How to Wear Borrowed From the Boys Trends

Every wonder if you could rock the styles of menswear but were too nervous to make the big leap? Now you can with a trend gaining popularity in the fashion world, opening the doors for women to try the looks of menswear. This trend is all about borrowing clothes from the boys. From graphic T-shirts, baggy shorts, and suit sets to rugged outerwear, Birkenstocks, sneakers, and masculine watches, the possibilities of rocking this look are endless and easy to achieve. This Fashionista I found on the city streets added her own flair to this style by combining refined accessories with more masculine pieces.

The inclusion of masculine pieces in the look were noted in her graphic T-shirt, dark denim, long shorts, olive Birkenstocks, and gold-plated leather watch. Her graphic T-shirt was emblazoned with the logo of the popular skater magazine, Thrasher. The red and oranges in the flames on the shirt were complemented by the Fashionista’s eye makeup look. The dark denim long shorts complemented the gray and black color palette of the look and added an ease to her outfit. The gold-plated leather watch was a nod to more a manlier style and tied in her accessories as well.

The Fashionista’s accessories added a tone of minimalism and structure to the relaxed vibe of the outfit. Her black leather, dual buckle belt perfectly matched her black leather mini backpack while her round silver sunglasses, thin silver hoops, white gemstone ring, and silver star choker, were a feminine touch to the more masculine outfit.

Menswear trends and clothing are no longer difficult to incorporate into your wardrobe. You can mix rugged, masculine pieces with feminine, refined accessories to make the trend more wearable. You can also keep a simpler color palette, as seen in the gray and darker hues of this Fashionista’s outfit, to sophisticate your look. Now go out there and put your own twist on this popular trend!

This is Why Androgyny is the New Black

If there is one thing fashion has taught me it’s that borrowing from the boys is vital for any chic wardrobe. But, what happens when the boys borrow back?

Fashion is an advocate for pushing boundaries and redefining what it means to be artful. London Men’s Fashion Week S/S 18 is proving to be one of the most gender fluid Fashion Weeks to hit the runway and it is not disappointing.

When gender-blended shirts, man skirts, and exquisite makeup dominated runways this June, it left me questioning whether this is the future of fashion.

Experimenting with the ever-so rapidly blurring lines between masculinity and femininity in fashion, I was inspired to create a versatile look that anyone can pull off.

Androgyny can be ambiguous or it can highlight a fusion of masculine and feminine traits within one outfit. Whichever approach you take, it is important to remember that being comfortable and being confident go together. Do what makes you feel you can be the best version of yourself.

In this outfit, I wanted to achieve a simultaneous expression of both genders. To start, I chose a Forever 21 Contemporary Crew Neck Sweater in Black ($28), which I cropped myself. I love an effortless long sleeve crop top because they highlight the broadness of my shoulders, while maintaining vulnerability throughout the outfit by exposing my torso.

To make sure I was comfortable in this outfit I chose to pair the DIY crop top with my favorite pair of BDG Girlfriend High-Rise Jeans from Urban Outfitters ($79). They give you just the right amount of coverage. These jeans show how diverse denim can be by the cut off hems, slashed knees, frayed ankles, and the subtle bleach spots.

Madewell is my go-to store for all things androgynous, effortless, and unexpected. To exaggerated the length of my legs I opted for The Lucien Boot in Leather from Madewell ($100). The rich leather and not-too-high wooden heel allow this timeless shoe to fit into your everyday wardrobe.

Accessories are everything. I was so stuck on the two-inch wooden heel of the boot that I wanted to complement it. To pull this off I paired the shoe with my suede cap to add color and texture to this gender-neutral look. I have pale blue eyes so to avoid squinting every second I threw on my beloved Forget Me Not Aviators ($25). These sunglasses provide a feminine touch to my outfit, at the same time the aviators frame and strengthen my jawline and cheekbones.

To accent this look, I chose this White Zip Pouch from Banana Republic that doubles as a crossbody bag because it’s as flexible as this outfit. When you have a bag, it is important to make sure your outfit can function with and without the bag.

WHAT TO WEAR: When Dressing for Spring

As the weather patterns slowly start to change, we are caught in that awkward transitioning stage that takes place in between seasons. It can be a confusing time for us when we’re trying to dress for the wacky weather. It’s all about finding the perfect balance for your look.

This Fashionisto created the perfect outfit for a winter to spring look. Layering pieces is key for battling the unpredictable temperatures when the seasons are changing. A lightweight leather jacket is a great transitional item; it’s suitable for both warm and cold temperatures and gives your look some edge. Underneath he wears a flower-printed button-down shirt which helps to channel some hints of spring. Styling details are also a major way to highlight the changes in season as well. He cuffs his straight leg pants, which is actually something I find myself doing when styling my outfits for spring. The minor detailing is somewhat reminiscent of a capri pant which is a staple piece for this time of year. Keeping chilly weather in mind, he styles this look with some long socks that peek out slightly from his cuffed pants, which also adds a pop of warm color. He throws on a pair of slip-on Vans and rounded black shades, giving the look an effortless vibe.

So, when dressing during this time of the year, there are a few tips to keep in mind. Layering lightweight pieces is key for dealing with drastic changes in temperature from day to day. You can channel the changes in season with simple outfit detailing like floral patterns and styling fixes. Also, sunglasses are great for any season! You can never go wrong with a cool pair of shades.

FASHION FROM ABROAD: European Wannabe

Last month I had the opportunity to go on a trip to Copenhagen, Denmark, and Stockholm, Sweden. One of the most interesting things to me was seeing all the different ways people dress in comparison to back home. Neutral colors, simplicity, and versatility are huge components in the European fashion world. I was lucky enough to come across a Fashionisto who defines the art of neutral tones.

This Fashionisto is dressed in black, tan, and army green. Basically all the colors you will see over in Europe. In Europe, especially Denmark and Sweden where the weather tends to be colder, you will see a lot of layers. Danish and Swedish people love to layer up on neutral tones when walking on the streets. This Fashionisto does as well. Since there is a lot of walking to do in Europe, you have to be comfortable yet fashionable. As you can see, this Fashionisto did so by bundling up with a black peacoat and two scarfs: a black one and a black and tan one to enhance his wardrobe. To add color, he paired his coat with army green pants to fit in with the European’s neutral tones. Lastly, he added some comfy black tennis shoes and sunglasses to finish off the look.

Although this outfit may be simple, you would not it see regularly in the United States. That is why culture and traveling are so important because you get to experience fashion in so many different places. I am glad I got to partake in this European wannabe’s look because it truly masters the essence of European fashion.

This is What it’s Like to Suffer From Bipolar Disorder

When I was 16 years old, I was diagnosed with bipolar disorder.

This wasn’t a surprise diagnosis; I had known things weren’t right in my head for quite awhile. I had fallen into a cycle of madness that only now, standing on the outside looking in, can I know what was truly happening.

Some days I felt like someone had struck a match against my skin. I was on fire, couldn’t everyone see? Flames shot out of my mouth, I would wave my arms and embers fell, blinding the eyes of those who stood too close to me. I felt so out of control. I was impulsive and rash; I did and said things I shouldn’t have.

And then other days it was as if someone dunked my head into the ocean. It was as if I was waterboarded, my head shoved under, my lungs filling with water, completely unable to come up for air. The worst part was, I didn’t want to. I settled on the ocean floor, I liked the quiet company of the waves. I had weights on my ankles, keeping me grounded. No one could pull me up.  It wasn’t until I started medication that I was handed a key to unlock my chains and rise again.

It was hard, so hard; both being on fire and drowning. How can you put that into simple terms with someone? How do you tell your friends or parents, who you love and care about you so much, that you thought about killing yourself yesterday? How do you explain that you don’t know why you feel a certain way, you just do? The only reason that existed was my brain chemistry.

There is an enormous stigma surrounding mental illness. It is something that is either romanticized or kept in the dark. I have had people tell me, “What a wonderful mind you must have,” when I reveal my illness. I have heard, “Oh, but you’ll get over it. You don’t actually feel that way. It’s all in your head.”

That’s the thing, they’re right: it is all in my head. My brain chemistry is different from someone without bipolar disorder. I have a disorder, an illness, a disease of my mind. I never asked for this. My illness is not a gift; it is a disability. I have spent countless hours crying into my pillow, to my psychiatrist and my parents, begging them please, “Why can’t I just be normal?” Why do I need extra focus and time to get work done? Why do I feel things twice as deeply as everyone else? Why do I fall into nights of listless and dark depression only to rise into days of a crushing and exhausting euphoria?

Some days I will talk about my mental illness very flippantly and other times I keep it very close to my chest, like it’s a poisonous secret. I am nothing more than a puppet master manipulating a shell of a person who is excellent at pretending to be okay. I don’t like myself, the master or the plaything.

But I am my illness, and I’ve managed to find a balance in both the light and the darkness. I share this with you to spread awareness. I need no sympathy, just understanding. Think before you judge mental illness, take a second to realize that the weather is not bipolar. I am.

My road to proper treatment and learning how to cope has been a long and arduous one. There have been some pit stops along the way, some turn arounds. The most important thing to me, in my own opinion, when it comes to coping with a mental illness, is to seek professional help and treatment. Your parents are meant to parent, not treat mental illness. Your friends are friends, not doctors. By making the choice to see a counselor, a therapist, and eventually a psychiatrist, my moods and managing my illness has been changed so much for the better. Because of my medication I am able to be highly functioning. I can wake up in the morning and complete my day, and when I go to bed at night, I am looking forward to another morning. It is nothing to be ashamed of, to take medicine. If you have the flu, you take medicine, no? This is the same thing. Instead of treating a stomach bug, you are treating the demons in your head. Taking the step to seek help is hard, but it is a crucial step when seeking treatment.

So okay, you’ve talked to a professional, you take medicine, now what? Try to find something that will provide some stability to your life. The best thing I ever did was adopt a puppy. He has given me something to be held accountable for. He has incorporated more structure into my life, and so, so much happiness. I also encourage regular exercise. It has been proven that exercise boosts moods and decreases stress. Aside from my regular workouts, I also make sure to just take walks, to be outside and get fresh air, and absorb the beauty of my surroundings. Focus on something outside of myself. I’ve also found that letting those close to you know about what triggers you, or how to help you in a crisis is so important to keeping yourself feeling safe. Never feel like you are asking too much of someone to look out for you. That’s what true friends are for.

If you suffer from a mental illness like me, whether it be the manic-depression that is bipolar disorder, anxiety, or an eating-disorder, it is important to know that you are not alone. There is an entire community out there with open arms just waiting for you to step into them. Help and change is possible. You have the strength to make it this far, you can have the strength to find help too. There are resources available that you can teach you the art of demon taming, the benefits of medication, and the power of just talking about it and letting it all out. It sure helped me here.

If you are having suicidal thoughts or need immediate help coping, please call emergency services or a suicide hotline such as National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-237-8255.

Do you suffer from bipolar disorder or another mental illness? How do you cope? If you feel comfortable, please share with us in the comments.

WHAT TO WEAR: Here Comes The Sun

Spring is currently creeping in (or running in screaming, if you’re in the deep south). As the days grow warmer, the sun brighter, and the grass greener, campus fashion is taking a turn toward spring break styles. It seems that we all can’t wait to forget about our responsibilities and just be free for a few days. Bring on the sun! Florals, leaves, and shorter sleeves are abound wherever you look.

Our Fashionisto knows how to stylishly adjust to the change in weather. He seamlessly incorporates this vintage leaf print button down with grungy distressed jeans and a silver chain.
Leaves and floral-inspired prints always work in the strange in-between stage leading up to spring. I know what you’re thinking. Florals? For spring? Groundbreaking. However, it’s a classic print for a reason! Floral creates a sense of peace and easiness. Even if it’s still a bit chilly wear you live, try to incorporate some florals into your wardrobe. Maybe mother nature will get the hint that it’s time to warm up.
Silver accents tie this outfit together. The earrings, necklace, rings, and chain are all silver. Coordinating jewelry makes your outfit look whole and put-together, instead of something you just threw on ten minutes before class (it’s okay, we’ve all been there). Instead of setting that alarm clock earlier, just add some matching jewelry to your outfit.
Anyone can pull off this look, guy or girl. When paired with distressed jeans or shorts, a button down shirt looks effortlessly cool and on-trend for spring.

ALL IN THE DETAILS: Knock Your Socks Off

Yeah, he is probably just a normal guy, walking around in some jeans. He has a goofy grin after talking to his friends about his night, so nothing really sets him apart. But then you see them. Those two glorious pieces of fabric that turn a standard daily look into a “holy cow, that man has his priorities straight.” I am talking about his socks, my friends. For those men out there who are not willing to take that baby step outside of their comfort zone to prove that they like to party, disregard this article. Read some other Style Guru’s article about how a leather jacket is totally rad, or you can stick to this article and learn the hard facts of life. I am here to preach about what no one will ever admit to you. Socks are super cool.

Now the greatest thing about magnificent socks are the elements of surprise, meaning pants. It isn’t as exciting to see someone with cool socks from a mile away. No, it is much better to think you are sitting down with a normal college man when BAM. His pants ride up a tad and you see the bottom of his socks. Conversation starter? Obviously.

The whole simple tone of his outfit, being black and gray consistently, is the look you want to go with when you are pairing it with those snazzy socks. Yes, I am saying that the jeans, shirt, jacket, and shoes are the accessories of the outfit, and the socks are the main attraction. Sue me. I would like to take a quick moment to compliment his jacket, though, because he looks fly. Is it a sports jacket? Is it from Lululemon Athletica? Is he going on a jog or going to the Queen’s charity ball? We will never know, but it keeps with the tone of the mystery. And what is with his Converse? How long has he had them for? Has it been a few years or has it been a few weeks of taking them through the grossest parts of Tucson? The world may never know.

My point to this article is to get those socks. The ones with the sloths on it? Add to cart. The ones with chicken wings and bowling pins? Yes please. The ones with those watermelon slices on it? Yes, I am talking to the basic white girls out there. Be trendy, because watermelons are apparently trendy for some reason. It is a fruit! How is a fruit trendy? I will do my research and get back to you, Fashionistas.

ALL IN THE DETAILS: Where Are All the Men At?

Who gets excited when you see a well-dressed man? I bet a lot of us ladies do! Men can be just as fashionable as ladies, if not more fashionable in some instances. The coined term for a stylish man is a Fashionisto. Men do not receive as much credit as ladies in the fashion industry in some circumstances. Although, some men have just as much knowledge when putting together a fashion forward look or outfit. Marvelous male designers like Marc Jacobs or Tom Ford have created stunning garments and we fashion forward people idolize them for their work. So ladies, we need to give men a little more credit!

“All in the Details” is a phrase meaning all the details put into a look or outfit. This Fashionisto is rocking this all black look (whoever said you can not wear all black is obviously wrong). Black is a very flattering color and honestly looks good on everyone. In this Fashionisto’s outfit, he decided to pair his all-black pants, sweater and trench coat look with black booties and a belt. To complete his look, he added a designer watch, a gold necklace, and designer sunglasses. This rad outfit would be great to go to class, a party, or even a interview. He spiced up simple garments and let me tell you, he slayed the scene!

Do you see how easy it is? All it takes is a little accessory to make a huge statement. Fashionistos do not be afraid to be who you are and look stylish. Men have just as much style knowledge as us ladies, so use it and create the perfect look.

WHAT TO WEAR: Commuting Style

Being a college student is sometimes hard, especially in the morning. Image that you have to wake up at 7 a.m. in a winter morning to manage a whole day’s classes, what’s the quickest look to remain appealing and dynamic? Sweater with a big coat of course! Do not get bored yet, the simplest match has so many distinctions.

The look for today is a set in the color of blue. The serenity blue is one of the annual colors of the year 2016. Girls have always been associated with sweet pink, however, what’s interesting about this look is that the wool-blend coat in quiet blue gives a feeling of tenderness as well. In combination with the masculine smart waistcoat, which is a waistcoat dress instead of a short vest, the strong and soft styles merge so well.

She’s not losing details either. She leaves the first button on the waistcoat undone to make a suit-like collar, which helps to lengthen the neckline and reveals the necklace. The ring necklace with a hexagram looks so simple, but cute. The oxford flats are classic and complementary. The silk stockings actually have a dark fringe on them. To fit the blue set, a bright rose red lipstick brings the point of her makeup.

While I named it commuting style, this look is suitable either for a presentation in class, or for attending a job interview for internships. It does provide a good impression of smart and chic. The best part is, it’s comfortable and warm. Now go and prepare a set comprised of a sweater and coat for tomorrow’s look.

STYLE ADVICE: Plaid is Back

As we are still battling through the winter months, it is getting difficult to pull out new stops to take on street style. I think it’s interesting to pay attention to the looks the guys are able to bring out to the streets. More often than not, you can find this athletic Fashionisto rocking gray sweats, Nikes, and a basketball hoodie of any sort. Comfort often wins the battle. But for today, he sorted through his closet for this winter classic look.

Plaid has been so in and out, but he managed to make it work, although I doubt it did a good job keeping him warm. Underneath, you can see a plain white T-shirt, which I think is awesome as an add-on layer during the winter months, as well as completing the look by contrasting with the buttons on his button up, and making it look sharp. He paired up his Tommy Hilfiger button up with The North Face black vestwhich is a good piece to keep in your closet whether you are looking to dress up or down. Since I am a huge denim fan, I was very pleased to see this Fashionisto rocking jeans, and making them look great! The dark wash goes well with the other darker tones throughout his fit. As for the Timberland bootsI think we have seen a lot of them out on the streets, but what’s great is that everyone can wear them differently and do so to match their style. In this case, they are not the star of the outfit, but a piece that completes the puzzle.

A great thing about this outfit is that it is so multi-purposed. He can go from running around town and doing errands to spending the night with the guys without having to change a thing! Although I personally am the queen of three (at minimum) outfits a day, I don’t think others share my love for the hassle quite as much.

With winter months still in full force, keep doing your best at staying with the style while keeping warm!
