New Ways to Style Military Boots for Fall

There’s no need to defend my feet from dirty trench water, because I stick to pavement and the occasional puddle. The only thousand-yard stare I have experienced is spotting a must-have item from across the store and instantaneously falling in love. What can I say? Military boots are just super cute right now.

Originally created to withstand harsh weather conditions and mortal combat, military boots were made to be sturdy. Nearly indestructible, but definitely not cute. However, when chunky boots became a style rather than a necessity, the cuteness factor skyrocketed. Now anyone can purchase full-on glitter military boots, or even a pair with heels.

Combat boots come with a stately, traditional vibe. They’re structured, neutral, and classic. These shoes are popularly styled with jeans and a flannel; however, the possibilities are endless in terms of style. A baggy sweater or cropped T-shirt with chunky boots are also popular combinations. I wear maroon Dr. Marten’s regularly, and that slight pop of color adds so much spunk to my outfits.

For some Style Gurus, the masculinity of military boots is overwhelming; however, I think even the girliest of girls should give them a go. Boots look great with pants as well as dresses and skirts. Outfits should be chosen based on what you find stylish in your comfort zone. A flowery dress with boots is always a pleasant surprise in terms of street style.

Everyone loves a good guilty pleasure outfit. This summer, I lived in Birkenstocks. They’re the most convenient shoe for my everyday business. Once it gets colder and I replace shorts with sweatpants, I pair my Dr. Marten’s with acid-wash sweats and a casual shirt. It’s easy, comfortable, and appropriate in snow and rain; however, it looks edgy for a lazy day outfit.

Pro tip: do not settle on full retail prices. Dr. Marten’s boots are great quality but sell for well over $100 at popular stores or on the website. It’s important to check thrift stores before committing to a big purchase. In times like these, it’s also nice to have places like Plato’s Closet or apps like RetailMeNot.

The Must-Have Summer Item That Will Have You Baring It All

Okay, maybe not baring it all, but just enough. Are you like me and need a super easy spring and summer style to help you pull off your cute jeans, skirts, or favorite heels?

The ultra trendy off-the-shoulder silhouette is flying off the racks at all of your favorite retailers everywhere. If you are like and enjoy people watching, one of the many popular looks I am sure you have seen is the super cute and flirty off-the-shoulder silhouettes.

It is the hottest look that has been incorporated into everything from blouses, dresses, rompers, bridal, and even swimwear. The variations of this sexy and sophisticated look are virtually endless.

Many Fashionistas turn to this option as a basic or staple for their everyday campus look or for a fun night out in the city. The best feature about this trend is that the majority of women find the silhouette very flattering. Like so many, Fashionistas have problem areas, too! With this trendy design, you can keep the focus of the eyes toward your face and shoulders and away from lower body problem areas especially if that is something you struggle with.

As seen on the runway, the off-the-shoulder trend can range from high fashion to street style simply by the way the look is styled.

In these looks, you see the effortless Fashionista on campus rocking her American Eagle Outfitters bright blue off-the-shoulder blouse, vintage distressed flare denim with a tan floppy hat, a beaded necklace, and chunky bracelets. This particular style she has is one of the many variations to this trend. Notice the off-the-shoulder illusion yet there is still material located in the neckline of the blouse. This is an awesome option for those that love the look but don’t quite want to commit to the full off-the-shoulder trend.

Make sure to head into your local American Eagle Outfitters or H&M so you, too, can bare your shoulders during the hot summer months. You will be no less than a super trendsetter.

A Beginner’s Guide to Washington D.C.

Last week, I took a day trip to Washington, D.C. with my parents. It felt like for the first time, I was actually seeing D.C. I have been there before when I was little, and on field trips in middle school, but they were nothing special. For the first time, I was able to plan my own trip to highlight the attractions I have always wanted to explore. Since I had such an amazing time there, I wanted to share my experience with you!

Volpe080117

One of the best things about Washington, D.C. is that the majority of the major museums in the city are free. My parents and I chose to visit the National Gallery of Art first. The building is basically all marble and filled to the brim with beautiful art pieces. Even if you aren’t someone who enjoys art, this museum is definitely worth a visit. There are so many different exhibits to enjoy, from 18th-century European art to modern photographs and sculptures.

After the National Gallery of Art, we visited the historic Washington Monument, a must-see when you are in D.C. It is one of the attractions the District is known best for. To close out the trip, we ended the day at the Jefferson Memorial. I would absolutely recommend visiting here. It’s a great place to take some pictures with your family and friends right on the water.

If you’ve never been to D.C. before, I would totally recommend planning a trip before the summer is over! It’s a historical and political city that has so many things to do. There is an array of different museums you can visit, delicious (and slightly overpriced) food, and the National Mall where you can do some serious shopping.

Before you embark on your big city adventure, there are a few things to keep in mind. If you are visiting in the summer, make sure to dress appropriately for the heat. I chose to keep it simple with a plain white bodysuit and some distressed denim shorts. To make your trip more comfortable, I would suggest wearing sneakers with support because there will be a lot of walking. The bag I chose was a leather backpack that kept all my personal items concealed. It was perfect for being a tourist for the day. Also, remember to stay hydrated.

Black and White Chic

We all have those moments where we need to get ready quickly but struggle with deciding what to wear. We want to wear something fashion-forward but easy to put together. When this happens to me, I always go to my black and white section of my closet. Pairing black and white pieces can be styled quickly and look so chic.

With my first outfit, I chose a monochromatic look. I paired together a white eyelet off-the-shoulder top with white skinny jeans. A monochromatic base gives the outfit a sleek look but allows you to be creative with your accessories. I wanted to dress up the outfit, so accessorizing with black was the perfect touch. The black studded buckle heels added some texture, while the satin neck tie added some elegance. I couldn’t leave the house without a pair of sunnies, so I grabbed my red cat-eye sunglasses to add a pop of color to the outfit.

For my next outfit, I wanted something more causal. I used the same white skinny jeans in the first look paired with a black top. I am a huge fan of the ruffle trend this season, and the ruffle detail on this black top adds some pizazz to my outfit. I wanted the top to be the focal point of this outfit, therefore I kept the accessories very minimal. I went with a pointed-toe, black ankle bootie, a black and silver western belt, and my go-to black Celine sunglasses. These accessories added the perfect touch without overpowering the outfit.

The last outfit was my personal favorite because I combined some of my favorite pieces. Again, I used the same white skinny jeans paired with a black lace trim top. Dainty lace tops have been very in this summer and add an extra detail to an outfit. I am loving blazers this season and thought this white blazer would be a great layering piece. My platform espadrille wedges are the comfiest shoes ever. I wanted to have fun with this outfit, so adding a black bandana was a perfect choice!

I hope this gave you some inspiration on how you can get ready in minutes just by pairing black and white pieces. I would love to see how you style similar looks on social media, so tag @CFashionista the next time you post!

3 Red Lipstick Looks You Can Actually Wear During Summer

Maybe it’s the Swiftie in me, but I’ve always been a big fan of red lipstick. When I’m looking for a pick me up, or a way to elevate my #ootd, I always turn to my favorite tube of red lipstick to get the job done. Red is a statement color, it’s bold and bright, but in a way, it’s also become a little safe. These days when Fashionistas and beauty gurus alike are rocking every shade from neon green to gray, red becomes a classic choice. While it may be the best color for the winter holiday season, red lipstick can have its moment in the summer months too. I’ve selected a few red lipstick looks to making your summer rock in red.

Classic Hollywood Glam: A simple cat eye and bold red lip can never do you wrong, no matter the season. Keep your face makeup light and natural, with a slight contour and neutral eye. Build on a glamorous winged liner and select your favorite shade of red for your lips. False lashes are optional to step up your game. When picking the best shade of red lisptick for your skin tone, lean towards a bluer red for cool tones or a shade with an orange base for warm tones. Those with neutral tones, swatch until you find a shade somewhere in the middle. Have fun with the challenge! Finding the perfect shade of red lipstick for your skin tone is like striking gold.

Peachy Glow: Color your eyelids in shades of the best summer fruits, and don an orange-leaning or scarlet shade for your lips. For this look, use pink, orange, or yellow (or all three!) and create a monochromatic and dreamy peachy look. I used my favorite shade of peach colored blush for a base on my lids as well as my cheeks. Brush up the blush onto your temples for extra drama. Highlight your cheekbones, brow bone, down your nose, and inner corner of your eyes in a golden shade and feel as bright and delicious as a summer treat. The red on your lips will take this summer glow to the next level.

Smoky and Sultry: Look as hot as a summer bonfire with this smoky eye evening look. Using shades of brown, leaning towards the bronze and golden browns, blend a smoky eyeshadow look on your lids. Add some bronzer and contour to your cheeks as well, and finish off with intense lashes and a wine colored red lipstick. The brown undertones in your shade of red will match the drama of your eyes and leave you with an eye-catching end-of-summer look.

The Only Item You Need to Survive the Summer Heat

At this age, unfortunately, we’re passed the point of being able to pull off denim cutoffs every day with sneakers and a spaghetti strap tank top all summer. No longer does summer entail of spending all day at the pool and all night running around town with your best friends. There are things to do and work to be done; however, the summer heat hasn’t changed despite the fact that our style has to. So how do we stay cool and still look professional? The answer lies in this summer’s biggest trend.

Flowy dresses have seamlessly made their way into every It Girl’s wardrobe since summer began. Not only are they easy to throw on, they’re also dressier than your regular summer go-to’s. Dress it down on the weekends with a pair of white sneakers or up with some strappy sandals when you’re at the office. Go with a simple pattern and gold jewelry to finish off the effortless ensemble. Trust me, in no time, you’ll be tossing out all your old cutoffs to make room in your closet for summer dresses.

Here’s What You Can Expect To Gain By Taking a Self-Defense Class

As a little girl I was warned not to talk to strangers. As a freshman in college I was told not to take drinks from them. Parents worry about their daughters staying out late at night. Women travel to the bathroom in packs. The threat of violence looms over a women’s life in a way that men will never experience. I remember in my sophomore year of college, there was a man who kept attacking women when they walked home to their dorms at night. Every store in my college town sold out of pepper spray that week. Luckily those women were able to fight him off or escape, but I couldn’t help but wonder what might have happened if the man wasn’t a drunk frat boy, but rather someone more sinister. My university (and many others) offers a beginners self-defense course for all incoming students to take for free, and while I urged all of my friends to go, not one of them did.

I have been a practicing martial artist since I was eight years old. I have primarily studied jukido jujitsu, a martial art that is a great blend of standard punching and kicking, joint locks and pressure point manipulation, and throws. Sometimes a martial artist can spend their whole life practicing their art but never have to apply it on the streets. Unfortunately, I have been attacked on multiple occasions, some circumstances more serious than others. Martial arts goes beyond what you do in the dojo and enters into your everyday logic and thinking. You don’t need 13 years of training to defend yourself or change your life for the better. In fact, just taking one self-defense class can improve or even save your life. Here are a few reasons why you should sign up for a class.

The Self-Defense: A beginners or basic self-defense class, especially one created for women, will be focused on teaching proper techniques and defense from attacks commonly thrown onto females. You can learn something as simple as releasing a hand from your wrist or waist, to learning how to get out from under someone who has you pinned to the floor. One class can make a life or death difference. It might be a hard concept to think about, but knowing how to release a choke or properly maneuver a technique so you can run can make all the difference. You don’t have to sign up to become a martial artist (although it is a great way to learn and exercise!) but you can devote an evening toward personal safety. It will go a long way to easing your mind some day.

Self-Awareness: A self-defense class or a study of martial arts doesn’t just teach you how to punch or kick someone, it also teaches one how to think about their surroundings and circumstances. Ever feel sketched out walking to your car after work? Besides asking for someone to escort you to your car, always try to park under a light and keep your keys ready in your hand. Once you’re in your car, lock the doors and drive away. The scroll through Instagram can wait until you get home. Have you ever left a party and had some group of guys catcall your girl gang? Look closely at the guys. What are they wearing? How tall are they? What color is their hair, eyes? Do they have tattoos? Do they favor a leg? While it may seem paranoid, taking in the details can make a difference, and taking a self-defense class can teach you tips and tricks to watching your back.

Confidence: Learning self-defense and how to take in your surroundings can go a long way to bringing some peace of mind. If you are more sure of yourself and your capabilities, your confidence will grow. You can stand up to a bully and face down an attacker. Knowing self-defense and applying what you have learned will make the jitters ease. Sometimes just being able to tell yourself that “you’ve got this” will be enough. No one wants to ever be in a circumstance where they have to defend themselves, but if it does happen, at least you will have the knowledge to care of the situation. You know what they say, “better safe than sorry.”

If These Bags Don’t Scream “Summer” I Don’t Know What Does

In this day and age as our phones get bigger and women’s jean pockets seem to get smaller (or disappear altogether), carrying a purse becomes essential. Filling a bag is never hard. Tossing in your phone, wallet, keys, and lipstick of the day is a must; litter the bottom of the bag with receipt paper and spare change, and I think you can consider yourself a classic American woman.

But not every purse is up to the challenge of your adventure of the day. Sometimes you don’t need to bring your massive Mary Poppins bag to dinner, or you need more than a clutch for a beach day. I’ve selected the perfect summer bags to tackle any day filled with sun and sand ahead of you.

The Camera Satchel Bag: This bag fits it all without looking bulky and weighing you down. Choose a satchel bag that easily stashes away your camera, wallet, and any other essentials for the day ahead of you. This purse will also serve well in the fall to carry your school notebooks or photoshoot essentials. I chose my bag in a sweet terra-cotta color, dancing on the spectrum of “millennial pink” for a classic cool girl vibe. Pair the purse with a sundress and block heels, and go explore some historical city streets.

The Mini Backpack: This small backpack fit a lot more than I ever expected it to. This was my vacation purse that I toted around with me when I was on island time, stashing away my small wallet, passport, and even my camera inside. The double straps of the backpack make it easier to adventure hands-free, and the size doesn’t slow you down. The mini size makes you look stylish, not just like a student. Pair with your favorite pair of denim shorts, tennis shoes, and power slogan t-shirt.

The Posh Beach Tote: Just because you’re going to the beach doesn’t mean you can’t look fashionable beyond your bathing suit. Stow your towel and sunscreen in a heavy duty and waterproof tote bag that doesn’t scream soccer mom. I took mine to the beach the other day and the tide tried to take it way, but it held up! Talk about durability. Also, the pebbled leather look and tassel element to this bag takes your beach day up a notch. Style with your favorite bikini and sandals.

Sit Still, Smell Pretty

Summer’s here, Fashionistas! There’s a ton of heat and sweat, but we all need to smell good. The last thing any of us wants is to end up ruining the night by being the “B.O.” victim. Along with good hygiene and deodorant of course, it’s important to add a finishing spray of your favorite scent before your last steps out the door. While most of this is something we should make into a daily routine, it’s even more important to do in the summer.

There are numerous options when it comes to picking out a scent that you like, which can be tough. You may like something fresh and flowery, fruity and light, deep and mystical, or chic and feminine. Whatever it may be, summer is all about smells that are nice and fresh and as long as you smell good, the job is well done. I picked out four of my top scents that will leave you smelling amazing, from head to toe!

1—COCO Mademoiselle by Chanel

COCO Mademoiselle is a very well-lasting scent that will linger throughout the day. It’s nothing sweet, but it is fresh. Its a luxurious spray that will vamp your outfit on a night out and give you character!

2—Acqua Di Gioia by Giorgio Armani

This is one of my favorites! Ever since I smelled this in a magazine sample, I was hooked on to it. Five years later, and it’s still my go-to scent. Acqua Di Gioia translates to “water of joy” and is a refreshing, yet sensual smell. It’s almost like smelling a bouquet of flowers, probably jasmine, but in an aquatic scene. It’s a smell everyone around you will love!

3—Chance by Chanel

Another Chanel perfume? Yes! You can never go wrong with Chanel when it comes to wearing something chic and feminine. Chance is a newer scent to me but it’s definitely a go. It’s light and sensual smell speaks luxury. A mix of jasmine and citrus, Chance has an unexpected floral smell that is subtle but also filled with energy.

4—Chloé by Chloé

The name says it all. This scent is definitely fresh and feminine. If you love floral scents, Chloé is the perfume for you! Its luminous scent will leave you smelling just like roses and cherry blossom! What could be better than smelling like flowers on a hot summer day?

While these are just a few of my favorites, there are many other perfumes that have been given a lot of praise and love too. For me, I’ll be switching off between these this summer!

A Sweet and Romantic Summer Makeup Look

As much as I appreciate the artistry of Instagram-famous makeup artists and their love for defined eyebrows and killer cat-eyes, I’ll always opt for a warm, romantic makeup look on myself. The Daisy by Marc Jacobs commercials best represent my favorite makeup style—I love being able to put on just a touch of makeup and still make a statement. I’m a sucker for furry brows, tinted lips, and rosy cheeks.

If I had to name my holy grail product, it would be blush—it can be used to add femininity and daintiness to your cheeks, act as a subtle eyeshadow, or even be dusted onto your lips for a pop of color. It can act as so many different products, and its flexibility is the reason why I’m always reaching for it in my daily routine.

For this look, I applied L’Oréal’s Studio Secrets Magic Lumi Light Infusing Primer ($13) all over this Fashionista’s face to act as a base. If you have normal-to-dry skin like her, I suggest using a light, everyday foundation like Make Up For Ever Ultra HD Invisible Cover Foundation ($43), Wet n Wild Photo Focus H2O Foundation ($6), or Bare Minerals Matte Foundation Broad Spectrum SPF 15 ($28). Next, I applied concealer in the highlighting areas and set it with a powder like in Wet n Wild’s MegaGlo Contouring Palette ($5) in the shade Caramel Toffee. Now we’re at my favorite part. I continue with a cool-toned contour shade, like in Wet n Wild’s Contouring Palette mentioned above, in the hollows of the cheeks and melt a rosy, peachy blush on the apples of the cheeks. The two meet, and they make magic, but it doesn’t stop there. I take a bronzer like Too Faced’s Chocolate Soleil Matte Bronzer ($30) and blend that on the hollows of the cheeks, forehead temple region, and other contour areas with a fluffy brush.

I wanted to keep everything else more simple, so I took some blush and bronzer and applied that color on the lid. I used Essence’s Make Me Brow Eyebrow Gel Mascara to shape her brows. Then I set the look with a translucent powder, added a highlight to the inner corners of her eyes, the arch of her brows, her cupid’s bow, and the tip of her nose. Finally, I finished off with a tinted lip balm and nude-pink lipstick.

Just like with fashion, the beauty of makeup is that it’s self-expressive. For some, this look may be too minimal. Of course, I love to glam it up every now and then, but for me, this makeup look stays true to what makes me feel beautiful and confident. In everything you choose to do, make sure your decisions accurately represent you and your personal style.
