’t want to overpower it with a bright or patterned top underneath. I chose to go with a plain white knit top. The bright white complements the dark color of the overalls and is on trend for the spring season. I paired it with a black pair of Birkenstocks. The slip-on style of the shoe makes the outfit look carefree and comfortable. The dark blue overalls and white knit top are classic and clean, but I knew I wanted a little pop of something. Pink is a big color this season, so I added a pop of color to my outfit with my bright pink Kate Spade crossbody purse.

If you are someone like me that is just now coming out of their dark, winter shell, try transitioning your outfits with hints of color instead of diving right into the latest, bright spring colors. You will feel like your clothing selection is bigger because you aren’t wearing all the spring trends at once.
