Not Too Bold, Not Too Bland—Tips and Tricks for Your Daily Makeup

Do you ever wish you had a go-to daily makeup style that went with everything? This Fashionista has figured it out. She uses colors that complement her skin tone without bringing distraction from her natural beauty.

For skin care, this Fashionista uses Neutrogena Oil Free Acne Wash face scrub and Victoria’s Secret Cloudberry Hydrating Body Lotion. When it comes to beauty, her daily makeup includes Fit Me foundation 235 by Maybelline as well as a Fit Me contour stick. When it comes to her lashes, this Fashionista sticks to her gut and continues to use “So Lashy” by Covergirl to make her lashes the most prominent aspect of her makeup.

This Fashionista, along with many others, loves to bring out her eyes with a winged tip eyeliner. She chooses Elf black liquid eyeliner when doing her wings. When it comes to doing her eye shadow, this Fashionista has multiple go-to palettes for shadow color, as well as contouring. For her eye shadow, she uses her Morphe palette and her Tartelette In Bloom palette. When she is contouring, she likes to use her Wet n’ Wild contour palette and her Anastasia Beverly Hills Glow kit.

Last but not least, this Fashionista decided to go with a new hair color in order to complement her skin tone as well as the style of the new school year. She chose to go with a very light lavender-white. In order to maintain her white hair color and prevent it from becoming yellow due to her natural blonde hair, she uses Matrix purple shampoo and hair toner recommended by her Paul Mitchell hair dresser.

These Trends Are Taking Over This Summer

Summer has finally arrived and everyone knows want a new season brings: new trends! I always look forward to every new season to see all of the fun, new styles. Two trends that can be found in all the stores right now are off-the-shoulder pieces and denim. The off-the-shoulder top is a must-have this summer in any Fashionista’s wardrobe. Whether it is paired with shorts, boyfriend jeans, or a denim skirt, it pulls any look together. Denim is also everywhere! I can’t go into any store without seeing an outfit including denim, so I must say I am on the denim trend.

Off-the-shoulder tops and denim are a perfect summer essential. They can be worn casually and both pieces are very easy to be dressed up. If you want to feel chic in an outfit, those two pieces are the way to go. I always feel that some tops aren’t for everyone, but this type of top is flattering on and works for anyone because it is so universal.

If you don’t have a denim skirt or anything denim, make that a goal this summer. In my opinion, denim will never go out of style; these two trends have been around for a while. In the ’90s, Saved by the Bell was a popular TV show; Kelly Kapowski was so stylish and anything she wore she looked amazing. In so many episodes she has denim paired with a cropped off-the-shoulder top. This Fashionista found her inner Kelly Kapowski with her outfit.

This trendy Fashionista paired her go-to denim skirt with her pink and white striped off-the-shoulder top. Her outfit is so simple yet so chic. To pull together the whole outfit, she slipped on her black and tan leather espadrilles. This Fashionista is practicing color blocking by pairing the pink and white top with the black and tan shoe. Espadrilles are another must-have for summer 2017; there are so many cute styles out there. Trust me, once you find an espadrille that works for you, there will be no regrets with that purchase. To finish off the look, she wore her staple tie-up choker that goes with any outfit.

With a pair of these silk or cotton tassel accessories, you can take any outfit up a notch or two. Brands such as Forever 21, MISA Los Angeles, Shopbop, Urban Outfitters, and BaubleBar are just a few to name that have hopped on board the tassel earring train.

How a Fashionista (Appropriately) Brings Summer to the Workplace

For those Fashionistas that must wait until after their summer Internship to fully reap the benefits of the summertime, it is of the utmost importance to incorporate your favorite summer pieces into your work wear. This month’s Fashionista is a prime example of how to rock those chic, bohemian clothing items in an appropriate manner.

1—Wear a colorful off-the-shoulder bodysuit underneath a pair of dark wash jeans. Though denim cut-offs are a summer staple, they are definitely not appropriate for the workplace. Instead, throw on a pair of your favorite skinny jeans, preferably without any holes. The trendy off-the-shoulder bodysuit will fit seamlessly underneath while also adding a little spice to your look. If it is really a scorcher outside, or you just want to show off your cute footwear, give your jeans a small cuff at the bottom.

2—Bring out your favorite gold pieces to enhance that sun-kissed glow. You probably spend your few off days by the pool with friends, right? Why not show off that gorgeous tan! This Fashionista chose large gold accessories to bring out her golden skin. She is wearing ‘Sophee’ Kendra Scott earrings, a gold necklace, and an oversize gold watch surrounded by gold bracelets and rings.

3—Slip into a comfortable pair of beaded sandals. Now to the footwear. No matter what your summer job is, a nice pair of sandals is typically acceptable. To tie into the rest of the look, find a pair of comfy sandals that have neutral beaded detailing. Especially with the cuffed jeans, these sandals will really make a statement for themselves. Oh, I forget to mention you get bonus points if you have an awesome tattoo on your foot.

4—Complete the look with a beautiful smile. I know it is cheesy, but a smile really does pull the look together. Plus, everyone has a reason to smile during the summer.

I’ve seen these skirts paired with many different pieces as everyone makes this trend look their own. I chose to pair my miniskirt with a lightweight, off-the-shoulder top, some retro looking sunglasses, and chunky heels. This outfit gives off a total throwback vibe and I was loving it! This outfit can be worn for many different occasions. I wore mine to a spontaneous concert in the city with some friends and got plenty of compliments on it.

Why I Look to Marilyn Monroe for Style Inspiration

With the arrival of every season comes the subsequent arrival of a new must-have or it item. And every season, I somehow convince myself that it is necessary for me to try out each and every one I see. This summer, I discovered how exhausting that can be. So, here’s what happened when I looked for fashion inspiration from past style icons instead of social media.

At the beginning of the summer, I fell in love with the full-sleeved, off-the-shoulder tops donned by celebrities and fashion bloggers alike. You know the ones: sleeves with tiers or ruffles or bows that would impress Queen Victoria herself.  Excited to be a part of this new trend, I eagerly filled my shopping cart with my own assortment of over the top silhouettes. But as I tried on each garment that came in the mail, I became increasingly disappointed. The tops were wearing me—not the other way around. In retrospect, I loved the idea of these tops turning me into a 21st-century Victorian princess, but they just weren’t my style.

That realization left me slightly panicky. “What will I wear? I said to myself as I peered apprehensively into my closet. “I’m a fashion major. I’m kind of required to be on-trend.”

As I pondered the what-should-I-wear-today dilemma, I found myself drawn to images of classic style icons such as Audrey Hepburn and Marilyn Monroe. I admired the simplicity, elegance, and timelessness of their outfits. I admired their ability to look put-together and polished, even in the heat of summer. But mostly, I admired how these women dared to wear what they wanted in an era of poodle skirts and strict expectations for women.

Out of all the pictures I went through, the one of Marilyn Monroe by the water, legs crossed, laughing at the camera, immediately grabbed my attention. Her outfit—an off-the-shoulder-top and high-waisted shorts—was simple, yet modern. And there was just something about her expression that lit up the whole photo. I knew I wanted to do my own interpretation of that moment.

Filled with inspiration, I paired my red high-waisted shorts (a treasured thrift store find) with a simple black off-the-shoulder top. For interest, I added a red, patterned handkerchief scarf and light green lace-up sandals to keep the outfit modern. I was pleasantly surprised with the outcome: a simple, chic outfit that felt very me, not like a costume.

I will always love trying new things and pushing myself to wear the unexpected. But I’m learning that it’s okay to not buy into every trend that comes down the runway or pops up on a fashion blog. Inspiration comes from anywhere and everywhere. And it is far greater to wear something you love and is 100 percent you than to sacrifice your point of view for a temporary trend.

The Must-Have Summer Item That Will Have You Baring It All

Okay, maybe not baring it all, but just enough. Are you like me and need a super easy spring and summer style to help you pull off your cute jeans, skirts, or favorite heels?

The ultra trendy off-the-shoulder silhouette is flying off the racks at all of your favorite retailers everywhere. If you are like and enjoy people watching, one of the many popular looks I am sure you have seen is the super cute and flirty off-the-shoulder silhouettes.

It is the hottest look that has been incorporated into everything from blouses, dresses, rompers, bridal, and even swimwear. The variations of this sexy and sophisticated look are virtually endless.

Many Fashionistas turn to this option as a basic or staple for their everyday campus look or for a fun night out in the city. The best feature about this trend is that the majority of women find the silhouette very flattering. Like so many, Fashionistas have problem areas, too! With this trendy design, you can keep the focus of the eyes toward your face and shoulders and away from lower body problem areas especially if that is something you struggle with.

As seen on the runway, the off-the-shoulder trend can range from high fashion to street style simply by the way the look is styled.

In these looks, you see the effortless Fashionista on campus rocking her American Eagle Outfitters bright blue off-the-shoulder blouse, vintage distressed flare denim with a tan floppy hat, a beaded necklace, and chunky bracelets. This particular style she has is one of the many variations to this trend. Notice the off-the-shoulder illusion yet there is still material located in the neckline of the blouse. This is an awesome option for those that love the look but don’t quite want to commit to the full off-the-shoulder trend.

Make sure to head into your local American Eagle Outfitters or H&M so you, too, can bare your shoulders during the hot summer months. You will be no less than a super trendsetter.

How to Style Cropped Pants

The cropped pants trend has been around for a while now, but I have always shied away from it. It was due to the fact that whenever I came across one that I liked, there was always something wrong with. It was too short for my long legs or looked awkward on me.

I found this pair of black cropped pants online in the spring, and they’ve been just sitting in my closet. It’s finally time to style them. It’s definitely easy to get too hot if you aren’t careful, but they are so fun and different, even though I like experimenting with style, items such as these cropped pants can be a little intimidating sometimes!

The way I’m tackling this cropped pants trend is by keeping the pieces simple and monochromatic, I styled these pants with a tan colored blouse and gold slides. This is a look I wore to one of the events at The CF Clubhouse. I was at school before attending the events and this look was very comfortable and breezy.

These pants are definitely a staple piece in my closet. I like that they are very versatile and easy to style. l styled them with this off-the-shoulder top to tone it down a little bit and give it a good balance. This blush colored top adds a little bit of color and personality to the look. I wore this look to brunch in Nolita and did some shopping after. I paired it with these black mules and was very happy walking around all day with them because they did not hurt my feet whatsoever, which mules tend to do to me.

I added this crossbody bag, and it’s not as small as it looks! It carried all my necessities. I had a lot of fun finding different ways to style these cropped pants, and can’t wait to find more stylish ways to wear it.

The Back to School Look You Need

It is officially back to school season, and one of the best parts about this time of year is back to school shopping. Not only does it give you an excuse to shamelessly buy all of the clothes you’ve been wanting for months, it is also the time where stores have some of their top deals. However, it can be a bit overwhelming to decide which pieces to invest in and which ones to pass on. That is why this Fashionista has created the perfect back to school look for you to take inspiration from.

Off-the-shoulder tops have been trending for a while, and they have proven that they are here to stay. These tops are such an easy way to instantly look trendy and put together and can be found in most stores. This Fashionista chose to wear a form-fitting smocked off-the-shoulder top, however, there are many other styles of off-the-shoulder tops available. They come in solid colors and prints, tight and loose styles, and an abundance of fabrics, so just find whatever one works for you!

Denim skirts and color-block denim are two more trends that everyone should try this school year. These trends are a simple way to add texture and interest to an outfit, while still looking casual. This Fashionista incorporated both of those trends into her look by wearing a color-block, two-tone denim skirt. If skirts aren’t your thing, you could opt for a pair of color-block mom jeans, which also pair nicely with an off-the-shoulder top.

Lastly, it’s time to add a couple of accessories to complete the look. This Fashionista kept it casual with a simple black choker and a pair of sneakers. The sneakers and simplicity of the accessories make it perfect for walking around campus and going to class.

Casual to Glam by Barely Changing Your Clothes

If you have a busy schedule like I do, then you know that there is not always time to completely change your outfit from a daytime to a nighttime look. This should not stop you from accomplishing this change in your look by just adding or removing accessories and makeup. Below I will explain how I transitioned a daytime outfit into a glam outfit for a night out.

For the general outfit, I am wearing this adorable blue plaid off-the-shoulder sundress. Dresses are one of my favorite pieces of clothing to wear no matter the occasion. This dress is perfect because it is great dressed up or down. For the casual daytime version of the look, I decided to accessorize with brown sandals, thin bracelets, and a long pendant necklace. I like to use accessories to bring life to my style while keeping it simple. I then paired the outfit with natural makeup. This is an outfit I would wear going out to lunch with friends or walking around the art museum.

The second way that I styled this look was for a night out, such as going to a party with friends. Wearing the same dress, I decided to throw on a pair of taupe studded heels and a white fur vest which both add to the glam factor. The jewelry I have on is a beaded silver and gold necklace and chunky silver and gold bracelets to match. Lastly, I added some pop to my already-done makeup in a few different ways. To my eyes, I added a brown winged liner to the brown smokey eye that I was going for. I then applied a more blinding highlight to my cheekbones and inner corners of eyes and switched my nude lip to a shiny brown metallic liquid lipstick. I love using makeup to influence the feel of an outfit.
